The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. This documentary is MBC's HDTV special on the last remaining wildlife spectacles on earth, the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife animals.
The Serengeti, East Africa's eternal paradise, with its endless expanses and wild animals, makes one feel as though evokes a sense of having arrived in an apparently peaceful corner of the world.
Nature filmmaker Reinhard Radke spent more than two years in the land of the Massai and captured breathtaking images. The documentary accompanies the animal filmmaker at work on his new cinema film "Serengeti" in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and illustrates the conditions and the difficulties that can arise when making animal films of this scope and the possibilities provided by state-of-the-art film technology.
Particularly the unique, super slow motion footage
enables zoologists to partake in new fields of research. On the other hand, modern technology is also susceptible to faults and can therefore also hinder the work of an animal filmmaker.

In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti.
The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles.
The Serengeti did not disappoint us.
After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green.
These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their yearly migration.
During our 6 nights stay in this area we experienced only a small part of this great event that never stops, also known as 'the greatest show on earth'.
Out of about 1.5 million Gnus we saw some tens of thousands migrating animals.
And the Serengeti had much more to offer. Impressive thunderstorms. Endless plains with scattered trees and granite rocks (kopjes) where lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are seen regularly. Sometimes hunting, chasing and killing prey on close distance. But most in rest during daytime.
Travelling back to our final destination Zanzibar a stop was made in the 2-3 million years old, 600 meters deep and 260 km2 covering Ngorongoro Crater where many non-migrating animals can be seen in an unique ecological system.
In Zanzibar the Jozani National Park is the place where red Colobus monkeys can be spotted. This animal is highly endangerd. Only about 2500 of these monkeys remain in the wild.
Around Zanzibar there are nice places for snorkeling, diving and swimming with dolphins.

The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa. It is located in north Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi).
The Serengeti hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world, which is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world.
The region contains one national park: Serengeti National Park and several game reserves. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains".
Approximately 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands.Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region.
Currently there is controversy surrounding a proposed road that is to be built through the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Much of the Serengeti was known to outsiders as Maasailand. The Maasai were known as fierce warriors, and lived alongside most wild animals with an aversion to eating game and birds, subsisting exclusively on their cattle. Their strength and reputation kept the newly arrived Europeans from exploiting the animals and resources of most of their land. A rinderpest epidemic and drought during the 1890s greatly reduced the numbers of both Maasai and animal populations. Poaching and the absence of fires, which had been the result of human activity, set the stage for the development of dense woodlands and thickets over the next 30–50 years. Tsetse fly populations now prevented any significant human settlement in the area.

In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti. The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles. The Serengeti did not disappoint us. After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green. These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti.
The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles.
The Serengeti did not disappoint us.
After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green.
These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their yearly migration.
During our 6 nights stay in this area we experienced only a small part of this great event that never stops, also known as 'the greatest show on earth'.
Out of about 1.5 million Gnus we saw some tens of thousands migrating animals.
And the Serengeti had much more to offer. Impressive thunderstorms. Endless plains with scattered trees and granite rocks (kopjes) where lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are seen regularly. Sometimes hunting, chasing and killing prey on close distance. But most in rest during daytime.
Travelling back to our final destination Zanzibar a stop was made in the 2-3 million years old, 600 meters deep and 260 km2 covering Ngorongoro Crater where many non-migrating animals can be seen in an unique ecological system.
In Zanzibar the Jozani National Park is the place where red Colobus monkeys can be spotted. This animal is highly endangerd. Only about 2500 of these monkeys remain in the wild.
Around Zanzibar there are nice places for snorkeling, diving and swimming with dolphins.

In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti.
The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles.
The Serengeti did not disappoint us.
After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green.
These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their yearly migration.
During our 6 nights stay in this area we experienced only a small part of this great event that never stops, also known as 'the greatest show on earth'.
Out of about 1.5 million Gnus we saw some tens of thousands migrating animals.
And the Serengeti had much more to offer. Impressive thunderstorms. Endless plains with scattered trees and granite rocks (kopjes) where lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are seen regularly. Sometimes hunting, chasing and killing prey on close distance. But most in rest during daytime.

The filmmakers follow the artiodactyls, armed with their cameras and lay in wait on the so-called "birthing meadow". There, in the world's largest maternity room, 250.000 calves will be born within the next three weeks. The journey from there to the pasture regions of Kenya is especially dangerous for young animals - and here the film also illustrates nature's harshness. And then there is the "revenge of the gnus", something that Vita and Rolf Köster have become acquainted with. The two filmmakers gained unusual access to the world's most famous game reserve whilst shooting their film in search of the even-toed animals.

The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. I’ve been a FIFO (fly in fly out) worker in Western Australia for almost three years on and off. The phrase FIFO is a relatively new one to us Irish ... One colleague describes us FIFO workers as “a herd of buffalos running in unison in the Serengeti, there are apex predators breathing down our backs, chasing us down in hunting formation primed for the kill, show weakness or a lack of work ethic even for an instant and you are gone” ... ....
