Autonomism
What is the antagonism at the heart of this new form of contemporary capitalism? The capitalist is looking for ever new creative subjectivities, but this subjectivity must be controlled and limited. The contradictions of capital take place within the soul of the worker. To become a subject, paradoxically, means to be subjected. The question, then, is what is the resistance to the contemporary regime of truth, which is the neo-liberal subject? I would like to answer this question by turning to the political theories of the Italian autonomists

Notes from Below: British Marxist Autonomism with Kenny Novis
Notes from Below are a British political group and journal who draw lessons from the Italian labour struggles from the 1960-70s to understand the limits of the modes of organising traditionally deployed by the militant left. Following the Italian operaistas, Notes begin their politics, not in the party or in a study replete with books on history and theory, but in the workplace.
In September 2021, Notes began the Class Composition Project, whose purpose was to understand our current conjuncture better by starting with the experiences of workers in Britain who suffer its consequences and drive its developments. Based on this project, Notes have released a book, Class Composition in Britain. In this episode, Kenny and the Notes from Below collective discuss the key findings of this book, e...

Autonomy
Ethical Principle: Autonomy
Autonomy is a fundamental ethical principle that plays a central role in various fields, including healthcare, law, and moral philosophy. It refers to the principle of respecting an individual's right to make their own decisions, free from coercion, interference, or undue influence from others. Autonomy is often considered a core component of individual rights and human dignity. Here are some key aspects and implications of the ethical principle of autonomy:
1. Informed Consent: In healthcare and medical ethics, autonomy is closely associated with the concept of informed consent. This means that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own medical treatment after being provided with all relevant information about the risks, benefits, and altern...

Art and Ethics 2 - Autonomism
Does the moral value on an artwork influence its aesthetic value? If an artwork is sexist, racist, pro-Nazi, etc, does this count against its value as an artwork? Or when judging art, should we put our moral reactions to one side?
In this video, I examine five arguments for autonomism, the view that moral value and aesthetic value are totally independent.

This means that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own medical treatment after being provided with all relevant information about the risks, benefits, and alternatives. Healthcare professionals must respect a patient's autonomous decision, even if they disagree with it, as long as the patient is competent and their choice is voluntary.
2. Rational Decision-Making: Autonomy presupposes that individuals have the capacity to make rational and informed choices. This capacity may be compromised in certain situations, such as when a person lacks the mental capacity due to illness or cognitive impairment. In such cases, the principle of autonomy may need to be balanced with the principle of beneficence, which prioritizes the well-being and best interests of the individual.
3. Respect for Diverse Values: Autonomy also entails respecting the diverse values, beliefs, and preferences of individuals. It acknowledges that people have different moral, cultural, and religious perspectives that should be taken into account when making decisions that may affect them.
4. Limits to Autonomy: While autonomy is a fundamental principle, it is not absolute. There are limits to autonomy, particularly when an individual's choices pose a significant risk to themselves or others. In such cases, ethical dilemmas may arise, and the principle of autonomy may need to be weighed against other ethical principles, such as beneficence (doing what is in the person's best interests) and justice (fair distribution of resources and benefits).
5. Legal and Ethical Frameworks: Autonomy is often enshrined in legal and ethical frameworks, such as the principle of patient autonomy in medical ethics or the right to self-determination in legal contexts. These frameworks provide guidelines for respecting and upholding individual autonomy while also recognizing situations where it may need to be limited.
6. Cultural and Contextual Considerations: The interpretation and application of the principle of autonomy can vary across cultures and contexts. What constitutes a respectful approach to autonomy in one culture may differ from another. Ethical decision-makers should be sensitive to these cultural variations while upholding the core principle of respecting individual autonomy.
In summary, autonomy is a fundamental ethical principle that emphasizes an individual's right to make their own decisions based on informed and rational choices. It plays a crucial role in areas like healthcare and law, where respecting individual rights and dignity is of paramount importance. However, it is not an absolute principle and may be subject to limitations in certain circumstances, balancing individual autonomy with other ethical considerations.

What is Postcolonialism:
Since I claim to be a postcolonialism scholar, I think it is apt to include a brief description of my field of study. In my view, Postcolonialism ( also written as Post Colonialism or Post-Colonialism) is a dynamic field of literary study that focuses on the history of colonialism and native responses to the colonial policies and life after colonialism formally ends. The field of postcolonialism also offers insights into the literature and culture of the the former European colonies and their struggles after the end of colonialism.
