Broken spokes don't happen very often, but, when they do it's easy to think of replacing them as an expensive job, a time-consuming job, or both. If you're feeling up to it, and your wheel isn't too specialist or too deep, you may well be able to do this job at home.

A broken spoke can often mean the end of your bike ride and even your wheel. But, if you have a multi-tool with a spoke key with you, you can straighten your wheel out and ride home.
All you'll need is a multi-tool and some tape or zip ties.
If you're on a long-distance ride, it's worth carrying a few spokes as spares. We've got you covered: Daniel shows you how to replace a spoke too.

This is how to replace a broken spoke on a bike wheel. This wheel came off a 1984 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe. I bought the bike used from a thrift store and the spoke was already broken. I true the wheel pretty well. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good considering the wheel is about 30 years old and who knows what was done to it. In the video I use a Park Tools Truing stand. But you can do a pretty good job with the wheel mounted on your bike and spinning it and using the brake pads as a reference point to how you need to adjust it.

This is a quick tutorial on changing a broken spoke on a bicycle.
This is my first repair-style video. I intend to make a series of repair videos as repairs on my bikes are needed. I hope this video is helpful, I love doing bike repairs!

The bike in this video I call 'The 35'. I've used it almost every day for 2 years, including 2 Canadian winters. The amount of rust on the bike was caused from road salt, not abuse. I've kept the bike very well maintained, and it still rides as good as a brand new bike.

A broken spoke can often mean the end of your bike ride and even your wheel. But, if you have a multi-tool with a spoke key with you, you can straighten your wheel out and ride home.

This is how to replace a broken spoke on a bike wheel. This wheel came off a 1984 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe. I bought the bike used from a thrift store and the spoke was already broken. I true the wheel pretty well. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good considering the wheel is about 30 years old and who knows what was done to it. In the video I use a Park Tools Truing stand. But you can do a pretty good job with the wheel mounted on your bike and spinning it and using the brake pads as a reference point to how you need to adjust it.

This is my first repair-style video. I intend to make a series of repair videos as repairs on my bikes are needed. I hope this video is helpful, I love doing bike repairs!
