It all started with an offhand comment from a student who said, "I don't want to leave Rice without having done a Shakespeare play outside on this beautiful campus."
At first, Christina Keefe, professor in the practice in theater and director of the Rice Theatre Program, thought nothing of it; she agreed that it would be a lovely idea.
Then as she walked around the campus one fall day, Keefe walked through the courtyard outside Rice Gallery and thought that the archway would really be a perfect place to set something sort of Grecian.
A year later, the Rice Theatre Program is producing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" outside on campus, utilizing those columns and the stunning oak tree in Founder's Court. And as for the student who made the comment? She is playing Titania, queen of the fairies, in her senior year.

Midsummer day simply refer to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, but more often refers to specific European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice, or that take place on a day between June 21 and June 24, and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. Midsummer is especially important in the cultures of Scandinavia and Latvia where it is the most celebrated holiday apart from Christmas.
European midsummer-related holidays, traditions, and celebrations are pre-Christian in origin. They are particularly important in Northern Europe - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania – but are also found in Germany, Ireland, parts of Britain (Cornwall especially), France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, other parts of Europe, and elsewhere - such as Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, and also in the Southern Hemisphere (mostly in Brazil, Argentina and Australia), where this imported European celebration would be more appropriately called Midwinter.

Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966) is an American recording artist and actress. Known for a series of sonically innovative, socially conscious and sexually provocative records, as well as elaborate stage shows, television and film roles, she has been a prominent figure in popular culture for over 25 years. The youngest child of the Jackson family, she began her career with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976 and went on to appear in other television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times and Fame.
After signing a recording contract with A&M in 1982, she came to prominence following the release of her third studio album Control (1986). Her collaborations with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial beats, which led to crossover appeal in popular music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her records, choreography, music videos, and prominence on radio airplay and MTV, she was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.

It all started with an offhand comment from a student who said, "I don't want to leave Rice without having done a Shakespeare play outside on this beautiful campus." At first, Christina Keefe, professor in the practice in theater and director of the Rice Theatre Program, thought nothing of it; she agreed that it would be a lovely idea. Then as she walked around the campus one fall day, Keefe walked through the courtyard outside Rice Gallery and thought that the archway would really be a perfect place to set something sort of Grecian. A year later, the Rice Theatre Program is producing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" outside on campus, utilizing those columns and the stunning oak tree in Founder's Court. It all started with an offhand comment from a student who said, "I don't want to leave Rice without having done a Shakespeare play outside on this beautiful campus."
At first, Christina Keefe, professor in the practice in theater and director of the Rice Theatre Program, thought nothing of it; she agreed that it would be a lovely idea.
Then as she walked around the campus one fall day, Keefe walked through the courtyard outside Rice Gallery and thought that the archway would really be a perfect place to set something sort of Grecian.
A year later, the Rice Theatre Program is producing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" outside on campus, utilizing those columns and the stunning oak tree in Founder's Court. And as for the student who made the comment? She is playing Titania, queen of the fairies, in her senior year.
