Koli National Park
Koli National Park (Finnish: Kolin kansallispuisto) is a national park in the municipalities of Joensuu, Lieksa and Kontiolahti in the North Karelia region of Finland. It covers 30 square kilometres (12 sq mi) of forested hills on the western shore of Lake Pielinen, and was established in 1991. Contrary to the other national parks in Finland, Koli National Park was originally governed by the Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla. It is now governed by the Metsähallitus like the other national parks.
Koli has lots to offer cultural heritage-wise. Formerly, it was a sacrificial site, but was later used for slash-and-burn agriculture. The purpose of Koli National Park isn't to preserve wild nature, but the traditional agricultural heritage is cherished in Koli. Some fields are slashed, burnt and re-cultivated; hay is cut yearly. Traditional Finnish breeds of cow and sheep graze in the meadows of Koli.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

List of national parks of the United States
The United States has 59 protected areas known as national parks that are operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. National parks must be established by an act of the United States Congress. The first national park, Yellowstone, was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872, followed by Mackinac National Park in 1875 (decommissioned in 1895), and then Rock Creek Park (later merged into National Capital Parks), Sequoia and Yosemite in 1890. The Organic Act of 1916 created the National Park Service "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." Many current National Parks had been previously protected as National Monuments by the President under the Antiquities Act before being upgraded by Congress. Seven national parks (six in Alaska) are paired with a National Preserve. While administered together, they are considered as separate units and their areas are not included in the figures below. The newest national park is Pinnacles National Park, upgraded in 2013.

Koliq
Koliq (in Albanian) or Kolić (in Serbian; Колић) is a village 15 mi (24 km) northwest of Pristina, Kosovo. It is in the Goljak region, which with other villages make up the District of Pristina. It has a population of approximately 50–60 people. As of today, more than 95% of the population have migrated to Pristina for a better economic life. The village is mainly in the mountains, though some parts are on flatlands.

Koli National Park (Kolin Kansallispuisto) is a remote and rocky forest on the western shoreline of Lake Pielinen about 50 km north of Joensuu. The island and lake view has been immortalised by generations of painters and photographers turning this magnificent scene into a much loved national landscape.
My adventure in Koli National Park started on a historic farm called Kolin Keidas. I ended up sleeping in one of the wooden outbuildings of Mattila’s Farm - the site's original name. It was a unique experience and saved me some money along the way.
By mid morning I was back on the road heading for the car park of Koli National Park. From there I rode the Koli railcar (Kolin Kiskohissi) up to the nature centre and starting point for a plethora of hiking trails and walking routes. Excited and ready for some exercise I set off on the red route which would pass the highest point in the national park.
In the 19th century talented painters such as Eero Järnefelt would roam the hills of Koli looking for inspiration and enchantment. The hills, lakes, forest and islands would rarely let them down and from this very spot some of Finland’s most striking paintings would be painted.
As I explored the wonderful hills of Paha, Ukko & Akka I found the scene painted a century before my visit, and one that literally took my breath away. As I stood on a large white quartzite peak I was genuinely blown away by the stunning landscape right in front of my eyes. Nothing, not even the most detailed and vibrant of paintings can prepare you for seeing the real thing.
I enjoyed my day in Koli National Park so much that after summiting Ukko-Koli I returned to my car and set off for a lakeside road I had spotted whilst flying my drone. I wasn’t disappointed as the road led me to a couple of scenic beaches and a pretty wooded area on the hillside.
My day just kept getting better and I was lucky enough to end it at the top of the lofty Rasavaara Observation Tower (Räsävaaran Näkötorni) overlooking a seemingly endless landscape of forests, lakes, islands & the setting sun.

I was in Koli National Park in North Karelia, Finland because of the jury-meeting of the Scandinavian Outdoor Award. We always travel somewhere beautiful for product testing in the great outdoors. Most of the time I don't find the time to shoot a video because the time schedule and what we need to do is very tight. This time was not different except for one morning. I got up at 04:30 and went for a hike. I had a couple of hours but I am pretty pleased with what I did with just my iPhone, gimbal and drone. After this hike we did many more activities - biking, trail running, canoeing, rafting (in a wooden boat) - and I have some beautiful shots but it's not a story. I hope I will be back one day to do a decent video with another camera on all that North Karelia has to offer. It is really an amazing magical place.

But maybe it was just a perfect time to visit since we could walk in the nature listening mostly only the sounds of the nature even around the most famous peaks of Koli!

Koli National Park (Kolin Kansallispuisto) is a remote and rocky forest on the western shoreline of Lake Pielinen about 50 km north of Joensuu. The island and lake view has been immortalised by generations of painters and photographers turning this magnificent scene into a much loved national landscape.
My adventure in Koli National Park started on a historic farm called Kolin Keidas. I ended up sleeping in one of the wooden outbuildings of Mattila’s Farm - the site's original name. It was a unique experience and saved me some money along the way.
By mid morning I was back on the road heading for the car park of Koli National Park. From there I rode the Koli railcar (Kolin Kiskohissi) up to the nature centre and starting point for a plethora of hiking trails and walking routes. Excited and ready for some exercise I set off on the red route which would pass the highest point in the national park.
In the 19th century talented painters such as Eero Järnefelt would roam the hills of Koli looking for inspiration and enchantment. The hills, lakes, forest and islands would rarely let them down and from this very spot some of Finland’s most striking paintings would be painted.
As I explored the wonderful hills of Paha, Ukko & Akka I found the scene painted a century before my visit, and one that literally took my breath away. As I stood on a large white quartzite peak I was genuinely blown away by the stunning landscape right in front of my eyes. Nothing, not even the most detailed and vibrant of paintings can prepare you for seeing the real thing.
I enjoyed my day in Koli National Park so much that after summiting Ukko-Koli I returned to my car and set off for a lakeside road I had spotted whilst flying my drone. I wasn’t disappointed as the road led me to a couple of scenic beaches and a pretty wooded area on the hillside.
My day just kept getting better and I was lucky enough to end it at the top of the lofty Rasavaara Observation Tower (Räsävaaran Näkötorni) overlooking a seemingly endless landscape of forests, lakes, islands & the setting sun.

I was in Koli National Park in North Karelia, Finland because of the jury-meeting of the Scandinavian Outdoor Award. We always travel somewhere beautiful for product testing in the great outdoors. Most of the time I don't find the time to shoot a video because the time schedule and what we need to do is very tight. This time was not different except for one morning. I got up at 04:30 and went for a hike. I had a couple of hours but I am pretty pleased with what I did with just my iPhone, gimbal and drone. After this hike we did many more activities - biking, trail running, canoeing, rafting (in a wooden boat) - and I have some beautiful shots but it's not a story. I hope I will be back one day to do a decent video with another camera on all that North Karelia has to offer. It is really an amazing magical place.

In only two nights we had a really amazing trip in the Koli National Park. We didn't really expect there to be this much snow at the end of April. But maybe it was just a perfect time to visit since we could walk in the nature listening mostly only the sounds of the nature even around the most famous peaks of Koli!

Free tips:
- If you need more easy and relaxing trip we recommmend: Hotel Koli (Break Sokos Hotel Koli). It has very center location with beautiful view!
- For more Authentic Koli, National Park Experience. Sleep in a tent or rent a summer cottage from the locals. Discover different hiking routes and maybe row in a lake with traditional boat (remember to wear life jacket). Eat finnish sausages made in fire.
- One day is maybe too little time to discover Koli. (Transportation of course always take some time.)
HOW TO GET THERE?
- Public transportation: From Helsinki Central Railway Station you will get there with train and bus.
First take train or bus to the Joensuu. From Joensuu you take bus (bus taxi) to the Koli (check more info from their official website: www.koli.fi)
- Own car: From Helsinki to Koli with own or rented car it takes about 6 hour to get there! First drive to the Joensuu and then drive to the Koli. (If you have been thinking about visiting Savonlinna or Kuopio you can make it pretty easily with the same trip.)
- Koli locates about 490 km from Helsinki.

Koli National Park
Koli National Park (Finnish: Kolin kansallispuisto) is a national park in the municipalities of Joensuu, Lieksa and Kontiolahti in the North Karelia region of Finland. It covers 30 square kilometres (12 sq mi) of forested hills on the western shore of Lake Pielinen, and was established in 1991. Contrary to the other national parks in Finland, Koli National Park was originally governed by the Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla. It is now governed by the Metsähallitus like the other national parks.
Koli has lots to offer cultural heritage-wise. Formerly, it was a sacrificial site, but was later used for slash-and-burn agriculture. The purpose of Koli National Park isn't to preserve wild nature, but the traditional agricultural heritage is cherished in Koli. Some fields are slashed, burnt and re-cultivated; hay is cut yearly. Traditional Finnish breeds of cow and sheep graze in the meadows of Koli.
