During the summer of 2008 Ed and John embarked on a Baltic vacation and one among many wonders which they enjoyed together was this sculpture / memorial honoring Finish composer Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957).

The monument (Passio Musicae) is situated in "Sibelius Park" (Sibeliuspuisto) in the Toolo district of Helsinki just to the north west of the centre, across the road from a large lake. Many bus tours stop at the park each day for "the photo opportunity." As you enter the park you can catch a tantalising glimpse of the sculptures between the trees. The park is not gated so you can visit at any time and there is no admission charge. Nor is the monument fenced off or mounted on a high plinth, you can simply walk straight up to it. The memorial is, in fact, one of the most popular "tourist attractions" in Helsinki though I am not sure how many of the people who visit it are familiar with the composer's work. However there are several museums in Finland dedicated to Sibelius so I wouldn't be surprised if many visitors come home knowing a lot more about the man than when they arrived. The artist, Eila Hiltunen, created an unintended effect with this work; on a windy day orchestral sounds are produced by air currents crossing the tops of the pipes. Hiltunen is well known in the sculpture world for the pioneering work she did using MIG welding which was a relatively new method in any industry, let alone in the art world. Unfortunately the intense and prolonged work involved in the creation of "Passio Musicae" took its toll on her and she contracted chronic bronchial asthma due to the techniques used and the fact that the work was carried out in a small studio. Another of her works - a copper fountain - can be seen outside the central bank in Helsinki.
Passio Musicae is a deceptive piece of art.
Dimensions:
It is ten and a half metres long, six and a half metres deep and eight and a half metres high. In addition it weighs 30 tons. It took Hiltunen four years to complete the project but she did not work alone; her assistant was Emil Kokkonen and together they handworked the differently textured end sections of each pipe.

Sibelius Monument was created by sculptor
Eila Hiltunen in 1967
The project culminated in a collaboration between
German sculptor Lukas Kühne and the Finnish art
universities. By holding workshops at the University
of the Art’s Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy
and the Aalto University’s Media Lab Helsinki, they
created the final work exhibited in the The National
Art Gallery of Finland, Ateneum Art Museum.

Originally it sparked a lively debate about the merits and flaws of abstract art, for which reason an effigy of Sibelius was included in the work. It consists of series of more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together in a wave-like pattern. The purpose of the artist was to capture the essence of the music of Sibelius. The monument weighs 24 tonnes (24 long tons; 26 short tons) and measures 8.5 × 10.5 × 6.5 metres.
A smaller version of the monument is located at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. A work with a similar concept, also designed by Hiltunen, is located at the grounds of the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Jean Sibelius (
pronunciation (help·info); 8 December 1865 – 20 September 1957) was a Finnish composer of the later Romantic period. His music played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity. His mastery of the orchestra has been described as "prodigious."
The core of Sibelius's oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies. Like Beethoven, Sibelius used each successive work to further develop his own personal compositional style. His works continue to be performed frequently in the concert hall and are often recorded.
In addition to the symphonies, Sibelius's best-known compositions include Finlandia, the Karelia Suite, Valse triste, the Violin Concerto in D minor and The Swan of Tuonela (one of the four movements of the Lemminkäinen Suite). Other works include pieces inspired by the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala; over 100 songs for voice and piano; incidental music for 13 plays; the opera Jungfrun i tornet (The Maiden in the Tower); chamber music; piano music; Masonic ritual music; and 21 separate publications of choral music.

Ekenäs Archipelago National Park A national park situated in the Ekenäs archipelago, in the Uusimaa region. Was established in 1989 and covers 52 square kilometres. Passio Musicae Open Source is an interactive audio installation and sonification of the Sibelius Monument in Helsinki, Finland. Visitors can explore the sounds by moving around in the space. The sounds are generated from the actual physical dimensions of the 569 steel tubes of the original monument. Sibelius Monument was created by sculptor Eila Hiltunen in 1967 The project culminated in a collaboration between German sculptor Lukas Kühne and the Finnish art universities. The park is not gated so you can visit at any time and there is no admission charge. Nor is the monument fenced off or mounted on a high plinth, you can simply walk straight up to it. The memorial is, in fact, one of the most popular "tourist attractions" in Helsinki though I am not sure how many of the people who visit it are familiar with the composer's work. However there are several museums in Finland dedicated to Sibelius so I wouldn't be surprised if many visitors come home knowing a lot more about the man than when they arrived. The artist, Eila Hiltunen, created an unintended effect with this work; on a windy day orchestral sounds are produced by air currents crossing the tops of the pipes. Hiltunen is well known in the sculpture world for the pioneering work she did using MIG welding which was a relatively new method in any industry, let alone in the art world. Unfortunately the intense and prolonged work involved in the creation of "Passio Musicae" took its toll on her and she contracted chronic bronchial asthma due to the techniques used and the fact that the work was carried out in a small studio. Another of her works - a copper fountain - can be seen outside the central bank in Helsinki.
Passio Musicae is a deceptive piece of art.

A smaller version of the monument is located at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. A work with a similar concept, also designed by Hiltunen, is located at the grounds of the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Temppeliaukio Church
A lutheran church in the Töölö neighborhood. Designed by architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and opened in 1969. Also known as the Church of the Rock. There are no bells at the church; a recording composed by Taneli Kuusisto is played on the exterior wall.

An inhabited sea fortress built on six islands. A UNESCO World Heritage site and popular with tourists and locals. Originally named Sveaborg (Fortress of Svea), or Viapori as called by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918.
Seurasaari
An island and a district in Helsinki. Known mostly as the location of the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, which consists of old, mainly wooden buildings transplanted from elsewhere in Finland and placed in the dense forest landscape of the island.

A nude female statue. Was sculpted by Ville Vallgren in 1906 in Paris, but was not erected at its present location at the Market Square in Kaartinkaupunki until 1908. Is a mermaid who stands on seaweed as she rises from the water, with four fish spouting water at her feet.
Puuhamaa
An amusement park opened in 1984 in the village of Tervakoski. Instead of electrical rides, it mainly offers things to do for children: slides and waterslides, bouncy castles, race tracks. The park has an entrance fee, but all its features are free.
Uspenski Cathedral
An Eastern Orthodox cathedral dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev. Was built after his death in 1862–1868. Free admission. In winter, the Cathedral is closed on Mondays.
Natural History Museum of Helsinki
An exhibition of the Finnish Museum of Natural History of the University of Helsinki. Located in Etu-Töölö. Displays taxidermed animals, skeletons, remains of prehistoric animals, and minerals. The moose statue in front of the museum is its best known symbol.
Ekenäs Archipelago National Park
A national park situated in the Ekenäs archipelago, in the Uusimaa region. Was established in 1989 and covers 52 square kilometres. The park can only be accessed by boat. Visitors without a boat can reach it by a water taxi.

Helsinki (Finnish) or Helsingfors (Swedish) is the capital of Finland. Founded in 1550, the "Daughter of the Baltic" has been the Finnish capital since 1812, when it was rebuilt by the tsars of Russia along the lines of a miniature St. Petersburg, a role it has played in many Cold War movies. Today, Helsinki pulls off the trick of being something of an international metropolis while still retaining a small-town feel. Parliament House (Eduskunta), Mannerheimintie 30, [66]. The House of the 200-seat Parliament of Finland was designed by J.S. Sirén in the classic style of the 1920s and officially inaugurated in 1931. The interior is classical with a touch of functionalism and art deco. Tours in English at 11AM and 12PM on Sat, 12PM and 1PM on Sun. During the months of Jul and Aug English tours are at 1PM on weekdays (and not available on weekends). Free. Finlandia Hall, Mannerheimintie 13, [67]. Designed by Finland's best known architect Alvar Aalto and located across the street from the National Museum, the marble Finlandia Hall is a popular congress and concert venue in Helsinki. The building itself is worth a visit particularly for architecture buffs, with guided tours available (€6/4, check website for schedule). Be sure to view the building also from across the Töölönlahti bay in the evening when it is floodlit. M-F 9AM-4PM. Free.

Parliament House (Eduskunta), Mannerheimintie 30, [66]. The House of the 200-seat Parliament of Finland was designed by J.S. Tours in English at 11AM and 12PM on Sat, 12PM and 1PM on Sun. During the months of Jul and Aug English tours are at 1PM on weekdays (and not available on weekends). Free. Finlandia Hall, Mannerheimintie 13, [67]. Designed by Finland's best known architect Alvar Aalto and located across the street from the National Museum, the marble Finlandia Hall is a popular congress and concert venue in Helsinki. The building itself is worth a visit particularly for architecture buffs, with guided tours available (€6/4, check website for schedule). Be sure to view the building also from across the Töölönlahti bay in the evening when it is floodlit. M-F 9AM-4PM. Free.
Sibelius Monument, Sibelius Park, [68]. The world-famous composer Jean Sibelius' monument was designed by sculptress Eila Hiltunen and unveiled in 1967. In general, the architecture of Helsinki is a mixture of 19th Century imperial design and 20th Century Art Nouveau. However, the city's most impressive buildings and landmarks are the work of Finland's famous designer Alvar Aalto.
Among the city's most important buildings are the Lutheran Cathedral in Senate Square, the Uspenski Orthodox cathedral, the University and the Presidential Palace. One of the main Lutheran temples is the renowned Temppeliaukio church, carved in rock and a venue for art exhibitions and concerts. The most important music venue is the Aalto-designed Finlandia-talo. Nearby is a park dedicated to the Finnish composer Sibelius and including a statue of celebrated writer Eila Hiltunen. The street markets of Helsinki are another of its main attractions.

The modern city of Helsinki is a fascinating architectural mix, partly in a style based on St Petersburg and partly a futuristic suburbia. As the capital of Finland, it is also the cultural centre, with more than 30 art galleries and museums. The history of Helsinki, known as the 'daughter of the Baltic', over the past thousand years has not been short of dramatic interludes. At the beginning of the second millennium Finland was strongly influenced by Sweden, despite maintaining official independence.
King Gustavus I of Sweden founded Helsinki in 1550 and the Swedes occupied the city until 1812 when it passed to Russian rule. When Finland gained independence in 1917, this was the beginning of further turmoil. Bloody civil war broke out and at the beginning of World War II the Russians invaded under the leadership of General Mennerheim. After more than one year of being under siege, Helsinki finally gave way to the invading forces. Since the war, Finland has pursued a policy of neutrality.
In general, the architecture of Helsinki is a mixture of 19th Century imperial design and 20th Century Art Nouveau. However, the city's most impressive buildings and landmarks are the work of Finland's famous designer Alvar Aalto.
Among the city's most important buildings are the Lutheran Cathedral in Senate Square, the Uspenski Orthodox cathedral, the University and the Presidential Palace. One of the main Lutheran temples is the renowned Temppeliaukio church, carved in rock and a venue for art exhibitions and concerts. The most important music venue is the Aalto-designed Finlandia-talo. Nearby is a park dedicated to the Finnish composer Sibelius and including a statue of celebrated writer Eila Hiltunen. The street markets of Helsinki are another of its main attractions.
