The very first ”FirstFlyTo Travel” -video on this channel! BOEING 717 flying experience on board Blue1 flight SK717 from Helsinki to Stockholm-Arlanda. Luckily my flightnumber was very fitting for this flight ;) In February I travelled from Helsinki to Zürich via Stockholm and had the chance to fly one of my favorite jet of all – the new generation ”maddog”, the Boeing 717. I have been travelling with Blue1's former MD-90s and current Boeing 717s many times and have always loved those T-tails! Very very sad. The aircraft shown in this video left Blue1's fleet in June and is now flying with Volotea Airlines. Active in Blue1s fleet as of june are: OH-BLN OH-BLP OH-BLO OH-BLJ OH-BLQ - BOEING 717 history: The Boeing 717, originally named MD-95 was designed to be the replacement for DC-9s and the follower of the commercial unsuccessful MD-90. With three MD-95 variants planned, McDonnellDouglas was aiming for the market of 90-150 seated aircrafts wanting to compete with Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737NG series. That's when Boeing stepped in and bought the whole company. Quickly after the purchase, the MD-95 was rebranded into Boeing 717. The variants were named 717-300X, 717-200 and 717-100X. With the 717-200 already in production, Boeing cancelled the plan of building the two other variants, leaving Boeing 717-200 the only aircraft in the family. The first Boeing 717-200 was sold to airTran in 1994 and just after 8 years of production Boeing ceased the whole MD-95/717 line. The last 717 was delivered to Mexicana Airlines in 2006. Boeing stated that they will concentrate on their 737NG series and have no intentions to continue the 717 line nor any production at Long Beach. It is speculated that McDonnellDouglas/Boeing lost a loyal customer as Scandinavian Airlines (long-time user of the DC-9, MD-80s and MD-90) chose the Boeing 737-600 as their 100 seat aircraft instead of the 717. It is rumored that that might have been one factor that led Boeing to the decision of shutting down the MD-95/717 program and concentrate on the more successful 737NG..
