Today let's talk about the practically of the 6.2" 18.5:9 display on the Samsung Galaxy S8+. Since most apps and videos are natively in 16:9 ratio, they take just 5.175" and 5.53" of the 18.5:9 display of Galaxy S8 & S8+ respectively. You can optimize the apps and videos by cropping but is this really practical? I mean the S8+ is huge, not usable with one hand. Compared to other 5.5" displays with 16:9 aspect ratio, S8+ is much taller and less ergonomic. So, do you think Samsung made the right choice here? Let me know in the comment section.

Display aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of a display is the proportional relationship between its width and its height.
It is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (x:y). Current common aspect ratios for displays are 5:4, 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9.
Computer displays
Computer displays with aspect ratios wider than 4:3 are also called widescreen. Widescreen computer displays are typically of the 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. In 2008, the computer industry started to move over from 4:3 and 16:10 to 16:9. Many 16:9 computer displays can be found in resolutions of 1024×576, 1152×648, 1280×720, 1600×900, 1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160, while 1366×768 is an approximate ratio to 16:9 with its true ratio of 683:384.
History
4:3 and 16:10
Until about 2003, most computer monitors had a 4:3 aspect ratio and some had 5:4. Between 2003 and 2006, monitors with 16:10 aspect ratio became commonly available, first in laptops and later also in standalone computer monitors. Reasons for this transition was productive uses for such monitors, i.e. besides widescreen movie viewing and computer game play, are the word processor display of two standard letter pages side by side, as well as CAD displays of large-size drawings and CAD application menus at the same time. 16:10 became the most common sold aspect ratio for widescreen computer monitors until 2008.

Aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of a geometric shape is the ratio of its sizes in different dimensions. For example, the aspect ratio of a rectangle is the ratio of its longer side to its shorter side - the ratio of width to height, when the rectangle is oriented as a "landscape".
The aspect ratio is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (x:y). The values x and y do not represent actual width and height but, rather, the "relation" between width and height. As an example, 8:5, 16:10 and 1.6:1 are the same aspect ratio.
In objects of more than two dimensions, such as Hyperrectangles, the aspect ratio can still be defined as the ratio of the longest side to the shortest side.
Applications and uses
The term is most commonly used with reference to:
- Image aspect ratio
- Display aspect ratio: the aspect ratio for computer displays.
- Paper size
- Standard photographic print sizes
- Motion picture film formats
- Standard ad size
- Pixel aspect ratio
- Photolithography: the aspect ratio of an etched, or deposited structure is the ratio of the height of its vertical side wall to its width.
- HARMST High Aspect Ratios allow the construction of tall structures without slant

Today let's talk about the practically of the 6.2" 18.5:9 display on the Samsung Galaxy S8+. Since most apps and videos are natively in 16:9 ratio, they take just 5.175" and 5.53" of the 18.5:9 display of Galaxy S8 & S8+ respectively. You can optimize the apps and videos by cropping but is this really practical? I mean the S8+ is huge, not usable with one hand. Compared to other 5.5" displays with 16:9 aspect ratio, S8+ is much taller and less ergonomic. So, do you think Samsung made the right choice here? Let me know in the comment section.

Today let's talk about the practically of the 6.2" 18.5:9 display on the Samsung Galaxy S8+. Since most apps and videos are natively in 16:9 ratio, they take just 5.175" and 5.53" of the 18.5:9 display of Galaxy S8 & S8+ respectively. You can optimize the apps and videos by cropping but is this really practical? I mean the S8+ is huge, not usable with one hand. Compared to other 5.5" displays with 16:9 aspect ratio, S8+ is much taller and less ergonomic. So, do you think Samsung made the right choice here? Let me know in the comment section.

I have only explained resolutions for NTSC and PAL formats but the information in the video can easily be transferred to whatever resolution you're working with.
