Catching an alligator gar near 100 pounds on the trinity river near crockett Tx from my 9 foot malibu mini x kayak. i was using cut carp for bait, the rod/reel used was a shimano trevalla jigging rod rated for up to 200# braid with a shimano tyrnos 16 loaded with 100# braid. the fish swam away healthy to fight another day, alligator gar are some of the oldest fish on the planet with fossils records showing them living during the cretaceous period..the Trinity river is a crazy environment i have fallen in love with i will be making another trip soon.

This a collection of videos from the past couple days trying to catch gar on artificials. This is at a local retention pond with creeks running into it. Sometimes they will get in a foot of water in the thickest stuff possible. All of these gar were seen and casted to with two different baits. One is a 2" BPS jerk bait. The other is a zoom fluke on a size 12 treble hook. Gar of very hard to hook especially on lures so I suggest to downsize the presentation and set the hook down towards the water because the bottom of the gars mouth is soft and can be hooked. I landed about 1 out of 3 that ate my lure. This summer I will make a couple more of these videos.

In American English the name gar (or garpike) is strictly applied to members of the Lepisosteidae, a family including seven living species of fish in two genera that inhabit fresh, brackish, and occasionally marine, waters of eastern North America, Central America, and the Caribbean islands.
In British English the name gar was originally used for a species of needlefish, Belone belone, found in the North Atlantic, itself likely named after the Old English word gar meaning "spear".Belone belone is now more commonly referred to as the "garfish" or "gar fish" to avoid confusion with the North American gars of the family Lepisosteidae. Confusingly, the name "garfish" is commonly used for a number of other species of the related genera Strongylura, Tylosurus and Xenentodon of the family Belonidae as well as of some more distantly related genera in the suborder Belonoidei.
The genus name Lepisosteus comes from the Greek lepis meaning "scale" and osteon meaning "bone".Atractosteus is similarly derived from Greek, in this case from atraktos, meaning "arrow".

Catching A DINOSAUR Alligator Gar From Kayak
Catching an alligator gar near 100 pounds on the trinity river near crockett Tx from my 9 foot malibu mini x kayak. i was using cut carp for bait, the rod/reel used was a shimano trevalla jigging rod rated for up to 200# braid with a shimano tyrnos 16 loaded with 100# braid. the fish swam away healthy to fight another day, alligator gar are some of the oldest fish on the planet with fossils records showing them living during the cretaceous period..the Trinity river is a crazy environment i have fallen in love with i will be making another trip soon. -

Gar Fishing with Artificial Lures
This a collection of videos from the past couple days trying to catch gar on artificials. This is at a local retention pond with creeks running into it. Sometimes they will get in a foot of water in the thickest stuff possible. All of these gar were seen and casted to with two different baits. One is a 2" BPS jerk bait. The other is a zoom fluke on a size 12 treble hook. Gar of very hard to hook especially on lures so I suggest to downsize the presentation and set the hook down towards the water because the bottom of the gars mouth is soft and can be hooked. I landed about 1 out of 3 that ate my lure. This summer I will make a couple more of these videos. -
