In computer science, an online algorithm is one that can process its input piece-by-piece in a serial fashion, i.e., in the order that the input is fed to the algorithm, without having the entire input available from the start. In contrast, an offline algorithm is given the whole problem data from the beginning and is required to output an answer which solves the problem at hand. (For example, selection sort requires that the entire list be given before it can sort it, while insertion sort doesn't.)

Because it does not know the whole input, an online algorithm is forced to make decisions that may later turn out not to be optimal, and the study of online algorithms has focused on the quality of decision-making that is possible in this setting. Competitive analysis formalizes this idea by comparing the relative performance of an online and offline algorithm for the same problem instance. Christian Rudder is an American writer musician and entrepreneur.

Rudder was the creative voice of TheSpark.com, which was the viral content arm of SparkNotes during the site's early rise to popularity. Working with Chris Coyne, Rudder wrote humorous tests and articles to drive young people to SparkNotes' study guides. During Rudder's tenure at TheSpark it was one of the most popular humor sites on the web. Rudder joined TheSpark and SparkNotes in October 1999. He became TheSpark's Creative Director in March 2001.

Soon after the sites' sale to Barnes & Noble, Rudder and the SparkNotes founders - Chris Coyne, Sam Yagan, and Max Krohn - left and began work on OkCupid, a dating website that has its roots in the popular tests featured on TheSpark. OkCupid launched in February 2004. Since 2009, Rudder has written and researched OkCupid's popular blog, OkTrends.

Rudder also plays in indie band Bishop Allen. He and Justin Rice are the band's two permanent members, and they write the band's songs. On stage, Rudder plays guitar and ukelele; on Bishop Allen's recordings he plays most of the instruments save drums and piano.
