I headed to Kaliningrad Russia to try some tasty Russian cuisine and was surprised at how delicious the menu was! From Pelmeni and Rassolnik, to Kotlety and Pirozhki this was a fun experience!
More about Russian food from Wikipedia: Russian cuisine is a collection of the different cooking traditions of the Russian people. The cuisine is diverse, as Russia is by area the largest country in the world.[1] Russian cuisine derives its varied character from the vast and multi-cultural expanse of Russia. Moreover, it is necessary to divide Russian traditional cuisine and Soviet cuisine, which has its own peculiarity. Its foundations were laid by the peasant food of the rural population in an often harsh climate, with a combination of plentiful fish, pork, poultry, caviar, mushrooms, berries, and honey. Crops of rye, wheat, barley and millet provided the ingredients for a plethora of breads, pancakes, pies, cereals, beer and vodka. Soups and stews full of flavor are centered on seasonal or storable produce, fish and meats. This wholly native food remained the staple for the vast majority of Russians well into the 20th century.
Russia's great expansions of culture, influence, and interest during the 16th–18th centuries brought more refined foods and culinary techniques, as well as one of the most refined food countries in the world. It was during this period that smoked meats and fish, pastry cooking, salads and green vegetables, chocolate, ice cream, wines, and juice were imported from abroad. At least for the urban aristocracy and provincial gentry, this opened the doors for the creative integration of these new foodstuffs with traditional Russian dishes. The result is extremely varied in technique, seasoning, and combination.

Russian Beef Chebureki Recipe - Чебуреки с мясом
Never heard of chebureki? Well, if you haven't been to Eastern Europe (and particularly Russia), that's not surprising! Over there it's a massively popular street food, and it's not so different from a Mexican empanada. Chebureki are made from unleavened dough. They're filled with spices, onions and ground meat, and fried in oil. Pop one as a snack or make a plate as an appetizer to share with family and friends.
To make these we will need the following:
320 gr of flour OR 2 1⁄2 cups
125 ml of water OR 1⁄2 cup
4-8 tablespoons olive oil - you can use more if you want more elastic dough
1 teaspoon vodka (optional)
1⁄2 teaspoon sugar (white)
250 gr ground beef
1⁄2 onion (medium, finely chopped)
6 tablespoons of milk
1 teaspoon parsley flakes - or finely chopped fresh parsley
vegetable oil (for deep frying)
salt
pepper
To make these:
Step 1: In a large bowl, sift your flour. Add your sugar and salt, olive oil and vodka. Add water to the flour mixture - a small amount at a time, mixing it and kneading dough until it's even, soft and doesn't stick to your hands. Add a little more flour if the dough is sticky, or water if it's stiff. Place the dough aside and prepare the filling.
Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix together ground beef, finely chopped onion and parsley. Season the mixture with salt and pepper and stir in milk.
Step 3: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough until it is about 1/10-1/8 inch (2.5-3mm) thick. Cut circles using a small tea plate or a cake cutter. Gather the rest of the dough into a ball and roll again. Repeat until you used all the dough.
Step 4: Place about 1.5 - 2 tablespoons of the filling on one side of the circle, leaving 1/2 inch (about 1cm) space at the edges.
Step 5: Fold the other half of the circle over and pinch the edges firmly together using your fingers.
Make sure there is no air inside chebureki and the edges are closed tightly.
Step 6: In a large pan, heat the oil for deep frying - it should cover about 1/2 of a cheburek, reduce heat to medium and place 3 or 4 chebureki into oil. Fry chebureki on both sides until nicely and evenly brown, about 5-8 minutes per each side.
Step 7: Drain on paper towels, let rest for a few minutes. Serve while still hot. Enjoy!!!

Travel video about destination Russia.
Russia is a country full of adventure, culture and vast distances. A continent, a multi-ethnic country and a vast land unites both Europe and Asia. Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe in which both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. The Kremlin is located on a forty metre high hill above the Moskva River and beyond its protective walls are numerous buildings, palaces, towers, squares and churches. The city’s history began with the construction of the Kremlin which lay at the very heart of the city and was for centuries Russia’s spiritual and political centre. A fascinating cruise travels across numerous rivers, canals and lakes within the heart of the former Tsar’s realm, past monasteries and timber built churches. In Uglič the Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed and the incidents that once occurred at this place of death gave rise to a time of confusion. St. Petersburg, known also as the Venice Of The North, contains splendid buildings such as the Winter Palace and the Eremitage. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for the foundation of Isaaks Cathedral that can accommodate a congregation of fourteen thousand. In Port Baikal is the modern Circum-Baikal train that takes a full day to travel around Lake Baikal and is one of the most difficult sections of the Trans-Siberian Railroad that travels from Moscow to as far as Vladivostok. Russia is huge and its nature, culture, immense contrast and dramatic history have formed the fascinating and colourful Russian soul.

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

Take a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russian Federation -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
It looks more like a cluster of brightly colored hot air balloons than a cathedral.
This is St. Basil's, or the "Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin By the Moat".
This flamboyantly shaped and colored building is one of Russia's most important churches.
The cathedral was started in 1555 as eight chapels built around a larger ninth.
There have been several theories about the design of St. Basil's, but no certain answers.
The cathedral has had several additions, and the whole church narrowly escaped destruction under Stalin.
St. Basil's is no longer a church, it now operates as a museum.

Take a tour of Omsk Dormition Cathedral in Omsk, Russia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
A striking feature of the city of Omsk, in southern Russia, is the grand and colorful Dormition Cathedral.
This structure boasts a gleaming white exterior and shiny blue and gold domes, typical of Russian architecture.
These features add to the majesty of the cathedral as both a place of worship and historical monument.
The original Dormition Cathedral was built in the late nineteenth century, designed in the Russian Revival Style.
However, when the Soviets came to power, they destroyed this and many other Russian churches as part of their Communist agenda.
Fortunately, the Omsk Dormition Cathedral was recently rebuilt, to forever regain its beauty and history.

Travel video about destination Moskva in Russia.
Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe. Both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. It has witnessed much change and has become a prosperous city and one of contrast and the superlative, of millionaires and also the very poor. Vasiliya Blazhennovo Khram, Basilius Cathedral, is one of the main landmarks of the Russian metropolis and was built at the command of Moscow sovereign, Ivan The Fourth, also known as Ivan The Terrible, Russia’s first Tsar. The cathedral is representative of Moscow’s architecture with red brick monuments and an accumulation of onion-shaped towers. The Kremlin extends beyond a red wall and various towers that date back to the fifteenth century. Since time immemorial it has been the seat of both tsars and bishops and in front of its walls is Red Square that was once used as a marketplace and also a place of execution. Here the death penalty was declared and immediately carried out. Arbatskaya is a city district west of the Kremlin. In the fifteenth century, the craftsmen and servants of the Tsar lived there and then followed artists, intellectuals and aristocrats. In 1935 the Metro was inaugurated and had thirteen stations. Today there are more than a hundred located along two hundred and sixty kilometres of rail, used by millions each and every day. The Moscow Underground is fast, cheap and quite splendid. Its stations are veritable works of art! When the Tsar’s empire vanished, the realm of the Communist rulers was torn apart. But the mega metropolis of Moscow managed to survive. A restless and powerful city of fantastic culture and truly dramatic history.

Baltica - Russian-Filipino Cuisine: amazing beef stroganoff, great kvas!
I ended up at a party at this Russian restaurant in San Mateo. Even though the party was cool, I remembered the night by the food I ate there. So, I went back the next week to try it for lunch. Russian/Nat
The Soviet Union rightly earned no accolades for its cuisine.
With the opening of Russia to the West, Russian taste buds were eager to eat anything other than their staple of brown bread and tea.
And anything new - exotic cuisines from Latin America to American fast food -- became all the rage.
But now, the Russians are beginning to rediscover their national cuisine the way it was under the tsars.
The aliens have landed.
Russians never really stared a real donut in the face, and now they're fighting back an invasion of "munchkins" and "Boston cremes".
Throughout Moscow the golden arches have risen, Pizza Huts, and even Burger Queens, have been erected.
And the latest arrival in the foreign invasion is the much-hyped Planet Hollywood.
Thousands turned out for the grand opening, but more so to gawk at muscle-bound former Mr. Universe turned Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger than to have a bite to eat.
But it seems Planet Hollywood may have missed the boat.
Many Russians are already sick of designer hamburgers.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"We eat Russian food every day. We just came here for a change and a snack, but our Russian food is much nicer"
SUPER CAPTION: Ivan Ponchenko
And some more patriotic-minded Russians are trying to trample the beast of foreign fast food.
Here at the "Tsar's Hunt" restaurant, Muscovites can enjoy traditional Russian food in a traditional Russian environment.
In this restaurant vodka beats Diet Coke and taxidermy replaces Hollywood memorabilia.
And restaurateurs are convinced that Russians are already sick and tired of these Western imports.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Right now in Moscow we have any kind of cuisine from any country. We have fast food, pasta restaurants, Pizza Huts, McDonalds, and all kinds of burger joints, but it isn't our food. We want the kind of food we had before and that's exactly the kind we will always want."
SUPER CAPTION: Alexei Cheleginov, Russian restaurateur
Russian food isn't for those who want to trim down -- Russians love all the fat and sugar -- thick mayonnaise salads, sweet blinys, tomatoes stuffed with anything.
And the king of Russian cuisine, all the way from Siberia -- meat-filled ravioli known as pelmeni.
Cooks at the "Tsar's Hunt" toil away in the kitchen to help those confused and lost taste buds take that nostalgic trip down memory lane back to the kitchens of their grandmothers.
And they know exactly who their clientele is.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"It's Russians, real Russians that are sick of Latin American and Asian cuisine and who pine for their food that they were raised on."
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Bogdanov, Russian cook
But with Dunkin Donuts and a bottle of vodka both within arm's reach, maybe Russians just have a bad case of option fatigue.
For the one thing that today's Russia can offer in abundance that the Soviet Union never could is choice.

One of the most essential accompaniments to any Russian snack is of course, the pickles. No Russian dish is complete without them and they are surprisingly simple to make (with of course many possible varieties).
Dmitry Leus Cuisine prefers a dill, garlic, salt, pepper and white wine vinegar recipe to keep things simple. The size of the pickles is completely up to you. You could take a large cucumber and and chop it up into batons or you could find some smaller ones and keep them whole.
Dmitry Leus Cuisine’s favourite are the smaller sized one. Put the washed cucumbers in cold water for 5-10 hours, at some point during this time sterilize the jar and put the dill, garlic, pepper and salt into the bottom of it. When the cucumbers are ready add them into the jar and pour in boiling water. Let it sit there for 10-15 minutes before pouring it into a pan and set to boil. Add more seasoning and then the vinegar. Add the boiling liquid back into the jar on top of the other ingredients and close the lid. Leave to cool upside down then place in the fridge. Vinegary perfection!

Russian cuisine (Russian: Русская кухня, tr. Russkaya kukhnya) is a collection of the different cooking traditions of the Russian people. The cuisine is diverse, as Russia is by area the largest country in the world. Russian cuisine derives its varied character from the vast and multi-cultural expanse of Russia. Moreover, it is necessary to divide Russian traditional cuisine and Soviet cuisine, which has its own peculiarity. Its foundations were laid by the peasant food of the rural population in an often harsh climate, with a combination of plentiful fish, poultry, game, mushrooms, berries, and honey. Crops of rye, wheat, barley and millet provided the ingredients for a plethora of breads, pancakes, cereals, beer and vodka.

Very few now doubt that we are harming planet earth and very seriously. What are we doing wrong and why are we the only species of life upon this planet creating these problems? It is now clear that it is the very way that we have chosen to live that is at fault. That the very lifestyle that we lead, or aspire to is incompatible with the very planet we live upon.

This is one of the oldest prisons in Russia and one of the first prisons for life sentences in the Orenburg region. Originally it was a jail (Ostrog) for a lifetime of hard labor. The first mention of this relates to 1745. After the suppression of the Pugachev's Rebellion in 1773, the prison was built for the deportation of robbers. The prison got its unofficial name from a fountain with a sculpture depicting a black dolphin, which is set before the main entrance. The sculpture was made by the prisoners themselves.[citation needed]
It is near the Kazakhstan border. The prison houses approximately 700 of the most serious criminals in Russia. It holds paedophiles, murderers, terrorists, cannibals, serial killers and so called "maniacs".[2] Prisoners at Black Dolphin are imprisoned for life.[1] Prison guards place blindfolds on arriving prisoners so that they can not map out the prison or plan escapes. Prisoners are also blindfolded whenever they are transported between buildings. Also unique to Black Dolphin is the form in which guards escort inmates; prisoners are kept bent over at the waist while a guard holds their handcuffed hands behind their back, higher than the inmate's hips. This "stress position" allows for maximum control over the inmate, while depriving the inmate a view of their surroundings as well as preventing them from escaping and attacking prison staff. While there have been rumors of inmate abuse and misconduct at Black Dolphin Prison, there are no confirmed reports or complaints.[3]
Inmates are kept isolated and housed in a cell that has a set of three steel doors. For 90 minutes, a day they are transported to a larger cell for exercise time. During this time, the cell is searched for contraband or illegal items that inmates are not permitted to have. Prisoners at Black Dolphin are kept under 24 hour supervision; they are not permitted to rest or sit on their bunks from the time they are awoken until it is time to sleep again. Every 15 minutes, a guard makes rounds to check on each cell to ensure inmates are complying with the rules. The prisoners are fed soup four times a day. [2]
There are 700 inmates and 900 officers of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

Street Food Around The World - Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, constituting the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. Istanbul is a transcontinental city in Eurasia, with its commercial and historical centre lying on the European side and about a third of its population living on the Asian side of Eurasia. With a population of 14.4 million, the city forms the largest urban agglomeration in Europe[d] as well as the largest in the Middle East, and the sixth-largest city proper in the world. Istanbul's vast area of 5,343 square kilometers (2,063 sq mi) is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is the administrative capital. Istanbul straddles the Bosphorus strait in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea.
Turkish cuisine is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of Central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan cuisines.
The country's position between the East and the Mediterranean Sea helped the Turks gain complete control of major trade routes, and an ideal environment allowed plants and animals to flourish. Turkish cuisine was well established by the mid-1400s, the beginning of the Ottoman Empire's six hundred-year reign. Yogurt salads, fish in olive oil, and stuffed and wrapped vegetables became Turkish staples. The empire, eventually spanning from Austria to northern Africa, used its land and water routes to import exotic ingredients from all over the world. By the end of the 1500s, the Ottoman court housed over 1,400 live-in cooks and passed laws regulating the freshness of food. Since the fall of the empire in World War I (1914–1918) and the establishment of the Turkish Republic, foreign food such as French hollandaise sauce and western fast food have made their way into the modern Turkish diet.

Georgian cuisine refers to the cooking styles and dishes with origins in the nation of Georgia and prepared by Georgian people around the world. The Georgian cuisine is specific to the country, but also contains some influences from the European and Middle Eastern culinary traditions, as well as those of the surrounding Western Asia. The cuisine offers a variety of dishes with various herbs and spices. Each historical province of Georgia has its own distinct culinary tradition, with variations such as Megrelian, Kakhetian, and Imeretian cuisines. In addition to various meat dishes, Georgian cuisine also offers a variety of vegetarian dishes.
Georgian cuisine is the result of the rich interplay of culinary ideas carried along the trade routes by merchants and travelers alike. The importance of both food and drink to Georgian culture is best observed during a feast called supra, when a huge assortment of dishes are prepared, always accompanied by large amounts of wine, and that can last for hours. In a Georgian feast, the role of the tamada (toastmaster) is an important and honoured position.
Georgian restaurants were prevalent in Russia throughout the 20th century, assisted by the fact that Joseph Stalin was himself an ethnic Georgian and particularly fond of his native food and drink. In Russia, all major cities have many Georgian restaurants, and Russian restaurants often feature Georgian food items on their menu.
In countries of the former Soviet Union, Georgian food is also popular due to the immigration of Georgians to other Soviet republics

The Chukchi are an indigenous people living in Russia's far northeast. As the climate is too inhospitable to grow crops, the sea has always been their main source of food. The population of 16,000 subsists primarily on a diet of marine mammals, the meat from which provides locals with enough fat-rich food to see them through the harsh winters. By and large, hunting species such as the grey whale is illegal. However, as the Chukchi's survival and traditional way of life is dependent on this activity, the International Whaling Commission grants them an annual whaling quota. Moreover, the meat from these animals is not sold, but distributed among the local population for free.
