Jan Steen’s Card Players (ca. 1660) and Dutch Genre Painting

Dutch painters of the 17th century fed an avid market for pictures of vice and virtue in both humble and grand settings. This picture by Holland’s leading painter of humorous folklife, from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection, shows an overdressed soldier being gulled by a girl in an elegant-looking house of ill repute. Walsh discusses Jan Steen’s career and other varieties of genre painting.

"Korean Painting" is a 32-minute Korean film, narrated in English, made sometime in the 1980s. It offers a packed overview of movements in Korean painting over the last 1400 years, including murals painted in royal tombs and Buddhist paintings from 800 years ago, right up to painters still working in the traditional style in the 20th century. The emphasis is on painters who were active in the 18th and 19th centuries painting landscapes, portraits, animals, or scenes of life among the people (genre painting). Many painters are highlighted, including Ahn Gyeon, Yi Ahm, Jo Hee-ryong, Shin Yun-bok, Kang Sehwang, Jeong Seon, Jang Seung-eop, Kim Hong-do, and Kim Eunho. 95% of the film is devoted to shots of the paintings, with occasional cuts to galleries and museum exhibits and the actual landscapes that inspired the painters. The film closes with scenes of contemporary painters and students at work. It's quite an informative and lovely piece. REFORMING THE IMAGE NORTHERN EUROPE IN THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE
February 4 – April 27, 2013
This exhibition, curated by eleven Dutch art history seminar students and professor Christopher Atkins, includes paintings, prints, sculpture and historical artifacts from the 16th-18th century Netherlands, Germany, England, France and colonial Queens.
It shows how art pictured new attitudes about man and the natural world and reflected a rise in democracy and the middle classes. In sites impacted by the Protestant Reformation, religious, social, and scientific revolutions engendered a flowering of secular subject matter and naturalistic aesthetics that gave birth to modern art genres.
The exhibition examines how artworks provide a glimpse of history and evidence of the values and structure of societies, focusing on Dutch art and culture, well represented in the GTM. Themes addressed include: the emergence of capitalism, the market, the individual and the development of taste, looking at newly embraced subjects such as landscape, portraiture, still life, and genre scenes, in contrast to religious and dynastic subjects of the pre-modern era.

Ukiyo-e, or ukiyo-ye (浮世絵, Japanese: [u.ki.jo.e], "pictures of the floating world"), is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. It was aimed at the prosperous merchant class in the urbanizing Edo period (1603–1867). Amongst the popular themes were depictions of beautiful women; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica.
Edo (modern Tokyo) became the seat of government for the military dictatorship in the early 17th century. The merchant class at the bottom of the social order found themselves the greatest beneficiaries of the city's rapid economic growth. Many indulged in the entertainments of kabuki theatre, courtesans, and geisha of the pleasure districts. The term ukiyo ("floating world") came to describe this hedonistic lifestyle. Printed or painted "ukiyo-e" images of this environment emerged in the late 17th century; they were popular with the merchant class, who had become wealthy enough to afford to decorate their homes with such works.

How to paint a sunset. This is a free Oil Painting Lesson Online from the art class demonstration I taught in my studio - how to paint a Sunset with Mountains by professional artist Bill Inman.
I love painting sky and cloud scenes - so much pure color to play with.
We talk a lot about composition, edge quality, color harmonies and warm and cool color temperatures. We also discuss the need for painting from life.
If you've ever struggled with color temperature and muddy color you will appreciate the struggle I have between the cool lavenders in the clouds and the warm reds from the setting sun.
It takes a while to really get the feeling of the sun low on the horizon, but it all comes together beautifully at the end!
The students give some excellent suggestions as well that dramatically improve the painting.
There is a 10 minute section where my students ask me about healthy eating and I discuss Dara Torres and learning about Living Fuel for optimum nutrition.
There are moments where nothing seems to be happening - that is when I am thinking and analyzing.
I do not have the equipment to mic the students so their questions are often lost. Hopefully that will not detract from the overall learning opportunity.

About the Artist:
Learn from impressionist Bill Inman as he demonstrates for his class how to breathe life into loose abstract color masses.
He teaches a 3 hour painting class twice a month in his studio and thought these videos would be helpful for his students to refer back to. He then decided to share these with his followers on YouTube.
He is classically trained with 5 years of figure, head and fashion drawing from the model and holds an MFA in studio painting.
He sells his work through galleries around the country as a full time artist.
These colors and techniques generally apply equally well with oil or acrylic paint.
"My goal is to help viewers feel like they are looking out a window or doorway into a beautiful scene, one that beckons to forget the world a while and simply enjoy the peace and serenity, the incredible beauty Heavenly Father has provided."

Bill has been a full time artist for more than 20 years and sold his first painting in a professional gallery at the age of 17 while still in high school.
He is a recipient of the Congressional Art Award, has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and has his work in collections around the world.
He teaches a 3 hour painting class twice a month in his studio and periodic workshops.

Genre art
Genre art is the pictorial representation in any of various media of scenes or events from everyday life, such as markets, domestic settings, interiors, parties, inn scenes, and street scenes. Such representations (also called genre works, genre scenes, or genre views) may be realistic, imagined, or romanticized by the artist. Some variations of the term genre art specify the medium or type of visual work, as in genre painting, genre prints, genre photographs, and so on.
Rather confusingly, genre works, especially when referring to the painting of the Dutch Golden Age and Flemish Baroque painting—the great periods of genre works—may also be used as an umbrella term for painting in various specialized categories such as still-life, marine painting, architectural painting and animal painting, as well as genre scenes proper where the emphasis is on human figures. Painting was divided into a hierarchy of genres, with history painting at the top, as the most difficult and therefore prestigious, and still life and architectural painting at the bottom. But history paintings are a genre in painting, not genre works.

"Korean Painting" is a 32-minute Korean film, narrated in English, made sometime in the 1980s. It offers a packed overview of movements in Korean painting over the last 1400 years, including murals painted in royal tombs and Buddhist paintings from 800 years ago, right up to painters still working in the traditional style in the 20th century. The emphasis is on painters who were active in the 18th and 19th centuries painting landscapes, portraits, animals, or scenes of life among the people (genre painting). Many painters are highlighted, including Ahn Gyeon, Yi Ahm, Jo Hee-ryong, Shin Yun-bok, Kang Sehwang, Jeong Seon, Jang Seung-eop, Kim Hong-do, and Kim Eunho. 95% of the film is devoted to shots of the paintings, with occasional cuts to galleries and museum exhibits and the actual landscapes that inspired the painters. The film closes with scenes of contemporary painters and students at work. It's quite an informative and lovely piece. This exhibition, curated by eleven Dutch art history seminar students and professor Christopher Atkins, includes paintings, prints, sculpture and historical artifacts from the 16th-18th century Netherlands, Germany, England, France and colonial Queens.
It shows how art pictured new attitudes about man and the natural world and reflected a rise in democracy and the middle classes. In sites impacted by the Protestant Reformation, religious, social, and scientific revolutions engendered a flowering of secular subject matter and naturalistic aesthetics that gave birth to modern art genres.
The exhibition examines how artworks provide a glimpse of history and evidence of the values and structure of societies, focusing on Dutch art and culture, well represented in the GTM. Themes addressed include: the emergence of capitalism, the market, the individual and the development of taste, looking at newly embraced subjects such as landscape, portraiture, still life, and genre scenes, in contrast to religious and dynastic subjects of the pre-modern era.

Ukiyo-e, or ukiyo-ye (浮世絵, Japanese: [u.ki.jo.e], "pictures of the floating world"), is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. It was aimed at the prosperous merchant class in the urbanizing Edo period (1603–1867). Amongst the popular themes were depictions of beautiful women; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica.
Edo (modern Tokyo) became the seat of government for the military dictatorship in the early 17th century. The merchant class at the bottom of the social order found themselves the greatest beneficiaries of the city's rapid economic growth. Many indulged in the entertainments of kabuki theatre, courtesans, and geisha of the pleasure districts. The term ukiyo ("floating world") came to describe this hedonistic lifestyle. I do not have the equipment to mic the students so their questions are often lost. Hopefully that will not detract from the overall learning opportunity.

He sells his work through galleries around the country as a full time artist.
These colors and techniques generally apply equally well with oil or acrylic paint.
