The highly anticipated, and high end art auction season arrives with a specially curated sale. Items includes a sculpture of a kneeling Hitler by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and a ball suspended in a water tank by Jeff Koons. Christie's "Bound to Fail" themed sale kicks off the weeklong New York auctions of modern, post-war and contemporary art at Christie's and Sotheby's. Cattelan's controversial sculpture "Him" appears as a small child kneeling in prayer when approached from the rear but from the front, the unmistakable likeness of Hitler comes into view. It's estimated to bring $10 to $15 million dollars.

Contemporary art is art produced at this present point in time or art produced since World War II. The definition of the word contemporary would support the first view, but museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II.
Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, with the advent of Modern and Postmodern art forms, distinctions between what is generally regarded as the fine arts and the low arts have started to fade, as contemporary high art continues to challenge these concepts by mixing with popular culture.
Contemporary art is exhibited by commercial contemporary art galleries, private collectors, art auctions, corporations, publicly funded arts organizations, contemporary art museums or by artists themselves in artist-run spaces. Contemporary artists are supported by grants, awards and prizes as well as by direct sales of their work.
There are close relationships between publicly funded contemporary art organisations and the commercial sector. For instance, in Britain a handful of dealers represent the artists featured in leading publicly funded contemporary art museums.

The highly anticipated, and high end art auction season arrives with a specially curated sale. Items includes a sculpture of a kneeling Hitler by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and a ball suspended in a water tank by Jeff Koons. Christie's "Bound to Fail" themed sale kicks off the weeklong New York auctions of modern, post-war and contemporary art at Christie's and Sotheby's. Cattelan's controversial sculpture "Him" appears as a small child kneeling in prayer when approached from the rear but from the front, the unmistakable likeness of Hitler comes into view. It's estimated to bring $10 to $15 million dollars.

Glenn Lowry, former F|S curator of Islamic art and now director of the Museum of Modern Art, shares a unique perspective on the emergence of contemporary Middle Eastern art. By using a mix of documentary and archival evidence, biographical information, photography, and film, each of these artists creates a complex story that explores how history is conceived, written, and received. Their work is especially relevant today as much of the Middle East is in transition, with competing visions and histories seeking to define how this region will be known. But as the work reveals, the future is often prefigured in the past.
