While "watchmaking" and "Switzerland" are at times considered to be synonymous – at least by the general public – watch aficionados are astutely aware of the rich manufacturing heritage beyond the Swiss border, in places like Germany, Britain, and Japan. A couple of months back, a few members of the HODINKEE team had the opportunity to pay a comprehensive visit to the latter, where we were given access to two of Seiko's manufacturing facilities, as well as the Seiko Museum. In this, the latest installment of our "Inside the Manufacture" series, we take a look at the watchmakers and processes behind the broad range of Seiko offerings, including mechanical, quartz, Astron GPS Solar, and Spring Drive models. From Tokyo to the northern city of Morioka and back south to Shiojiri, we crisscrossed the island nation, covering some 500 miles by high-speed train over the course of a week. Seiko is renown to propose innovative and resistant watches for a much cheaper price than its Swiss competitors. It is a Japanese giant that masters all kind of watches, from the simplest ones to the minute repeaters and tourbillons labeled under the name of its sister brand Credor. The new products launched at Baselworld this year illustrate this rare aspect of getting a lot of technical value for not so much money starting with the new Presage collection. All the models come with automatic winding movements with a price starting at about 400 Swiss francs for the simplest hours, minutes, seconds version with a case made out of steel. They have in particular adorned dials with a sort of inverted Clous de Paris pattern that creates very unexpected and beautiful reflects. More refined versions present dial made out of enamel or urushi lacquer. They have also Arabic numbers with a “12” in red in reference to the first wristwatch of Seiko, the Laurel, launched in 1912 and that had such a number.
Seiko also extends its Premier line with more architectural and pure models coming both with quartz and mechanical movement. Here again, the pricing is aggressive with a first quartz model available for about 380 Swiss francs.
Going to the next level, the prestigious Grand Seiko line welcomes this year the first 8 days power reserve version with a dial covered with diamonds dust. Its reflections are just as mysterious as subtle. New sport models are also integrated with a 5 elements case which case bands are made out of ceramic. The first limited edition comes with a Spring drive chronograph and a green dial evoking the onbashira festival taking place in the Suwa area where the creation studio of Seiko is. The onbashira festival is a whole ritual dedicated to the fir trees of the region. For this reason, the dial is dark green colored. The second limited edition has also a caliber equipped with a Spring drive escapement, an electro mechanical regulator, and displays a second time zone, the date and has a power reserve indicator in addition with the usual functions. But Seiko created a second loop of limited edition, this time in collaboration with the Parisian concept store Colette. They present straps printed with extracts of pictures from the famous Japanese photographers Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama and they will be available in this shop only.
The most prestigious line from Seiko is called Credor and comes this year with what it said as the smallest tourbillon movement in terms of volume, but also the first tourbillon from Seiko, the Fugaku. In addition to the technique supervised by Master watchmaker Satoshi Hiraga , three different master craftsmen worked to decorate the movement with engraving and urushi lacquer finishing in particular. The decoration symbolizes the Great Wave of Kanagawa from the famous ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai drawing. In addition, a declination with a skeletonized and also decorated movement has been introduced.
Going into sports, Seiko extends its diving Prospex lines with several new references including a “PADI” version with day and date for about 460 Swiss Francs and a GMT with a Kinetic automatic winding quartz movement for about 680 Swiss francs.
Going into electronic watches the famous GPS solar quartz line Astron comes with movements displaying fewer functions than the previous ones. Thus the dials, that capture the sunlight to transform it in electricity, are more visible, in particular the version with superior layer made out of mother of pearl.

In this episode I revisit my favourite aspects of the James Cameron science fiction epic and explain why this watch was so perfectly cast in the "Aliens" movie. I also go into a brief history of Giugiaro and finally I share my first impressions of the watch in an unboxing.

The Seiko "Turtle" Prospex Automatic Diver's 200M SRP series reissue is one of the very best I've seen from Seiko divers, especially considering it's very reasonable sub $300 price (I scored mine for $230 off of eBay!). The gilt dial printing and thick lume pips are gorgeous and the 4R36movement is a considerable step up from the dated 7S26. The cushion case wears superb. I would pick my favorite colorway from the SRP line and you would have the ultimate affordable do-anything diver. I'm calling it: Move over SNK, the SRP has taken the throne.

Introduced in the early 2000's, the Seiko 5 SNK809 Military or "Little Flieger" is an immensely popular and well regarded entry-level automatic watch easily found around $50 which I've been requested to review many times. In the flesh it's a small but study piece with an impeccable vintage field or military style dial and a bold handset. I discuss the pro and cons of the 7S26 movement, how the watch wears, and give my perspective about why this watch is a solid choice as a first automatic watch, especially at around $50-$60.

Today I review the legendary and cult classic Seiko Monster. But this is no ordinary creature of the deep, this is the 3rd generation Prospex Monster! I have always wanted to review this watch but what has put me off was the large size of some of its relatives in the Monster family. Surprisingly it wears like an SKX making it suited not just for the larger wrist. While not the most accurate, it packs some truly impressive features, however, it is not without its drawbacks. Despite a few negatives, there is no denying this is a truly unique and highly original diver unlike any other.

Today I review a classic in the making. Those of you who follow my channel, will undoubtedly know of my respect and admiration for Seiko's domestic specialities in the SARB line. To complete my insatiable appetite for these amazingly high quality but affordable little stunners, I review maybe the greatest of all the SARBs, the legendary "Alpinist" (SARB017). This is no ordinary SARB, designed for mountaineering in mind, or "Yamaotoko" a "mountain climbing Gentleman" in Japanese, this rather dressy number boasts a diver's water resistance, Diashock equipped upgraded movement, 50+ hours of power reserve and an inner rotating bezel compass all in a compact traditional size.
To buy one from within the USA I recommend only the best...

Seiko Holdings Corporation (セイコーホールディングス株式会社, Seikō Hōrudingusu Kabushiki-gaisha) (TYO: 8050), more commonly known simply as Seiko (/ˈseɪkoʊ/ SAY-koh), is a Japanese company that manufactures and sells watches, clocks, electronic devices, semiconductors and optical products.
History and ongoing developments
The company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called "K. Hattori" (服部時計店, Hattori Tokeiten) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan. Eleven years later, in 1892, he began to produce clocks under the name Seikosha (精工舎, Seikōsha), meaning roughly "House of Exquisite Workmanship". According to Seiko's official company history, titled "A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko" (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning "exquisite" or "success" ("exquisite" is usually written 精巧 from Chinese jīngqiǎo, while the meaning "success" is usually written 成功 from Chinese chénggōng)
The first watches produced under the Seiko brand appeared in 1924. In 1969, Seiko introduced the Astron, the world's first production quartz watch; when it was introduced, it cost the same as a medium-sized car. Seiko later went on to introduce the first quartz chronograph. In the late 1980s, Seiko produced the first Kinetic watch that combined the self-energizing attributes of an automatic watch with quartz accuracy. The watch is entirely powered by its movement in everyday wear.

Plot: A newlywed couple Ben and Jane move to Japan for a promising job opportunity - a fashion shoot in Tokyo. During their trip on a dark forest road they experience a tragic car accident, leading to the death of a young local girl. Upon regaining consciousness, they find no trace of her body. A Visit To Seiko Japan
While "watchmaking" and "Switzerland" are at times considered to be synonymous – at least by the general public – watch aficionados are astutely aware of the rich manufacturing heritage beyond the Swiss border, in places like Germany, Britain, and Japan. A couple of months back, a few members of the HODINKEE team had the opportunity to pay a comprehensive visit to the latter, where we were given access to two of Seiko's manufacturing facilities, as well as the Seiko Museum. Seiko New Watches at Baselworld 2016
Seiko is renown to propose innovative and resistant watches for a much cheaper price than its Swiss competitors. It is a Japanese giant that masters all kind of watches, from the simplest ones to the minute repeaters and tourbillons labeled under the name of its sister brand Credor. The new products launched at Baselworld this year illustrate this rare aspect of getting a lot of technical value for not so much money starting with the new Presage collection. All the models come with automatic winding movements with a price starting at about 400 Swiss francs for the simplest hours, minutes, seconds version with a case made out of steel. Today I review the legendary and cult classic Seiko Monster. But this is no ordinary creature of the deep, this is the 3rd generation Prospex Monster! I have always wanted to review this watch but what has put me off was the large size of some of its relatives in the Monster family. Surprisingly it wears like an SKX making it suited not just for the larger wrist. While not the most accurate, it packs some truly impressive features, however, it is not without its drawbacks. A couple of months back, a few members of the HODINKEE team had the opportunity to pay a comprehensive visit to the latter, where we were given access to two of Seiko's manufacturing facilities, as well as the Seiko Museum. In this, the latest installment of our "Inside the Manufacture" series, we take a look at the watchmakers and processes behind the broad range of Seiko offerings, including mechanical, quartz, Astron GPS Solar, and Spring Drive models. Seiko is renown to propose innovative and resistant watches for a much cheaper price than its Swiss competitors. It is a Japanese giant that masters all kind of watches, from the simplest ones to the minute repeaters and tourbillons labeled under the name of its sister brand Credor. The new products launched at Baselworld this year illustrate this rare aspect of getting a lot of technical value for not so much money starting with the new Presage collection. All the models come with automatic winding movements with a price starting at about 400 Swiss francs for the simplest hours, minutes, seconds version with a case made out of steel. They have in particular adorned dials with a sort of inverted Clous de Paris pattern that creates very unexpected and beautiful reflects. More refined versions present dial made out of enamel or urushi lacquer. They have also Arabic numbers with a “12” in red in reference to the first wristwatch of Seiko, the Laurel, launched in 1912 and that had such a number.
Seiko also extends its Premier line with more architectural and pure models coming both with quartz and mechanical movement. Here again, the pricing is aggressive with a first quartz model available for about 380 Swiss francs.
Going to the next level, the prestigious Grand Seiko line welcomes this year the first 8 days power reserve version with a dial covered with diamonds dust. Its reflections are just as mysterious as subtle. New sport models are also integrated with a 5 elements case which case bands are made out of ceramic. The first limited edition comes with a Spring drive chronograph and a green dial evoking the onbashira festival taking place in the Suwa area where the creation studio of Seiko is. The onbashira festival is a whole ritual dedicated to the fir trees of the region. For this reason, the dial is dark green colored. The second limited edition has also a caliber equipped with a Spring drive escapement, an electro mechanical regulator, and displays a second time zone, the date and has a power reserve indicator in addition with the usual functions. But Seiko created a second loop of limited edition, this time in collaboration with the Parisian concept store Colette. They present straps printed with extracts of pictures from the famous Japanese photographers Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama and they will be available in this shop only.
The most prestigious line from Seiko is called Credor and comes this year with what it said as the smallest tourbillon movement in terms of volume, but also the first tourbillon from Seiko, the Fugaku. In addition to the technique supervised by Master watchmaker Satoshi Hiraga , three different master craftsmen worked to decorate the movement with engraving and urushi lacquer finishing in particular.
