Among the most seminal R&B; and doo wop groups of all time, the Moonglows' lineup featured some of the genre's greatest pure singers. The original lineup from Louisville included Bobby Lester, Harvey Fuqua, Alexander Graves, and Prentiss Barnes, with guitarist Billy Johnson. They were originally called the Crazy Sounds, but were renamed by disc jockey Alan Freed as the Moonglows. The group also cut some recordings as the Moonlighters. Their first major hit was the number one R&B; gem "Sincerely" for Chess in 1954, which reached number 20 on the pop charts. They enjoyed five more Top Ten R&B; hits on Chess from 1955 to 1958, among them "Most of All," "We Go Together," "See Saw," and "Please Send Me Someone to Love," as well as "Ten Commandments of Love." Fuqua, the nephew of Charlie Fuqua of the Ink Spots, left in 1958. He recorded "Ten Commandments of Love" as Harvey & the Moonglows with Marvin Gaye, Reese Palmner, James Knowland, and Chester Simmons before founding his own label, Tri-Phi. Fuqua created and produced the Spinners in 1961 and wrote and produced for Motown until the early '70s. The Moonglows disbanded in the '60s, then reunited in 1972 with Fuqua, Lester, Graves, Doc Williams, and Chuck Lewis. Melanie Safka was born on 3rd February 1947 in Queens, New York, USA. She is a pop and folk American singer and songwriter.
Biography and Career:
Melanie Safka was born in Queens, New York and grew up in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.
Her first performance was at the age of four on the radio show 'Live Like A Millionaire', performing the song 'Gimme a Little Kiss'. Safka studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She signed her first recording contract to in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village while studying.
She released two singles on the label for Columbia Records, whom she signed initially. Later, she signed contract with Buddah Records and released the song 'Bobo's Party' in 1969 in Europe. This reached Number-1 in France. She also recei
ved rave reviews from Billboard Magazine for her debut album.
In 1969, at the Woodstock music festival, Melanie sang 'Birthday of the Sun'.
In 1970, Melanie's spoken-word track 'Lay Down', 'Candles in the Rain' were Her first Top ten hit in America. She left Buddah Records and produced albums and she formed her own label called 'Neighborhood Records' in 1971.
'Brand New Key' was the number-1 on the Billboard charts and sold over three million copies.

The McGuire Sisters were a singing trio in American popular music. The group was composed of three sisters; Christine McGuire (born July 30, 1926), Dorothy McGuire (born February 13, 1928), and Phyllis McGuire (born February 14, 1931). Among their most popular songs are "Sincerely" and "Sugartime".
The McGuire sisters were born in Middletown, Ohio and grew up in Miamisburg where their mother, Lillie, was an ordained minister of the Miamisburg First Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) and let them sing in the church as young girls. They sang at weddings, funerals and church revivals. When they started in 1935, the youngest sister, Phyllis, was only four years old. Eventually, they sang at occasions other than church-related ones, and, by 1949, they were singing at military bases and veterans' hospitals. They incorporated a more diverse repertoire for those events, expanding into more than the usual hymns they had sung at church.
In 1952, they appeared on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, and, as a result, Godfrey hired them for his other shows, where they remained for seven years. They performed for five Presidents of the United States: (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush), and for Queen Elizabeth II.
The sisters maintained a busy television schedule, making frequent appearances on popular variety hours hosted by Ed Sullivan, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye, Milton Berle, Andy Williams, Perry Como and Red Skelton. The trio was dressed and coiffed identically and performed their synchronized body movements and hand gestures with military precision. Their recordings of "Sincerely," "Picnic," and "Sugartime" all sold over one million copies.
In 1968, they retired from public performance. Phyllis McGuire continued to perform solo for a time. Since then, the sisters have made occasional public appearances. In 1994, they were inducted into the National Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In 2001, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They have also been inducted into the Coca-Cola Hall of Fame and the Headliners' Hall of Fame. In 2004, they reunited to perform in a PBS special Magic Moments: The Best of '50s Pop.

Sincerely was originally recorded by The Moonglows,(song was written by Harvey Fuqua and Alan Freed) who scored a number one single on the Juke Box and number twenty pop. The biggest-selling version was a cover version recorded by The McGuire Sisters, entering the charts in 1954 and reaching number one the next year. Many Rhythm & Blues collectors decry the cover version by the McGuire Sisters which kept the Moonglows off the Pop charts, but it is said Fuqua stole lyrics from a 1951 Dominoes tune, "That's What You're Doing To Me". The bridge in both songs is almost identical: "Lord, won't you tell me/ Why I love that woman so?/ She doesn't want me/ But I'll never let her go". In 1988 the country quartet Forester Sisters reached #8 on the Billboard Hot Country chart with their remake of the song.
Additionally Bobby Vee released Sincerely in 1960 and The Four Seasons released their version in 1964. There are likely other releases. My favorite is by The McGuire's.

The McGuire Sisters were a singing trio in American popular music. The McGuire sisters were born in Middletown, Ohio and grew up in Miamisburg where their mother, Lillie, was an ordained minister of the Miamisburg First Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) and let them sing in the church as young girls. They sang at weddings, funerals and church revivals. When they started in 1935, the youngest sister, Phyllis, was only four years old. Eventually, they sang at occasions other than church-related ones, and, by 1949, they were singing at military bases and veterans' hospitals. They incorporated a more diverse repertoire for those events, expanding into more than the usual hymns they had sung at church. In 1952, they appeared on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, and, as a result, Godfrey hired them for his other shows, where they remained for seven years. They performed for five Presidents of the United States: (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush), and for Queen Elizabeth II. The sisters maintained a busy television schedule, making frequent appearances on popular variety hours hosted by Ed Sullivan, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye, Milton Berle, Andy Williams, Perry Como and Red Skelton. The trio was dressed and coiffed identically and performed their synchronized body movements and hand gestures with military precision. Their recordings of "Sincerely," "Picnic," and "Sugartime" all sold over one million copies. In 1968, they retired from public performance. Phyllis McGuire continued to perform solo for a time. Since then, the sisters have made occasional public appearances. In 1994, they were inducted into the National Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In 2001, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They have also been inducted into the Coca-Cola Hall of Fame and the Headliners' Hall of Fame. In 2004, they reunited to perform in a PBS special Magic Moments: The Best of '50s Pop. In 1958 their mother, Lilly McGuire, appeared as a guest challenger on the television game show To Tell the Truth. Sincerely Sincerely was originally recorded by The Moonglows,(song was written by Harvey Fuqua and Alan Freed) who scored a number one single on the Juke Box and number twenty pop. The biggest-selling version was a cover version recorded by The McGuire Sisters, entering the charts in 1954 and reaching number one the next year. Many Rhythm & Blues collectors decry the cover version by the McGuire Sisters which kept the Moonglows off the Pop charts, but it is said Fuqua stole lyrics from a 1951 Dominoes tune, "That's What You're Doing To Me". The bridge in both songs is almost identical: "Lord, won't you tell me/ Why I love that woman so?/ She doesn't want me/ But I'll never let her go". In 1988 the country quartet Forester Sisters reached #8 on the Billboard Hot Country chart with their remake of the song. Additionally Bobby Vee released Sincerely in 1960 and The Four Seasons released their version in 1964. There are likely other releases. My favorite is by The McGuire's. -

Among the most seminal R&B; and doo wop groups of all time, the Moonglows' lineup featured some of the genre's greatest pure singers. Melanie Safka was born on 3rd February 1947 in Queens, New York, USA. She is a pop and folk American singer and songwriter.
Biography and Career:
Melanie Safka was born in Queens, New York and grew up in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.
Her first performance was at the age of four on the radio show 'Live Like A Millionaire', performing the song 'Gimme a Little Kiss'. Safka studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She signed her first recording contract to in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village while studying.
She released two singles on the label for Columbia Records, whom she signed initially. Later, she signed contract with Buddah Records and released the song 'Bobo's Party' in 1969 in Europe. This reached Number-1 in France. She also recei
ved rave reviews from Billboard Magazine for her debut album.
In 1969, at the Woodstock music festival, Melanie sang 'Birthday of the Sun'.
In 1970, Melanie's spoken-word track 'Lay Down', 'Candles in the Rain' were Her first Top ten hit in America. She left Buddah Records and produced albums and she formed her own label called 'Neighborhood Records' in 1971.
'Brand New Key' was the number-1 on the Billboard charts and sold over three million copies.
She was a follower of Meher Baba and influenced by this, she released few songs influenced like 'Love to Lose Again' and 'Candles in the Rain'. In 2006, she underwent life-altering experience with Mata Amritanandamayi or Amma (Mother) that inspired her to write one of her more recent songs 'Motherhood Of Love'. Melanie, in her career, has sold over 25 million records.
She married Peter Schekeryk on 31st December 1968 and they have three children named Leilah, Jeordie and Beau-Jarred. Melanie currently resides in Nashville.

The original lineup from Louisville included Bobby Lester, Harvey Fuqua, Alexander Graves, and Prentiss Barnes, with guitarist Billy Johnson. They were originally called the Crazy Sounds, but were renamed by disc jockey Alan Freed as the Moonglows. The group also cut some recordings as the Moonlighters. Their first major hit was the number one R&B; gem "Sincerely" for Chess in 1954, which reached number 20 on the pop charts. They enjoyed five more Top Ten R&B; hits on Chess from 1955 to 1958, among them "Most of All," "We Go Together," "See Saw," and "Please Send Me Someone to Love," as well as "Ten Commandments of Love." Fuqua, the nephew of Charlie Fuqua of the Ink Spots, left in 1958. He recorded "Ten Commandments of Love" as Harvey & the Moonglows with Marvin Gaye, Reese Palmner, James Knowland, and Chester Simmons before founding his own label, Tri-Phi. Fuqua created and produced the Spinners in 1961 and wrote and produced for Motown until the early '70s. The Moonglows disbanded in the '60s, then reunited in 1972 with Fuqua, Lester, Graves, Doc Williams, and Chuck Lewis. Melanie Safka was born on 3rd February 1947 in Queens, New York, USA. She is a pop and folk American singer and songwriter.
Biography and Career:
Melanie Safka was born in Queens, New York and grew up in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.
Her first performance was at the age of four on the radio show 'Live Like A Millionaire', performing the song 'Gimme a Little Kiss'. Safka studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She signed her first recording contract to in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village while studying.
She released two singles on the label for Columbia Records, whom she signed initially. Later, she signed contract with Buddah Records and released the song 'Bobo's Party' in 1969 in Europe. This reached Number-1 in France. She also recei
ved rave reviews from Billboard Magazine for her debut album.
In 1969, at the Woodstock music festival, Melanie sang 'Birthday of the Sun'.
In 1970, Melanie's spoken-word track 'Lay Down', 'Candles in the Rain' were Her first Top ten hit in America. She left Buddah Records and produced albums and she formed her own label called 'Neighborhood Records' in 1971.
'Brand New Key' was the number-1 on the Billboard charts and sold over three million copies.
She was a follower of Meher Baba and influenced by this, she released few songs influenced like 'Love to Lose Again' and 'Candles in the Rain'. In 2006, she underwent life-altering experience with Mata Amritanandamayi or Amma (Mother) that inspired her to write one of her more recent songs 'Motherhood Of Love'. Melanie, in her career, has sold over 25 million records.
She married Peter Schekeryk on 31st December 1968 and they have three children named Leilah, Jeordie and Beau-Jarred. Melanie currently resides in Nashville.

The McGuire sisters were born in Middletown, Ohio and grew up in Miamisburg where their mother, Lillie, was an ordained minister of the Miamisburg First Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) and let them sing in the church as young girls. They sang at weddings, funerals and church revivals. When they started in 1935, the youngest sister, Phyllis, was only four years old. Eventually, they sang at occasions other than church-related ones, and, by 1949, they were singing at military bases and veterans' hospitals. They incorporated a more diverse repertoire for those events, expanding into more than the usual hymns they had sung at church.
In 1952, they appeared on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, and, as a result, Godfrey hired them for his other shows, where they remained for seven years. They performed for five Presidents of the United States: (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush), and for Queen Elizabeth II.
The sisters maintained a busy television schedule, making frequent appearances on popular variety hours hosted by Ed Sullivan, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye, Milton Berle, Andy Williams, Perry Como and Red Skelton. The trio was dressed and coiffed identically and performed their synchronized body movements and hand gestures with military precision.
