Shinee ( /ˈʃaɪniː/ SHY-nee; 샤이니; Japanese: シャイニー; Thai: ชายนี่; stylized as SHINee) is a South Korean contemporary R&B boy group[1] formed by SM Entertainment in 2008, one of the largest entertainment companies in Asia. The group consists of Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin. They made their debut on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo with their single, "Replay" (Korean: 누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay)).
Since their debut, Shinee has released three full-length albums, four mini-albums, one live album and various singles. They have also won many awards, held a concert tour and starred in their own reality shows. Shinee is considered to be a fashion icon having started the "Shinee Trend"[2] and are known for their highly synchronized and complicated dancing. They made their Japanese debut on June 22, 2011 by releasing a Japanese version of their single, Replay,[3] followed by their first Japanese studio album, The First on December 7, 2011.
[edit] 2008: Debut and The Shinee World
On May 25, 2008, the group's first mini-album, Replay was released from label company, SM Entertainment.[2] The mini-album debuted at #10 on the Korean music charts and peaked at #8, selling 17,957 copies in the first half of 2008.[4]
On June 7, 2008, Shinee participated in the Dream Concert in the Seoul Olympic Stadium along with other South Korean singers and groups.[5][6] The group won their first award, "Rookie of the Month", at the Cyworld Digital Music Awards on June 22, 2008.[7] Shinee took part in SMTown Live '08, which was held on August 18, 2008 at Seoul Olympic Stadium.[8] On August 23, 2008, they attended the MNet 20's Choice Awards 2008, where they won the "Hot New Star" award.[9]
Shinee released their first full-length album, The Shinee World, on August 28, 2008.[10] The album debuted on the charts at #3, selling 30,000 copies.[11] The first single released from the album was "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)", a cover of "Show the World" by Martin Hoberg Hedegaard,[12] originally written by the Danish songwriting and production team of Thomas Troelsen, Remee and Lucas Secon.[13] On September 18, 2008, Shinee's "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)" was the #1 song on M! Countdown.[14] A few days later, Shinee received the "Mutizen" award for the same single on SBS's Popular Songs.

Shinee participated in the 5th Asia Song Festival, where they received the "Best New Artist" award with Japanese girl group, Berryz Kobo.[15] The group attended the 2008 Style Icon Awards on October 30, 2008, where they won the "Best Style Icon Award".[16] On the same day, a repackage album of The Shinee World titled Amigo was released. The re-packaged album contained three new songs: "Forever or Never", a remix of "Sa. Gye. Han (Love Should Go On)" (사.계.한) and the promotional single "Amigo" (아.미.고).[17] "Amigo" is a shortened version of the Korean phrase "Areumdaun Minyeorueljoahamyeon Gosaenghanda" (아름다운 미녀를 좋아하면 고생한다 lit. Heart Aches When You Fall In Love With a Beauty).[13]
On November 15, 2008, Shinee won the "Best New Male Group" award at the 10th annual Mnet Asian Music Awards, beating fellow newcomers U-KISS, 2PM, 2AM and Mighty Mouth.[18] At the 23rd Annual Golden Disk Awards, they performed a medley of their songs and won the award for "YEPP Newcomer Album".[19]
[edit] 2009: Romeo and 2009, Year of Us
In early February, 2009, Shinee won "Best Newcomer" award along with Davichi and Mighty Mouth at the 18th Seoul Music Awards.[20] Later, SM Entertainment announced that Shinee would make their comeback with their second mini album Romeo on May 21, 2009.[21] On May 18, "Juliette", the first single was released,[22] an instrumental remake of Corbin Bleu's "Deal with It".[23] It was later announced that their comeback was going to be delayed due to Onew damaging his teeth and the release of the mini-album was pushed back to May 25, 2009.[22][24] Shinee eventually had their return performance on June 5, 2009, on KBS's Music Bank, where they received the award for first place.[25]
The group released their third mini-album, 2009, Year Of Us, on October 19, 2009, five months after the release of Romeo. SM Entertainment stated that this EP would showcase the group's vocal talents and demonstrate their unique qualities.[26][27] The lead single, "Ring Ding Dong", was released digitally on October 14; the group had their comeback stage on October 16, on KBS's Music Bank.[28] In early December, 2009, Shinee won the "Popularity" award along with fellow labelmate group, Super Junior, at the 24th Golden Disk Awards.[29] In February, 2010, the group won the main "BonSang" award at the 19th Seoul Music Awards.[30] In December, Shinee also started promoting their song "Jo Jo" with live performances on local music programs.
[edit] 2010: Lucifer and Shinee World concert
SM Entertainment revealed individual photograph teasers of each member for the new album starting with Minho on July 8, 2010 and ending with Key on July 12, 2010. A teaser for the music video of the lead single was released on July 14, 2010 at the official channel of SM Entertainment on YouTube.[31] The group was originally set to have their comeback stage on KBS Music Bank, July 16, to begin their promotions for the new album, however,[32] due to Minho injuring his ankle during filming of Dream Team Season 2 on July 8, the comeback was postponed to July 23, 2010.[33]
The second full length studio album, entitled Lucifer, was released on July 19, 2010 in South Korea. The music video promoting the lead single, also named Lucifer, was released on the same day.[34] Within hours of the release, the album topped various physical and digital sales charts in South Korea.[35] The songs on the album "were more carefully selected than ever", and the album is said to "[give] listeners a great chance to experience the diverse musical characters and more mature vocal skills of the members."[36] The group made their comeback on July 23, 2010 at KBS Music Bank.[33] Choreography of "Lucifer" was released on the same YouTube channel on August 3, 2010.[37] The studio album was re-released as a repackaged version, entitled Hello, on October 1, 2010. The music video of the promotional single, also named "Hello", was released on October 4, 2010. The re-released version included three new tracks.
Amidst their promotional activities for the second studio album, the group also participated in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour alongside their label-mates. On August 21, 2010, they performed in a concert at Seoul Olympic Stadium in Seoul.[38] On September 4, 2010, they also performed at a concert at Staples Center in Los Angeles.[39] Later, on September 11, 2010, Shinee also participated in a concert at Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai.[40]
On December 26, 2010, Shinee started their Shinee The 1st Concert "Shinee World" concert tour, by holdingtheir first concert at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo. The event was attended by a total audience of approximately 24,000 attendees. The group also announced that they will be releasing their first Japanese language studio release in 2011 under EMI Music Japan, a record label known for the success of their famous Japanese-American singer-songwriter Hikaru Utada.[3]
[edit] 2011: Japanese debut and The First
On January 1, 2011, Shinee performed a concert at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul as a part of their tour, Shinee World. On January 2, 2011, before their repeat performance of their concert in Seoul, Shinee held a press conference. The group answered many questions related to their future plans; announcing that in March 2011 they will be debuting in Japan. The members also reflected on their successed of 2010. The concert then continued at Taipei, Nanjing, Singapore, Nagoya, and Osaka throughout 2011. On January 25 and 26, 2011, the group participated in the Japan leg of SMTown Live '10 World Tour alongside their fellow labelmates at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo which also continued in two concerts in Paris at Zenith de Paris, three concerts in Tokyo at Tokyo Dome and at Madison Square Garden in New York City.[41][42]
On May 16, 2011, EMI Music Japan revealed a teaser for the Japanese version of "Replay" through their official YouTube channel. The music video was released through the same channel on May 27, 2011.[43] The single was released in Japan on June 22, 2011 and sold more than 91,000 copies in the first week. It was certified 'Gold' by RIAJ for selling over 100,000 copies in June 2011.[44]
On June 19, 2011, Shinee had their Japan Debut Premium Reception in London at the Abbey Road Studios. Their showcase was exclusive only to 130 selected people, most of which were from the press.On July 22, 2011, Shinee started their Japan Debut Premium Reception Tour. They performed at a number of concerts while touring various cities across Japan including Fukuoka on July 22, Kobe on July 23, Tokyo on July 27 and 28, Sapporo on August 8 and Nagoya on August 11, 2011.
On August 8, 2011, EMI Music Japan revealed the music video for the Japanese version of "Juliette" through their official YouTube channel.[45] The single was released in Japan on August 28, 2011. On October 12, 2011, the group again released their third Japanese single "Lucifer" after the official music video for the single was released on EMI Music Japan's official YouTube channel on September 15, 2011.[46] It was announced on Oricon's website that Shinee was the first foreign artist in the 44 year long history of Oricon ever to have three different singles released in Japan and all three of which ranked in top three on their weekly singles sales chart. These singles were their first three Japanese singles: "Replay", "Juliette" and "Lucifer".[47]
On October 17, 2011, it was announced by EMI Music Japan that Shinee will be releasing their first Japanese studio album, The First on November 23, 2011.[48] However, the Japanese release date has now been delayed to December 7, 2011. The album will feature five new songs in addition to Japanese remakes of seven previously released Korean songs. The regular version of the album will also feature the theme song of the drama Stranger 6, a track called "Stranger" as a bonus.[49]
The group was invited to be the opening act of The 6th London Korean Film Festival which took place at Odeon West End Theater on November 3, 2011.[50] They also performed in their hour-long gala concert Shinee in London, the tickets for which sold out within a minute after going on sale at 1:00 pm on the October 27, 2011.[51] This also marked the first time that any Korean artist(s) had held an independent concert in London.
On November 18, 2011, It was announced Onew, Key, and Taemin would release book about their travels in Barcelona, Spain, becoming the first Korean idols to ever author a "vacation guide". They created a collection of their travels and titled their guide, Son of the Sun. The book was released on December 8, 2011.[52] Shinee participated in 2011 Winter SMTown – The Warmest Gift album with the song "Last Christmas". The compilation album by SM artists was released on December 13, 2011.[53]
Shinee held a commemorative live concert in honor of the successful release of their first Japanese album, The First, at the Tokyo International Forum Hall A on December 24, 2011. The live concert took place three times in order to accommodate the 15,000 fans that won a lottery to attend. They performed a total of six songs including their Japanese debut single, Replay (Kimi wa Boku no Everything) and Lucifer, as well as a new song in their album called To Your Heart.[54] On December 28, 2011 Tower Records Japan announced that Shinee had won the 'Artist of the Year' award at the K-Pop Lovers! Awards 2011, beating out other K-Pop groups for the award.[55]
[edit] 2012–present: Sherlock and Shinee World 2012 arena tour
On January 1, 2012 Professor Kim Nando of the best selling novel, "It Hurts Because It's the Youth" and also a professor of Domestic Science at Seoul University has revealed that he is penning the lyrics for Shinee‘s comeback album. The professor wrote on his Twitter that "I’m currently ripping my hair out over writing the lyrics for SHINee’s new song."[56]
Cosmetics brand Etude House released a video clip featuring Shinee as their endorsement models on January 17, 2012. In the video Shinee perform a song endorsing Etude House's new skin care line, Skin Malgami.[57][58]
Shinee made their Korean comeback a year and six months after the release of Hello, with the announcement of their fourth mini album, entitled Sherlock. The title song "Sherlock (Clue + Note)" is a hybrid remix and choreographed by Tony Testa. The digital version of the album, was released online through various online music sources, such as Korean music portals and iTunes, on March 19, 2012.[59] After the album was released, their title song “Sherlock” reached #1 on various music charts. Shinee also gained a lot of attention in global music charts, such as in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and France, and achieved 8th place on the iTunes Top Albums chart. They also reached 1st position on the Japanese, 6th on the Swedish, 9th on the Canadian, and 10th on the Mexican iTunes Chart.[60]
The physical copies of the Sherlock album was released on March 21, 2012 in South Korea. On March 22, 2012 Shinee's music video for their title song "Sherlock" was released on SM Entertainment's YouTube channel.[61] On 27 March, 2012, "Sherlock" was the #1 song on Show Champion.[62] A few days later, Shinee received the #1 award for the same single on M! Countdown and Inkigayo.[63]
On March 26, 2012, Shinee alongside their labelmates, became stockholders of SM Entertainment. Which would enable them to participate in the company’s vision and growth. They will be receiving 340 shares each (value of around $13,600 for each member).[64]
On April 25, 2012, EMI Music Japan revealed the music video for the Japanese version of "Sherlock" through their official YouTube channel.[65] The single was released in Japan on May 16, 2012.[66]
Shinee have started their first Japan nationwide concert tour titled "Shinee World 2012" on April 25, 2012. The tour will take a total of 20 concerts in Fukuoka, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Tokyo and Hiroshima, would be held over a period of two months.[67] [68] This tour is expected to attract approximately 250,000 people in the audience and the ticket sales are estimated to bring in around 30.7 billion won ($26.9 million) for the Korean boy band.[69] [70] On May 20, 2012, Shinee participated in the SMTown Live World Tour III alongside their label-mates at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.[71]
Shinee is known for their fashion style, created by designer Ha Sang Baek (하상백), which features high-top sneakers, skinny jeans and colorful sweaters.[32] Their style has created a fashion trend amongst students which the media dubbed the "SHINee Trend".[2]
