Thiruthangal * 45 th Divya Desam / Marriage isthala ~
It is said to be one legend that in 'Thiruparkadal' (
Milky ocean),the abode of lord
Vishnu, there had been a healthy competition between the consorts of lord Vishnu, namely
Sri Devi,
Boo Devi and
Neela Devi that who would be the best
among them. The supporters of each one of the groups had emphasized their part as the prime out of the rest with many descriptions. The supporters of Sri Devi (Maha
Lakshmi) said that as Sri Devi had been placed within the chest of
lord Vishnu,She had been ranked as no.1.
Again they had argued that she had been the goddess of wealth, which is said to be the essence of life in the earth and hence they were right at all.
The supporters of Boo Devi (goddess of earth) had argued that She had been the carrier of all the lives in earth and added that lord Vishnu,
for Her only, had taken the incarnation(
Avatar) of 'Varagha' (wild boar), in order to get back the earth (her) from the 'Pathala
Loga' (
Nether world). So they put forth their part as Boo Devi had been the best. The supporters of Neela Devi had argued that as She had been in the form of water, she proved as the key factor of lives in earth, not only, but also lord Vishnu resided on her (milky ocean) at His abode.Vishnu has also been called as '
Narayanan',followed by the term called 'Narini',which also belonged to Neela Devi.
Having held the responsibility of proving Her self as the supreme, Maha Lakshmi left for a place called as 'Thangal' on earth. There She had been on severe penance towards Vishnu. Having accomplished in Her
Penance,Vishnu appeared before Her and had acknowledged that She had been the best among His consorts. As here,Maha Lakshmi had come and resided, that place 'Thangal' had transformed as '
Thiruthangal'.There had been one more legend regarding the reason for naming as Thiruthangal. We will find here
...
Once upon, there had been a vital competition in between a '
Ala maram' (
Banyan tree),resided at the
Island of 'Swetham' with the 'Athishesan',the five head serpant, which is said to be the celestial bed for lord Vishnu. Both of them went for the judgement in front of lord Brahmah and He gave the judgement that as Athishesan had engaged himself as the bed for lord Vishnu allways,he could have been considered as the strongest and also He added that lord Vishnu,how-
ever, olny once slept as a child on the 'Banyan-leaf' at the time of deluge. So,Brahmah had declared that Athishesan had been the strongest.
The Banyan tree, after having heard the judgement from Brahmah, became very sad enough to do severe penance towards Vishnu in order to get a good recognition from Vishnu.Having accomplished it's target, it had been blessed with
the boon that it could transform as a hillock, where goddess Maha Lakshmi had done Her penance.
Lord Vishnu also added that He would reside on that hillock permanently, when the time would have to come. As per the word had Vishnu given to the Banyan tree, He stood as in the name of '
Nindra Narayana
Perumal', in standing posture, there in Thiruthangal. So it's been called as 'Thangu+Ala+
Malai = Thangala malai. In
Tamil,'Thangu' means reside and 'Ala'
denotes 'Ala maram', that is Banyan tree.
There had been one more legend, related to this isthla with the '
Krishna Avatar'.
Let's see ... ... ... !
Krishna, one of the incarnations of lord Vishnu, had arranged the marriage of his grandson Aniruthan' with the duughter of the demon Panasuran, named Ushai, here in Thiruthangal under the presence of goddess Maha Lakshmi. Before the marriage had happened,Aniruthan had been abducted by Chithralegai, who was the friend of Ushai,as per the wish of Ushai, as she had been very fond of Aniruthan. But the demon Panasu-
ran mis understood that Aniruthan had entered the harem without the permission of his daughter Ushai and hence he imprisoned Aniruthan with the divine weapon called as 'Nagasthiram'. Krishna, having known this, invaded to Sonitha-
puram, which had been the capital of Panasuran. Krishna killed the demon Panasuran.
Krishna accompanied with Aniruthan and Ushai had reached Thiruthangal. It has been said that goddess Maha Lakshmi,in the 'Avatar-name' of Senkamala Nachiyar had wedlocked Aniruthan with Ushai. So this isthala is said to be the one
that could finish the late-marriage into fruitful. Here one could come and pray for their marriage, should give the saree of having got '9 gajam' as the offering to thayaar Senkamala Nachiyar, after they have been wedlocked.
