The Lamido of Adamawa yesterday responded to what he considered attempts to blackmail northerners at the National Conference, saying people like him are not afraid of Nigeria's disintegration.
In a rare public outburst by a senior traditional ruler, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha spoke in the wake of the stalemate over modality of voting which split delegates along regional lines.
"If something happens and the country disintegrates, God forbids, many of those who are shouting their heads off will have nowhere to go," he said.
"But I and the people of Adamawa and many others have got somewhere to go. I am the Lamido of Adamawa and my kingdom transcends Nigeria and Cameroon. The larger part of my kingdom is in the Republic of Cameroun and a part of that kingdom is in Chad Republic."
He added: "Mr Chairman, a part of that kingdom, in Cameroun there is a state called Adamawa presently in Cameroon. So, if I run to that place, I will easily assimilate".
Mustapha is one of the 13 delegates representing the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. He spoke at the plenary session of the conference after making a written special request to the chairman to be allowed to speak over the behavior of some delegates so far.
In the long-drawn dispute over voting modality, southerners wanted decisions to be approved by a two-thirds majority, while northerners demanded either consensus or a 75 per cent majority, as provided in the Federal Government's guidelines for the conference.
This has caused an acrimonious debate over three days, with delegates from the opposing camps nearly coming to blows on Tuesday.
The Adamawa Emir said yesterday the mode of voting had already been settled by President Jonathan, and "I want to plead for us to strictly thread the part laid down by Mr President in his address which includes pattern of voting unless we want to disobey our president, then you can do whatever you want."
Jonathan's inauguration speech last week advocated consensus by delegates in taking decisions.
Mustapha said the people causing most of the problems in Nigeria are the people who have no place to go should the country disintegrate.
He warned that if such behavior continued, he would walk out along with like-minded people.
"And if we are pushed to the wall, we will easily walk out of this conference," he said.
"And Mr Chairman, jingoism is not a monopoly of anyone. Everyone here is a potential jingoist," the Lamido said.
"Mr Chairman, I just want to sound a note of warning; that is why I requested to be allowed to speak before the start of business today. I have been sitting here for three days watching, listening. I attempted twice to speak but I wasn't given the chance.
"So, the note of warning I want to sound is that we shouldn't take cue from the so-called civilised people of the western countries because they are always after their own interest and they could use anything, coercive, force and other means to protect that interest."
He added: "Mr Chairman, this lead to the debate on the behaviour of some of the delegates here. It clearly beats my imagination on how a gathering of people like us will behave the way we are behaving.
"Mr President delivered his address here and laid down what we are supposed to discuss and what not to discuss but many people here, sorry to say that, some elder statesmen who claim to be staunch loyalists of the president, but unfortunately these people are in the forefront to contradict what the president said in his address.
"He said that at the rate we are going, in the long run, if we are not careful, this conference will flop, God forbid and if it flops, the resultant effect cannot be imagined by any of us here."
The monarch's remarks elicited anger from many delegates, but that did not stop him from continuing with his comments.
When the murmuring became loud, a delegate went to the Lamido and pleaded with him to calm down, and subsequently took the microphone from him.
The conference session ended yesterday without breaking the deadlock over voting modality. A committee of 50 leaders has now been appointed to discuss and come up with an acceptable way out.

EXCERPTS:
Five years ago, I embarked on a mission of ancestral rediscovery. It took me to Ajase-po in Kwara State. It was a mini imitation of the self-rediscovery exploits of Alex Haley in Roots. You recall the book, don't you? I'm not convinced I should take this for granted. The book was published in 1976 and was a rave for many years-long enough for members of my generation to get familiar with it. I don't think I can safely assume same for majority of Nigerians (40 years and below) who may be precluded by two factors. First, those born in 1974 upwards are not likely intellectually curious enough before 1990 when the book's popularity would have considerably waned. Second is the general belief that the reading culture in Nigeria has been on a steady decline since if not before 1990.
Well then Roots is an autobiographical account of Haley's family and ancestral lineage dating back two centuries to Kunta Kinte who originated in Gambia, West Africa and was sold into slavery in the latter half of the 18th century. An African-American, Haley died in 1992. Nearer home was Olaudah Equaino who was born in Nsukka in 1745 and died as a freed slave in London 52 years after. He wrote his life experience in a book titled 'the interesting narrative of the life of Olaudah Equaino', which I believe is a prescribed African-writers series text for pre-college African students.
My personal history begins to diverge from that of Haley in the important respect that my immigrant ancestor, also about six generations removed, was lucky enough to be spared the ordeal of enslavement and the traumatic voyage across two oceans. I started my own journey of rediscovery from my family cognomen-oriki-a snap oral rendition of rarefied family history. It was as revealing and straightforward as telling me that I'm from a warrior prince clan which originated from the Adeoba ruling house in Ajase-po. From our present abode at Okemesi, an immigrant settlement town in Ekiti State, I simply went to Ajase to reclaim this heritage in 2009. And what an odyssey it turned out to be.
To my pleasant surprise I learnt, amongst other beguiling revelations, that my centuries old cousins founded the settler city of Porto Novo-the administrative capital of Benin Republic. The indigenous name of Porto Novo is Ajasse-po.
If I were privileged to be a delegate at the National Conference in Abuja, I would have called the bluff of the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha with this personal history and let him know he cannot pull rank on me. After all, I can lay claim to being a prince just like him; and if his kingdom straddles Nigeria and Cameroun, so does mine straddle Nigeria and Benin Republic. I have not been able to verify the colour of his blood but mine was royal blue the last time I checked! Even if they are not royalists like me and Lamido, I'm certain that most Nigerians share a similar family heritage of far flung cross border migration. But don't let me assume that all our readers are acquainted with the Lamido's royal disclosure at the ongoing National Conference where he is a delegate.

SHARON, Mass. (AP) -- A Foxborough teenager whose battle with a rare genetic condition that accelerates the aging process inspired professional athletes and spurred medical research is being laid to rest.
A funeral for 17-year-old Sam Berns is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Temple Israel in Sharon.
Berns died Friday of complications from Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, commonly known as progeria. The Progeria Research Foundation was founded by his parents.
Berns was diagnosed with progeria when he was 22 months old. His parents founded the nonprofit foundation after encountering a lack of information and research on the condition.
Berns became the subject of an HBO documentary, -Life According to Sam.- The exposure has brought greater recognition to the condition, which causes musculoskeletal degeneration, cardiovascular problems and other symptoms associated with aging. The Lamido of Adamawa yesterday responded to what he considered attempts to blackmail northerners at the National Conference, saying people like him are not afraid of Nigeria's disintegration.
In a rare public outburst by a senior traditional ruler, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha spoke in the wake of the stalemate over modality of voting which split delegates along regional lines.
"If something happens and the country disintegrates, God forbids, many of those who are shouting their heads off will have nowhere to go," he said.
"But I and the people of Adamawa and many others have got somewhere to go. I am the Lamido of Adamawa and my kingdom transcends Nigeria and Cameroon. The larger part of my kingdom is in the Republic of Cameroun and a part of that kingdom is in Chad Republic."
He added: "Mr Chairman, a part of that kingdom, in Cameroun there is a state called Adamawa presently in Cameroon. So, if I run to that place, I will easily assimilate".
Mustapha is one of the 13 delegates representing the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. He spoke at the plenary session of the conference after making a written special request to the chairman to be allowed to speak over the behavior of some delegates so far.
In the long-drawn dispute over voting modality, southerners wanted decisions to be approved by a two-thirds majority, while northerners demanded either consensus or a 75 per cent majority, as provided in the Federal Government's guidelines for the conference.
This has caused an acrimonious debate over three days, with delegates from the opposing camps nearly coming to blows on Tuesday.
The Adamawa Emir said yesterday the mode of voting had already been settled by President Jonathan, and "I want to plead for us to strictly thread the part laid down by Mr President in his address which includes pattern of voting unless we want to disobey our president, then you can do whatever you want."
Jonathan's inauguration speech last week advocated consensus by delegates in taking decisions.
Mustapha said the people causing most of the problems in Nigeria are the people who have no place to go should the country disintegrate.
He warned that if such behavior continued, he would walk out along with like-minded people.
"And if we are pushed to the wall, we will easily walk out of this conference," he said.
"And Mr Chairman, jingoism is not a monopoly of anyone. Everyone here is a potential jingoist," the Lamido said.
"Mr Chairman, I just want to sound a note of warning; that is why I requested to be allowed to speak before the start of business today. I have been sitting here for three days watching, listening. I attempted twice to speak but I wasn't given the chance.
"So, the note of warning I want to sound is that we shouldn't take cue from the so-called civilised people of the western countries because they are always after their own interest and they could use anything, coercive, force and other means to protect that interest."
He added: "Mr Chairman, this lead to the debate on the behaviour of some of the delegates here. It clearly beats my imagination on how a gathering of people like us will behave the way we are behaving.
"Mr President delivered his address here and laid down what we are supposed to discuss and what not to discuss but many people here, sorry to say that, some elder statesmen who claim to be staunch loyalists of the president, but unfortunately these people are in the forefront to contradict what the president said in his address.
"He said that at the rate we are going, in the long run, if we are not careful, this conference will flop, God forbid and if it flops, the resultant effect cannot be imagined by any of us here."
The monarch's remarks elicited anger from many delegates, but that did not stop him from continuing with his comments.
When the murmuring became loud, a delegate went to the Lamido and pleaded with him to calm down, and subsequently took the microphone from him.
The conference session ended yesterday without breaking the deadlock over voting modality. A committee of 50 leaders has now been appointed to discuss and come up with an acceptable way out.

The Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha, a delegate at the ongoing conference in Abuja, in this interview with the BBC Hausa, monitored in Kaduna by Regional Editor, North-West, HASSAN IBRAHIM, says the comments he made on the floor of the conference, which triggered mixed public reactions, were warnings. EXCERPTS:
Five years ago, I embarked on a mission of ancestral rediscovery. It took me to Ajase-po in Kwara State. It was a mini imitation of the self-rediscovery exploits of Alex Haley in Roots. You recall the book, don't you? I'm not convinced I should take this for granted. The book was published in 1976 and was a rave for many years-long enough for members of my generation to get familiar with it. I don't think I can safely assume same for majority of Nigerians (40 years and below) who may be precluded by two factors. First, those born in 1974 upwards are not likely intellectually curious enough before 1990 when the book's popularity would have considerably waned. Second is the general belief that the reading culture in Nigeria has been on a steady decline since if not before 1990.
Well then Roots is an autobiographical account of Haley's family and ancestral lineage dating back two centuries to Kunta Kinte who originated in Gambia, West Africa and was sold into slavery in the latter half of the 18th century. An African-American, Haley died in 1992. Nearer home was Olaudah Equaino who was born in Nsukka in 1745 and died as a freed slave in London 52 years after. He wrote his life experience in a book titled 'the interesting narrative of the life of Olaudah Equaino', which I believe is a prescribed African-writers series text for pre-college African students.
My personal history begins to diverge from that of Haley in the important respect that my immigrant ancestor, also about six generations removed, was lucky enough to be spared the ordeal of enslavement and the traumatic voyage across two oceans. I started my own journey of rediscovery from my family cognomen-oriki-a snap oral rendition of rarefied family history. It was as revealing and straightforward as telling me that I'm from a warrior prince clan which originated from the Adeoba ruling house in Ajase-po. From our present abode at Okemesi, an immigrant settlement town in Ekiti State, I simply went to Ajase to reclaim this heritage in 2009. And what an odyssey it turned out to be.
To my pleasant surprise I learnt, amongst other beguiling revelations, that my centuries old cousins founded the settler city of Porto Novo-the administrative capital of Benin Republic. The indigenous name of Porto Novo is Ajasse-po.
If I were privileged to be a delegate at the National Conference in Abuja, I would have called the bluff of the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha with this personal history and let him know he cannot pull rank on me. After all, I can lay claim to being a prince just like him; and if his kingdom straddles Nigeria and Cameroun, so does mine straddle Nigeria and Benin Republic. I have not been able to verify the colour of his blood but mine was royal blue the last time I checked! Even if they are not royalists like me and Lamido, I'm certain that most Nigerians share a similar family heritage of far flung cross border migration. But don't let me assume that all our readers are acquainted with the Lamido's royal disclosure at the ongoing National Conference where he is a delegate.

SHARON, Mass. (AP) -- A Foxborough teenager whose battle with a rare genetic condition that accelerates the aging process inspired professional athletes and spurred medical research is being laid to rest.
A funeral for 17-year-old Sam Berns is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Temple Israel in Sharon.
Berns died Friday of complications from Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, commonly known as progeria. The Progeria Research Foundation was founded by his parents.
Berns was diagnosed with progeria when he was 22 months old. His parents founded the nonprofit foundation after encountering a lack of information and research on the condition.
Berns became the subject of an HBO documentary, -Life According to Sam.- The exposure has brought greater recognition to the condition, which causes musculoskeletal degeneration, cardiovascular problems and other symptoms associated with aging. Experts have pointed out that most people think in the language of their mother land, and that when they speak other languages of no identical parameters to their ethnicity they engaged in transliteration and endless hurdles before the main issues at hand.
Language is a means by which words or expressions find meaning and is put into use. Basically, it is used as a means of giving out information, thoughts, skills, ideas, reasoning and ensures receipt of same from varied sources without. Above all, language is knowledge, and knowledge is POWER to the people, from the people and by the people.
The Guosa Language:
There are about 400 different ethnic languages, dialects and fractional tongues in Nigeria and about twice this number in other West African countries. The Guosa Language alone had in its evolution at least 120 of these divers tongues beginning with a pair in evolution. The language is made up of carefully detailed units of the different ethnic languages and cultures, so that in the future years, Nigeria and the West African Regional Countries should be able to take their positive stand in the communities of lingua franca nations of the world, such as the East Africa, the North Africa, Europe, America, Asia and so on.

Lack of this essential vehicle of unity and identity did not only destabilize and destroy the socio-political and industrial strategies of the West African countries; it raised data or questions which borders on the basis for cohesion, comprehension, industrial and technological revolution and the unity in such diversity because language plays a unifying role in the beginning, development, beliefs, and customs of any group of people.
