Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (German: [ˈvɔlfɡaŋ amaˈdeːʊs ˈmoːtsaʁt], English see fn.; 27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), baptised as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty.
At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons.
Diana Damrau (born 31 May 1971) is a German soprano opera singer. She is a Kammersängerin of the Bavarian State Opera.
Damrau was born in 1971 in Günzburg, Bavaria, Germany, and began her operatic studies with Carmen Hanganu at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. During her studies, she developed an edema on a vocal fold. After consulting with several doctors, she decided to undergo an alternative therapy without surgery. The treatment lasted about one and a half years. After graduating from music conservatory she worked in Salzburg with Hanna Ludwig.
Her first operatic engagements were in Würzburg and subsequently the National Theatre Mannheim and Oper Frankfurt. Since then, she has sung throughout the world at venues such as the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Royal Opera House London, the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. She was invited to sing the title role in Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta at the re-opening of La Scala, Milan in 2004, under the baton of Riccardo Muti.

For the past 38 years, the Richard Tucker Award has been granted to an American singer poised on the edge of a major national and international career, with a list of winners that reads like a who's who of American opera stars. This year's winner, soprano Tamara Wilson, was hailed by The New York Times upon her Metropolitan Opera debut as "a young American who sings Verdi with a passion that surpasses stereotype." Her wide repertoire encompasses Verdi, Mozart, Strauss and Wagner roles and Ms. Wilson will make debuts this season at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper Berlin and return to Barcelona's Liceu, all in leading Verdi roles, as well as singing Britten, Wagner, Mahler and Strauss in concerts with leading orchestras. At this celebration at The Greene Space at WQXR...

DiscMuseum presents a comparison of four interpretations of the Queen of the Night’s Aria from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute. This aria poignantly and dramatically captures the character’s fury. Here is the English translation of the aria: Vengeance rages in my heart; the flames of death and despair surround me; If you do not cause Sarastro to die a painful death; If he does not die by your hand; you are no longer my daughter; If ...
