Meuse
The Meuse (/ˈmjuːz/; French: la Meuse IPA: [møz]; Walloon: Mouze IPA: [muːs]) or Maas (Dutch: Maas; IPA: [ˈmaːs]) is a major European river, rising in France and flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands before draining into the North Sea. It has a total length of 925 km (575 mi).
History
From 1301 the upper Meuse roughly marked the western border of the Holy Roman Empire with the Kingdom of France, after Count Henry III of Bar had to receive the western part of the County of Bar (Barrois mouvant) as a French fief from the hands of King Philip IV. The border remained stable until the annexation of the Three Bishoprics Metz, Toul and Verdun by King Henry II in 1552 and the occupation of the Duchy of Lorraine by the forces of King Louis XIII in 1633. Its lower Belgian (Walloon) portion, part of the sillon industriel, was the first fully industrialized area in continental Europe. The Meuse and its crossings were a key objective of the last major German WWII counter-offensive on the Western Front, the Battle of the Bulge (Battle of the Ardennes) in the winter of 1944/45.

Meuse (department)
Meuse (French pronunciation: [møz]) is a department in northeast France, named after the River Meuse. Meuse is part of the current region of Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine and is surrounded by the French departments of Ardennes, Marne, Haute-Marne, Vosges, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and has a short border with Belgium on the north. Parts of Meuse belong to Parc naturel régional de Lorraine. Front lines in trench warfare during World War I ran varying courses through the department and it hosted an important battle/offensive in 1916 in and around Verdun.
History
Meuse is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790, by order of the National Constituent Assembly. The new departments were to be uniformly administered and approximately equal to one another in size and population. The department was created from the former provinces of Barrois (area of Bar-le-Duc) and Three Bishoprics (area of Verdun).
From about 500 AD, the Franks controlled this part of northeastern France, and the Carolingian Empire was the last stage of their rule. The Carolingian territories were divided into three sections in 843 at the Treaty of Verdun, and the area that is now the department of Meuse, became part of Middle Francia. The new ruler was Lothair I, and on his death in 855, his territory north of the Alps was passed to his second son Lothair II, after whom the hitherto nameless territory was called Lotharingia, which name eventually evolved into the modern Lorraine. Lothair II died without legitimate heirs and Lotharingia was divided into an east and west part. The king of East Francia, Louis the German, received the eastern part and Charles the Bald, king of West Francia, received the western part, which included Meuse, thus effectively establishing the medieval Kingdoms of Germany and France.

The poem was written in 1870 by Paul Cezano, in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War and the first days of the French Third Republic. The music was composed by Robert Planquette and was arranged as a military march by Joseph François Rauski in In 1879.

Designed for the visitor center at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, this film presents visitors with an immersive, World War I experience. Scenes include the realities of trench warfare, the brutality of hand-to-hand combat, the effects of poison gas, the limited availability of medical care, and the celebration of the Armistice. The film blends historic footage against this portrayal of the battlefield experience.

On the river Meuse is a lot of boat traffic. Every day again the skippers and boatman transport their goods.

SHOTS: Hay is unloaded at La Cheppe from railroad cars. 6th Marines march through Sommerance. The 4th Machine Gun Bn. eats breakfast, 3rd Div. troops move into Ippecourt. German shells burst in Nantillois. Gens. Hale, Brown, Richardson, and Sladen attend decoration ceremonies. 16th F. A. units pass through Cuisy and Malancourt. 58th and 77th F.A. units advance; the 77th F.A. fires guns. 39th and 58th Inf. troops advance under fire.

Le Régiment de Sambre et Meuse (Sambre-et-Meuse regiment") is a song and military march by Robert Planquette and Paul Cezano.
The poem was written in 1870 by Paul Cezano, in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War and the first days of the French Third Republic. The music was composed by Robert Planquette and was arranged as a military march by Joseph François Rauski in In 1879.
Lyrics:
1. Tous ces fiers soldats de la Gaule
Allaient sans trêve et sans repos
Avec leur fusil sur l'épaule
Courage au cœur et sac au dos,
La gloire était leur nourriture.
Ils étaient sans pain, sans souliers,
La nuit ils couchaient sur la dure
Avec leur sac pour oreiller.

Au cri de liberté

The "Régiment de Sambre-et-Meuse" is a French patriotic song composed in 1870 by Robert Planquette and arranged in military march by François-Joseph Rauski. The lyrics were written by Paul Cézano. The poem was written after the French military defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. It evokes in a martial tone the army of Sambre-et-Meuse formed following the French victory of Fleurus in 1794 over the Austrians in what is now Belgium. The area where the battle took place will become the department of Sambre-et-Meuse, which met in France from 1795 to 1814.
Le "Régiment de Sambre-et-Meuse" est un chant patriotique français composé en 1870 par Robert Planquette et arrangé en marche militaire par François-Joseph Rauski. Les paroles ont été écrites par Paul Cézano. Le poème a été écrit après la défaite militaire française dans la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870. Il évoque sur un ton martial l’armée de Sambre-et-Meuse formée suite à la victoire française de Fleurus en 1794 sur les Autrichiens dans ce qui est maintenant la Belgique. La région où la bataille a eu lieu deviendra le département de Sambre-et-Meuse, qui s’est réuni en France de 1795 à 1814.
