Buffalo Creek may refer to:
The Buffalo Creek flood was a disaster that occurred on February 26, 1972, when the Pittston Coal Company's coal slurry impoundment dam #3, located on a hillside in Logan County, West Virginia, burst, four days after having been declared 'satisfactory' by a federal mine inspector.
The resulting flood unleashed approximately 132,000,000 US gallons (500,000 m3) of black waste water, cresting over 30 ft high, upon the residents of 16 coal towns along Buffalo Creek Hollow. Out of a population of 5,000 people, 125 were killed, 1,121 were injured, and over 4,000 were left homeless. 507 houses were destroyed, in addition to forty-four mobile homes and 30 businesses. The disaster destroyed or damaged homes in Saunders, Pardee, Lorado, Craneco, Lundale, Stowe, Crites, Latrobe, Robinette, Amherstdale, Becco, Fanco, Braeholm, Accoville, Crown and Kistler. In its legal filings, Pittston Coal referred to the accident as "an Act of God."
Dam #3, constructed of coarse mining refuse dumped into the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek starting in 1968, failed first, following heavy rains. The water from Dam #3 then overwhelmed Dams #2 and #1. Dam #3 had been built on top of coal slurry sediment that had collected behind dams # 1 and #2, instead of on solid bedrock. Dam #3 was approximately 260 feet above the town of Saunders when it failed.

PALMETTO, FLORIDA — Charles Helms and his friend were golfing at Buffalo Creek Golf Course earlier this week when they spotted a reptile moseying around the course that made them drop their clubs in awe. Believed to be an American alligator, the massive beast began walking through the course mere yards away from them. The pair estimate the gator must have been roughly 15-feet in length. It was such a shocking site to take in, Helms can be heard on camera saying, “I think that’s two guys in an alligator suit.” Helms posted the video to Facebook on May 25. The men tried to get as close to the alligator as possible to show just how huge it was. While it’s an eye-opening sight to most, the staff at the golf course claim the reptile’s been around for a long time, and doesn’t disturb the p...

A sample from the award-winning 1975 Appalshop film "The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man." On Feb. 26, 1972, a coal waste dam owned by the Pittston Company collapsed at the head of a crowded hollow in southern West Virginia. A wall of sludge, debris, and water tore through the valley below, leaving in its wake 125 dead and 4000 homeless. The Pittston Company, owners of the dam, denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the disaster was 'an act of God'. Interviews with survivors, representatives of union and citizen's groups, and company officials are juxtaposed with actual footage of the flood and scenes of the ensuing devastation. A film by Mimi Pickering.

Buffalo Creek Flood 41 Years Later - Video project by Man High School's Environmental Science Class with pictures pulled from internet resources along with Craig Heath's Buffalo Creek 1972 song used with his permission. Those who were interviewed by the students are survivors of the Buffalo Creek Flood and are greatly appreciated for sharing their memories of such a life-altering, tragic event. As a class, the students and their teacher, Mr. Billy Dickerson (who is also a survivor), compiled these memories to be added to those that are currently available at the Buffalo Creek Library in South Man, WV. Thank you to all who contributed to the compilation of this video . . . may we never forget.
Camping is a treasured part of the American tradition and it gives man a chance to reconnect with nature and his surroundings. My family loves camping and we had a great time exploring this area. The official campground wasn't our type of style so we found a site nearby. The Buffalo Creek area is really nice with plenty trees rock formations to keep your attention. Overall we had a great time and gearing up for the next outing! Please COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE & WATCH my other videos! Looking forward to hearing from you and answering your questions. Over the last two years a small group of volunteers of the Western New York Railway Historical Society have worked to get Buffalo Creek ALCO HH660 #43 running again. It was last run in the summer of 1999 by a chemical company in Georgia. When the WNYRHS took ownership in 2000, we found it had minimal maintenance and many modifications to keep it running. Over the last ten years, our small team has brought the engine back as close as possible to its as built configuration. We still have more work to do but reaching this milestone has made all our efforts worth while. To follow the whole story of #43's transformation please click on the link below.
