The Jim Reeves story started in Panola County, Texas, in August 1923 and ended when he died in a plane crash on 31st July 1964 – yet even today, half a century later, he is still a legend. The Country Music Hall of Fame, to which he was elected posthumously in 1967, made the following citation: 'The velvet style of "Gentleman Jim Reeves" was an international influence. His rich voice bought millions of new fans to country music from every corner of the world…Posterity will keep his name alive because they will remember him as one of country music's most important performers.'

James Travis "Jim" Reeves (August 20, 1923 – July 31, 1964) was an American country and popular music singer-songwriter. With records charting from the 1950s to the 1980s, he became well known as a practitioner of the Nashville sound (a mixture of older country-style music with elements of popular music). Known as Gentleman Jim, his songs continued to chart for years after his death. Reeves died at age 40 in the crash of a private airplane. He is a member of both the Country Music and Texas Country Music Halls of Fame.
Reeves was born in Galloway, Texas, a small rural community near Carthage. Winning an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas, he enrolled to study speech and drama, but quit after only six weeks to work in the shipyards in Houston. Soon he resumed baseball, playing in the semi-professional leagues before contracting with the St. Louis Cardinals "farm" team during 1944 as a right-handed pitcher. He played for the minor leagues for three years before severing his sciatic nerve while pitching, which ended his athletic career.[citation needed]

Plot: After the death of their mother, Jane Terrell agrees to stay home and do the housework, while her little sister Bessie attends school. When the new schoolmaster arrives he comes to their home to board and admiring Jane's kindness, determines to give her lessons at home. Both girls learn to admire and then to love the handsome teacher and when Bessie sees that his evenings are all given to Jane she resents it, and confesses to her sister that she loves him. Jane sacrifices herself, discontinues her lessons and avoids the teacher. He is at a lost to understand her actions, for he has become deeply interested in her, while he looks upon Bessie as an interesting child. This was the condition when Jim Reeves, a salesman, stopped at the farm. Soon Bessie is more interested in him than she is in Jack Redmond. And then one night Bessie runs away to the city with him, leaving behind a note. One morning Jane finds her little sister near the door. She sobs out the miserable story to Jane of betrayal and desertion. Jack Redmond finds them and when he learns the truth swears to track down the salesman and force him to make retribution. Fearing the father's wrath, they conceal Bessie in the barn and the schoolmaster hurries to the city. Jack finds the girl's betrayer and asks him to come with him. Reeves is defiant until Jack shows him that the suspicious-looking bulge in his pocket is a revolver trained on him and he is forced to go with Jack to a justice of the peace. The three of them return to the farm and under the tree Jim had met little Bessie the justice performed the ceremony. Jack tells him to be gone and never come back. But with a newly awakened manhood he decides to live with the little girl, of whose innocence he had taken advantage, and together they go to the father. When Bessie shows him she is married the father forgives them and takes Bessie back into his heart. And out under the tree another romance reaches its culmination, for Jack and Jane reach a perfect understanding at last.

The Jim Reeves story started in Panola County, Texas, in August 1923 and ended when he died in a plane crash on 31st July 1964 – yet even today, half a century later, he is still a legend. The Country Music Hall of Fame, to which he was elected posthumously in 1967, made the following citation: 'The velvet style of "Gentleman Jim Reeves" was an international influence. His rich voice bought millions of new fans to country music from every corner of the world…Posterity will keep his name alive because they will remember him as one of country music's most important performers.'

The Jim Reeves story started in Panola County, Texas, in August 1923 and ended when he died in a plane crash on 31st July 1964 – yet even today, half a century later, he is still a legend. The Country Music Hall of Fame, to which he was elected posthumously in 1967, made the following citation: 'The velvet style of "Gentleman Jim Reeves" was an international influence. His rich voice bought millions of new fans to country music from every corner of the world…Posterity will keep his name alive because they will remember him as one of country music's most important performers.'

WORLD EXCLUSIVE! The historic video you are about to view is very rare. Its existence was not even known by more than a tiny handful of people, until I acquired it, and it has never been made publicly available until now. It shows the scene of the plane crash that killed country music singer Jim Reeves and his piano player, Dean Manuel, on the outskirts of Nashville on the afternoon of July 31, 1964. This home movie was made on Sunday, August 2, 1964 by a bus driver for one of Jim's Grand Ole Opry colleagues, shortly after the crash location was broadcast on local radio.
In my 672 page book, "Jim Reeves: His Untold Story," (www.jimreevesbook.com), I devote two chapters to the events leading up to the crash and its aftermath. Following more than 13 years of exhaustive and painstaking research, including scores of interviews I did with experts and even eyewitnesses to the accident who were never questioned by authorities, I am able to offer a gripping, minute-by-minute account of what transpired. I relied on forensic evidence, information gleaned from the long-lost accident report, as well as new details given to me by the Air Traffic Controller who was the last to speak with Jim by radio. I unearthed handwritten notes made at the airport that day, and had the hands-on assistance of one of Jim's charter pilots, Bill Larson, who had flown the same plane — a Beechcraft Debonair — only the day before. (He was also the first to get airborne after a search was launched). I reveal the identity of the woman who spearheaded the search efforts (who was the wife of a well known country music singer), and I tracked down the military man who is credited with finding the wreckage. I also explore some intriguing mysteries, including why for two days authorities misdirected over 2000 ground and air searchers to another area entirely, even though airport officials knew from the moment the plane disappeared from Nashville radar precisely where it could be found. Then there is also the matter of the frantic search for a briefcase that Jim had with him, and the fact that the FBI entered the investigation.
I also reveal how, according to two of Jim's charter pilots who flew with him, Jim Reeves managed to get a pilot's license before he was ready to fly. CORRECTION. I misspoke in the audio referring to "Lee" Merriwether as having given Jim his flight exam. It was actually ELMO Merriwether. And I said the controller told Jim he'd be out of the rain in a "minute" when he actually said "a mile."

WORLD EXCLUSIVE! The historic video you are about to view is very rare. Its existence was not even known by more than a tiny handful of people, until I acquired it, and it has never been made publicly available until now. It shows the scene of the plane crash that killed country music singer Jim Reeves and his piano player, Dean Manuel, on the outskirts of Nashville on the afternoon of July 31, 1964. This home movie was made on Sunday, August 2, 1964 by a bus driver for one of Jim's Grand Ole Opry colleagues, shortly after the crash location was broadcast on local radio.
In my 672 page book, "Jim Reeves: His Untold Story," (www.jimreevesbook.com), I devote two chapters to the events leading up to the crash and its aftermath. Following more than 13 years of exhaustive and painstaking research, including scores of interviews I did with experts and even eyewitnesses to the accident who were never questioned by authorities, I am able to offer a gripping, minute-by-minute account of what transpired. I relied on forensic evidence, information gleaned from the long-lost accident report, as well as new details given to me by the Air Traffic Controller who was the last to speak with Jim by radio. I unearthed handwritten notes made at the airport that day, and had the hands-on assistance of one of Jim's charter pilots, Bill Larson, who had flown the same plane — a Beechcraft Debonair — only the day before. (He was also the first to get airborne after a search was launched). I reveal the identity of the woman who spearheaded the search efforts (who was the wife of a well known country music singer), and I tracked down the military man who is credited with finding the wreckage. I also explore some intriguing mysteries, including why for two days authorities misdirected over 2000 ground and air searchers to another area entirely, even though airport officials knew from the moment the plane disappeared from Nashville radar precisely where it could be found. Then there is also the matter of the frantic search for a briefcase that Jim had with him, and the fact that the FBI entered the investigation.
I also reveal how, according to two of Jim's charter pilots who flew with him, Jim Reeves managed to get a pilot's license before he was ready to fly. CORRECTION. I misspoke in the audio referring to "Lee" Merriwether as having given Jim his flight exam. It was actually ELMO Merriwether. And I said the controller told Jim he'd be out of the rain in a "minute" when he actually said "a mile."

He eventually obtained a job as an announcer for KWKH-AM in Shreveport, Louisiana, home of the popular radio program Louisiana Hayride. According to former Hayride master of ceremonies Frank Page, one day singer Sleepy LaBeef was late for a performance for the Hayride, and Reeves was asked to substitute. (Other accounts—-including Reeves himself, in an interview on the RCA album Yours Sincerely—-name Hank Williams as the absentee.)
Reeves scored his greatest success with the Joe Allison composition "He'll Have to Go", a great success on both the popular and country music charts, which earned him a platinum record. Released during late 1959, it scored number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Songs chart on February 8, 1960, which it scored for 14 weeks consecutive. Country music historian Bill Malone noted that while it was in many ways a conventional country song, its arrangement and the vocal chorus "put this recording in the country pop vein". In addition, Malone lauded Reeves' vocal styling—lowered to "its natural resonant level" to project the "caressing style that became famous"—as why "many people refer to him as the singer with the velvet touch." In 1963, he released his well proclaimed "Twelve Songs of Christmas" album, which had the well known songs "C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S" and "An Old Christmas Card". During 1975, RCA producer Chet Atkins told an interviewer, "Jim wanted to be a tenor but I wanted him to be a baritone... After he changed his voice to that smooth deeper sound, he was immensely popular."
