FreeBSD 10.2 First Impressions: I am pleasantly impressed with the direction of BSD. FreeBSD was fun to install, configure, and make pretty. From the CLI, I was easily able to build a robust stable system with many of the options similar to my beloved Gentoo Linux. Granted there are still a lot of rough edges, but all in all I was impressed and happy with my experience.

FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system for the i386, amd64, IA-64, arm, MIPS, powerpc, ppc64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC platforms based on U.C. Berkeley's "4.4BSD-Lite" release, with some "4.4BSD-Lite2" enhancements. It is also based indirectly on William Jolitz's port of U.C. Berkeley's "Net/2" to the i386, known as "386BSD", though very little of the 386BSD code remains. FreeBSD is used by companies, Internet Service Providers, researchers, computer professionals, students and home users all over the world in their work, education and recreation. FreeBSD comes with over 20,000 packages (pre-compiled software that is bundled for easy installation), covering a wide range of areas: from server software, databases and web servers, to desktop software, games, web browsers and business software - all free and easy to install.

Do you know why FreeBSD is better than Linux?
It is used by so few people that no one bothers to even try to hack it. And if they did, it is used by such hard core hacker types that they’d have no chance.
So you have much greater IT security.
For the exact same reason Apple didn’t have a lot of viruses one year back in the 1990s, because it was such a small share of the market.
I’ve heard BSD has better performance than Linux.
That depends on the version. The Mint Linux version has better performance than FreeBSD in most cases, but that’s because it doesn’t mimic a tablet.
A lot of Linux versions mimic tablets these days.
They think it is the wave of the future, and Mint’s popularity proves that isn’t true.
FreeBSD does not look like a tablet interface. So why isn’t it more popular?
It can be upgraded to Linux, but the inverse isn’t true. At least, not easily.
Linux is well known for its compatibility, like installing and upgrading at the touch of a button.
BSD has a lot of those features, though only within its own family. However, because it has a tightly controlled distribution, it is always compatible with other versions of itself.
Windows has not figured that out yet, after three decades of trying. Apple kind of is, backing up all your data to the iCloud before you update and upgrade all the software.
It has to be. Their default tech support solution is deleting everything and re-installing it.
That’s worse than control-alt-delete to reboot a PC.
Rebooting a Windows PC might mean patches don’t go in effect. A factory reset on Apple that fails means your data is on the cloud and your device is a brick.
Then you call tech support.
One advantage of BSD’s support by a core of dedicated programmers is excellent online support via forums and even the developers themselves. You aren’t going to get Linus to answer many questions on Linux personally.

How technology supported advocacy in ExperiencePoint's conversion
This talk will outline the strategy used to migrate a small Canadian software company's Linux-based server infrastructure to FreeBSD. Part advocacy-strategy and part best-practices, the hope is that you'll come away with some extra tools to promote implementation of FreeBSD in your workplace.
ExperiencePoint is a small (20 person) Canadian company that creates training simulations as web applications. The business is wholly dependent on its web server infrastructure for delivering its product.
In 2011, I started working for ExperiencePoint and began the process of replacing its aging collection of Linux servers with a more robust FreeBSD server infrastructure. The Linux servers in question had been set up in a hurry, and the skilled software engineers who had set them up were not professional systems administrators. Linux was selected as the server operating system, but there were great opportunities for improvement and change. This talk is the story of that change.
In addition to addressing the management concerns of replacing a "known" (Linux) with an "unknown" (FreeBSD), we'll explore the kinds of opportunities you should recognize in Linux environments you may come across. If you can improve reliability, reduce risk and improve performance, that's even better job security than switching to an operating system that nobody else knows.

FreeBSD is a free Unix-like operating system descended from AT&T UNIX via BSD UNIX. Although for legal reasons FreeBSD cannot be called "UNIX", as the direct descendant of BSD UNIX (many of whose original developers became FreeBSD developers), FreeBSD's internals and system APIs are UNIX-compliant. Thanks to its permissive licensing terms, much of FreeBSD’s code base has become an integral part of other operating systems such as OS X that have subsequently been certified as UNIX-compliant and have formally received UNIX branding. With the exception of the proprietary OS X, FreeBSD is the most widely used BSD-derived operating system in terms of number of installed computers, and is the most widely used freely licensed, open-source BSD distribution, accounting for more than three-quarters of all installed systems running free, open-source BSD derivatives.
FreeBSD is a complete operating system. The kernel, device drivers, and all of the userland utilities, such as the shell, are held in the same source code revision tracking tree. (This is in contrast to Linux distributions, for which the kernel, userland utilities, and applications are developed separately, and then packaged together in various ways by others.) Third-party application software may be installed using various software installation systems, the two most common being source installation and package installation, both of which use the FreeBSD Ports system.

FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system for the i386, amd64, IA-64, arm, MIPS, powerpc, ppc64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC platforms based on U.C. Do you know why FreeBSD is better than Linux? It is used by so few people that no one bothers to even try to hack it. And if they did, it is used by such hard core hacker types that they’d have no chance. So you have much greater IT security. For the exact same reason Apple didn’t have a lot of viruses one year back in the 1990s, because it was such a small share of the market. I’ve heard BSD has better performance than Linux. That depends on the version. The Mint Linux version has better performance than FreeBSD in most cases, but that’s because it doesn’t mimic a tablet. A lot of Linux versions mimic tablets these days. They think it is the wave of the future, and Mint’s popularity proves that isn’t true. FreeBSD does not look like a tablet interface. So why isn’t it more popular... -

FreeBSD 10.2 First Impressions: I am pleasantly impressed with the direction of BSD. FreeBSD was fun to install, configure, and make pretty. From the CLI, I was easily able to build a robust stable system with many of the options similar to my beloved Gentoo Linux. Granted there are still a lot of rough edges, but all in all I was impressed and happy with my experience.

It has to be. Their default tech support solution is deleting everything and re-installing it.
That’s worse than control-alt-delete to reboot a PC.
Rebooting a Windows PC might mean patches don’t go in effect. A factory reset on Apple that fails means your data is on the cloud and your device is a brick.
Then you call tech support.
One advantage of BSD’s support by a core of dedicated programmers is excellent online support via forums and even the developers themselves. You aren’t going to get Linus to answer many questions on Linux personally.

Although a deep understanding of C programming is not required, some understanding of C syntax and data types will be needed to gain a full understanding of the material, as George will probably present some comparative data structures. (e.g.: mbufs vs. sk_bufs).
