The thrashing machine, or, in modern spelling, threshing machine (or simply thresher), was first invented by Scottish mechanical engineer Andrew Meikle for use in agriculture. It was devised (c. 1786) for the separation of grain from stalks and husks. For thousands of years, grain was separated by hand with flails, and was very laborious and time consuming, taking about one-quarter of agricultural labor by the 18th century. Mechanization of this process took much of the drudgery out of farm labour.
The Swing Riots in the UK were partly a result of the threshing machine. Following years of war, high taxes and low wages, farm labourers finally revolted in 1830. These farm labourers had faced unemployment for a number of years due to the widespread introduction of the threshing machine and the policy of enclosing fields. No longer were thousands of men needed to tend the crops, a few would suffice. With fewer jobs, lower wages and no prospects of things improving for these workers the threshing machine was the final straw, the machine was to place them on the brink of starvation. The Swing Rioters smashed threshing machines and threatened farmers who had them.

A rare Wood Bros. Hummingbird thresher owned by the Richard Kuhlow family is successfully threshing oats at the 2011 Rock River Thresheree near Edgerton WI. A similar machine was purchased by Dick's grandfather and father in 1942. Dick remembers them threshing with it in the 1950s. He found this identical machine in central WI and got it running in time for the Labor Day Show. Dick is the operator atop the Hummingbird. Jason Snudon is operating the Case LA. George Hoffman (with the hat) and volunteer Tony are pitching bundles.
Filmed at the Winegarten Picnic and Farm Implement Show in Winegarten, Missouri, 31 July 2016. This thresher is powered by a wood fired steam engine. The threshing machine (or thresher), it is a farm implement for the separation of grain from stalks and husks. The bundles of wheat stems called sheaves are loaded on a conveyor belt. The thresher separates the grain and it is bagged. The waste is called straw and it will later be bundled into straw bales. The straw bales are used animal bedding and erosion control. Threshing is just one process in getting cereals to the grinding mill and customer. Eventually the Combine was invented. The Combine is a machine that combines the wheat reaper-binder and thresher into one machine.

Travis says: Here is the video from the St Albert Curd Festival where they broke the world record for the most threshing machines operating at once. A total of 111 antique threshing machines where operating in order to beat the previous record of 50. A special thanks to the sponsor of this video RD Legault Seeds Ltd. This movie shows the threshing of wheat used to make long straw. The wheat is passed through the drum of threshing machine to make the straw into yealms which are then taken away by horse and cart. This is one of many projects we undertake at the Weald and Downland Museum, West Sussex, to demonstrate the traditions of thatching, from growing and harvesting wheat, to thatching a historic building.

30 minutes of HEAVEN!! If you missed threshing at the West Liberty Labor Day Festival this year... Don't worry, here is a video of it!! The first load starts right away, the second load starts around 13 minutes. It was a great time with Ben Griffith on top of the threshing machine, Nathan Boyd on the watching ground operations with Tracy Oelker, Alan Griffith pitching wheat, Matt Hostetler pitching the first load of wheat, Dennis Bell pitching the second load. Next year will be a huge year, as it will mark 50 years!

Threshing Machine
We took a picture together
We held the camera in front of us
Your arm was cutting right into the frame
Your smile was for both of us
Something about the way we looked that day
Caught in the act of trying to look away
From the sight of our hands caught in this threshing machine
Do you feel like you've seen anything,
Ever, at all?
We took a walk on the dykes
And walked by the proscenium arches
Paused at the mouth of a rabbit hole
Stared down and wondered how far did it go
Something about the way we talked that day
Caught in the act of trying to look away
From the sight of our hands caught in this threshing machine
Do you feel like you've felt anything,
Ever, at all?
Try to imagine us in a house
Try to imagine us in a car
Try to imagine us staying alive
And not just hiding away in this bar
Something about the way you looked today
Caught in the act of trying to look away
From the sight of your hands caught in this threshing machine
Do you feel like you've done anything,
Ever, at all?
Do you feel like you've said anything,
