A coping saw is a type of hand saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cutouts in woodworking or carpentry. It is widely used to cut moldings to create coped rather than miter joints. It is occasionally used to create fretwork though it is not able to match a fretsaw in intricacy of cut, particularly in thin materials. Coping saw blades are always thicker and much coarser cutting than typical fretsaw blades and many others of its family members.
The coping saw was most likely invented in middle of the 16th century following innovations in metallurgy and with the invention of the spring-driven clock. Blades made of this material were strong and flexible thanks to rolling. This saw was also used in combination with so called Chevalet du Marqueterie, invented in 1780, allowing to saw pack of veneers with one angle of cut.
A coping saw consists of a thin, hardened steel blade, stretched between the ends of a square, c-shaped, springy-iron frame to which a handle is attached. The blade is easily removed from the frame so that the blade can be passed through a drilled hole in the middle of a piece of wood. The frame is then re-attached to the blade and the cut starts from the middle of the piece. Long cuts perpendicular to the edge of the material are possible but the shallow depth of the frame rather limits how far from the edge one may cut. The much deeper frame of the fretsaw is more useful for cutting well away from the edge but conversely cannot manage the thicker materials commonly cut by the coping saws.

The thin steel scrolling blade on a coping saw allows you to make intricate shapes in wood. It is designed to cut on the pull stroke, which helps keep the blade straight and easy to control. By tracing the outline of the molding onto the adjacent piece, you can quickly create a clean looking coped corner.

FULL ARTICLE AND SKETCH: http://www.thesmallworkshop.com/ I made this jeweler's saw because for many projects I needed to cut steel in complex shapes and had no way to do it except outsourcing it to a CNC. This saw can cut used table saw blades, my material of choice when making knives and other small tools. Which is more than enough for me. The fact that it does it quietly and that it's such a small simple tool is a bonus in my tiny home workshop.

ATTENTION!!!! I forgot to cover how to adjust blade tension of your coping saw. That's kinda important if you've never used one before and just bought your first one. Also, a coping saw is not to be confused with a "jewelers saw" which is the same thing but with a finer, very fragile blade, and intended for cutting sheet-metal. For either saw, to adjust the tension, you bend the frame of the saw in on itself while you're inserting the blade. You know that the tension is "right" if you can pluck the sawblade like the string of an instrument. Too tight, the note will be very high, and your blade could break while you're working. Too loose, plucking it may not make a "note" at all, and the blade will wobble while you're trying to saw, possibly even break. Hope that description helps, at least...

In this demonstration i'll be "Power Carving" a hen Canvasback decoy head. I use various Kutzall and Saburr tooth bits in my Foredom tool. I'm using white cedar for the wood. It is over sized and carved loosely not paying a lot of real close attention to anatomy. Remember it is just a decoy head. Much more attention to accuracy would be in place if it were for a decoy competition or show. Back in the early to mid 80's I used to compete in the Head Carving Competition at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pa. I also competed in other Head Carving contests. We had 1 1/2 hours to hand carve a decoy head using all hand tools, Knives, chisels, wood brace bit, coping saw, etc; Carving with electric grinders is much quicker although you have the dust & noise to contend with.
