Asghar Farhadi (Persian: اصغر فرهادی Persian pronunciation: [æsɣæɾ fæɾhɒːdiː]; born 1 January 1972) is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. For his work as director, he has received one Golden Globe Award and one Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.He was named as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world by Time magazine in 2012.
Farhadi was born in Homayoonshahr (Khomeynishahr), Province of Isfahan. He is a graduate of Theatre, with a BA in Dramatic Arts and MA in Stage Direction from Tehran University and Tarbiat Modarres University, respectively. Farhadi made short 8mm and 16mm films in Isfahan branch of Iranian Young Cinema Society before moving on to writing plays and screenplays for IRIB. He also directed such TV series as A Tale of a City and co-wrote the screenplay of Ebrahim Hatamikia’s Low Heights. Dancing in the Dust was his feature film debut, which he followed with A Beautiful City.
His third film, Fireworks Wednesday won the Gold Hugo at the 2006 Chicago International Film Festival. His fourth film, About Elly won the Silver Bear for Best Director at 59th International Berlin Film Festival as well as Best Picture at Tribeca Film Festival. It is about a group of Iranians who take a trip to the Caspian Sea that turns tragic. Famous film theorist and film critic David Bordwell has called About Elly a masterpiece.

Intelligence, émotion, profondeur : à l'image de l'œuvre sur laquelle ils font retour séparément, Asghar Farhadi et ses acteurs semblent toujours unis par un élan collectif d'une exceptionnelle qualité face à la caméra d'Auberi Edler. Et deux ans après le tournage, leur engagement envers ce film phénomène, qui a raflé la plupart des plus grandes récompenses du cinéma mondial et remporté en Iran un immense succès populaire, reste palpable.
Fracture sociale, répression du soulèvement populaire de 2009, libertés conquises de haute lutte par les femmes ... : Asghar Farhadi n'élude pas les questions politiques, insistant sur l'importance, pour lui, de continuer à tourner dans son pays, même si cela implique de se plier aux contraintes liées à la censure. En écho, l'un des acteurs souligne combien Une séparation colle étroitement à la réalité iranienne, suggérant que c'est peut-être cet ancrage "local" qui en fait une œuvre universelle. Mais si justes que soient les mots de chacun des protagonistes, c'est une séquence filmée sur le plateau d'Une séparation, à la fin du tournage, qui transmet avec le plus d'éloquence la vérité du film : la jeune Termeh, seule devant le juge, doit décider avec lequel de ses parents divorcés elle souhaite désormais vivre. Sarina, la fille du cinéaste, alors âgée de 13 ans, qui interprète l'adolescente, demande à jouer la scène sans répétition. Les larmes roulent sur ses joues tandis qu'elle affronte ce choix si douloureux - qui ne sera pas révélé au spectateur. Et face à cette toute jeune fille qui confie s'être alors "sentie actrice pour la première fois", deux hommes se mettent aussi à pleurer : le chef opérateur aux cheveux blancs, qui se précipite hors de la pièce dès que le "Coupez !" du cinéaste retentit ; et Asghar Farhadi lui-même, qui enfouit sa tête dans ses mains pour cacher son émotion. Une séquence que la réalisatrice s'abstient finement de commenter, et qui restitue de façon saisissante la densité humaine de ce grand film.

"Bonjour Monsieur Farhadi et bienvenue sur euronews. Vous venez tout juste de remporter le Prix Media, une récompense qui distingue notamment la diversité culturelle. Que représente un tel prix pour vous, en tant que cinéaste iranien ?"
Asghar Farhadi, cinéaste :
"Ce prix a autant de valeur et d'importance que les nombreux encouragements que j'ai reçus ces dernières années. D'un autre côté, c'est une nouvelle étape pour un scénariste comme moi qui a toujours réalisé des films en langue persane avec des dialogues en langue persane. Puisque vous le savez, une partie des acteurs de mon prochain film s'expriment dans une autre langue que le farsi. Et enfin, cela signifie que ceux qui ont lu le script de mon prochain film ont été en mesure de se connecter avec l'histoire et ne l'ont pas perçue comme une mission impossible à relever pour quelqu'un ne s'exprimant pas en farsi. Et cela signifie beaucoup pour moi."

"Vous avez remporté de nombreuses récompenses internationales pour votre dernier film "Une Séparation" dont l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger. Mais apparemment à votre retour en Iran, la cérémonie en votre honneur a été annulée par les autorités. Que s'est-il passé ?"
Asghar Farhadi :
"Mes amis et collègues du métier étaient sur le point d'organiser une cérémonie, très sincère et simple. Mais malheureusement, ils ont été confrontés à des problèmes qui rendait difficile la tenue d'une telle cérémonie, ce qui ne les pas empêché de tout tenter pour que celle-ci ait lieu d'une manière ou d'une autre. Personnellement, je ne voulais pas qu'ils aient davantage de problèmes et je leur ai demandé de renoncer. Contrairement à ce qui a pu être dit, ce n'est pas la Maison du Cinéma qui avait prévu d'organiser la cérémonie, mais quelques amis qui pour la plupart étaient d'anciens membres de cet organisme, fermé depuis. Ce qu'ils faisaient signifiait beaucoup pour moi, même s'ils ne pouvaient pas le faire comme ils l'auraient voulu. Je n'ai jamais pu savoir pourquoi la cérémonie a été annulée. Toutefois, malgré tout ce qui a pu se passer, j'ai trouvé leur attention très précieuse. Et puis j'ai eu la chance de bénéficier du soutien de bien des gens dans mon pays. Cette gentillesse n'a pas de prix, et pour moi ce soutien est un atout précieux d'une valeur inestimable."

"Le style de vos films n'est pas sans rappeller Tchekhov, Ibsen ou encore Kieslowski. Dans votre dernier film "Une Séparation", j'y vois une approche néo-réaliste, comment est-ce que cela se traduit concrètement ?"
Asghar Farhadi :
"Les livres que je lisais à l'époque où j'étais adolescent y sont peut-être pour quelque chose. Les histoires que je dévorais étant plus jeune étaient très proches de la réalité ; des récits qui ne se contentent pas de dépeindre une simple représentation de la réalité, mais révèlent plutôt des couches spécifiques de réalité qui, en elle-mêmes, contiennent d'autres couches bien complexes. Lire ces histoires en tant que jeune adulte a inconsciemment créé un certain goût chez moi qui s'est révélé quand j'ai commencé à écrire des scripts de films et des pièces de théâtre."

"Un artiste -et je considère que vous en êtes un en tant que cinéaste et scénariste- doit jouir d'une certaine liberté d'expression artistique. Où se trouve à vos yeux la limite à l'expression artistique et à la liberté, par rapport à la raison d'Etat ?"

The European Commission has selected Farhadi's next movie for its 60,000 euro 'Prix MEDIA' award. The film is due to be set in Paris with European casting.
Earlier this year, Farhadi's 'Separation' won two Oscar nominations and took the award for Best Foreign Language film, the first Iranian movie to win the honour.
In an interview with euronews in Cannes, Asghar Farhadi talks about his next project, the reaction in Iran, his cinematic style and the current restraints on Iranian film-makers.
*euronews:* "You've just won the "Prix MEDIA" a European award which recognises cultural diversity, what does this award mean for you as an Iranian Film maker?"
*Asghar Farhadi:* "The meaning it has for me is the same as all the encouragement I have received through these years. The other meaning is that I'm a writer who has always composed in the Persian language and whose dialogues have always been in the Persian language. Now some of the cast will be speaking another language. Finally, it means that those who have read the script for my next film have been able to connect with it and did not find it an unfamiliar story despite not knowing Persian, and that means a lot to me."
*euronews:* "You won many international awards for your last movie 'A Separation' amongst them an Oscar for best foreign language movie - but apparently when you returned to Iran, the official welcome dinner organised by the State of Iran was cancelled; what happened?"
*Asghar Farhadi:* "My cinema friends and colleagues were going to hold a ceremony, a very sincere and simple ceremony. Well, they faced problems and they could not hold it properly and they were still trying to hold the ceremony one way or another. I did not want them to have more problems and I asked them not to continue. The ceremony was not going to be held by the House of Cinema, (House of Cinema is Iran's biggest syndicate for cinema actors/actresses/film-makers but was closed earlier this year by the authorities), but by friends who were mostly members of the House of Cinema.
"What they were doing meant a lot to me although they could not do it the way they wanted to. I could never find out why the ceremony was cancelled. However, despite everything, it was very valuable for me. All this time, I have got so much support from the people of my country and I have been blessed with their kindness and this support is a great asset for me and very valuable."
*euronews:* "In your movies you have a certain style which reminds me of Chekhov, Ibsen and Kieslowski - certainly in your last movie 'A Separation' you have a style I would call neo-realistic; what for you is the task of this realistic style?"
*Asghar Farhadi:* "It might have been the books I read when I was a teenager. The stories I read at that time were very close to reality; not just a mere portrayal of reality but a selection of a layer of reality which, within itself, contained much more complicated layers of reality. Reading those stories as a younger adult has unconsciously created a certain taste which showed itself when I started writing movie scripts and plays."
*euronews:* "An artist - and I consider you as a filmmaker and screenwriter as an artist - you must have a certain freedom of artistic expression. Where is the borderline for you between artistic expression and freedom, and state censorship?"
*Asghar Farhadi:* "For someone like me and of my generation who was born and has grown up with these restrictions be they at home, at school, on the street, or at university; sometimes this borderline between being restricted and not being restricted is blurred. Not in the same sense that I sometimes hear: 'Restrictions lead to creativity'. This is wrong to say. Perhaps in the short run, restrictions can bring about creativity but, in the long term, it destroys it. Therefore, if there were no restrictions for Iranian film-makers, we would have seen more creativity from them."
*euronews:* "There are a lot of Iranian film directors who cannot work the way they wish in Iran. Some Western journalists call this a problem of censorship. How would you explain the problem?
*Asghar Farhadi:* "The problem is not a very clear and transparent problem that I can define for you. Perhaps if we summarise it in one word, it is the same as you say, censorship and restriction. This is not just from the system, not just from the authority and the ruling system.

A Cannes in occasione della 65esima edizione del Festival il regista iraniano ha ricevuto il "Premio Media" della Commissione europea. I 60 mila euro in palio serviranno a girare il nuovo lavoro, ambientato a Parigi, con un cast tutto europeo. Lo precede il successo di "Una Separazione" vincitore dell' Oscar come miglior film straniero.

"Asghar Farhadi, benvenuto, lei ha appena ricevuto il "Premio Media", un riconoscimento europeo che valorizza anche la diversità culturale, cosa significa per lei in qualità di cineasta iraniano?"
Asghar Farhadi, regista:
"Rappresenta un incoraggiamento, come tutti quelli che ho ricevuto in questi ultimi anni. Poi come scrittore rappresenta una novità, perché finora ho fatto film con dialoghi in lingua persiana, una parte degli attori del mio prossimo film parleranno infatti una lingua diversa dal farsi. Inoltre questo riconoscimento significa che coloro che hanno letto la storia del mio prossimo lavoro ci si sono ritrovati, non l' hanno sentita come estranea, nonostante non conoscano il farsi. E questo significa molto per me".

"I riconoscimenti internazionali non sono mancati nemmeno al suo ultimo film "Una separazione", che ha ricevto anche l' Oscar come miglior film straniero. Ma al suo ritorno in Iran le celebrazioni per la vittoria sono state annullata dalle autorità. Cosa è successo?"
Asghar Farhadi:
"Amici e colleghi stavano per organizzare una cerimonia, spontanea e semplice. Ma si sono trovati ad affrontare una serie di problemi che l'hanno impedita, anche se hanno tentato in tutti i modi di superarli per riuscire a tenere la celebrazione. Personalmente non volevo che si trovassero in difficoltà maggiori, ho chiesto a loro di rinunciare. Diversamente da quanto si è detto, non è stata la Casa del Cinema, il sindacato che rappresenta la categoria, ad avere organizzato la cerimonia, sono stati degli amici, in maggioranza membri della Casa del Cinema. Ciò che hanno fatto ha significato molto per me, anche se non sono riusciti a realizzare ciò che volevano. Non ho mai saputo perché la cerimonia è stata annullata. Nonostante tutto però, il loro impegno resta per me la cosa piu importante. Ho avuto la fortuna di godere del sostegno degli iraniani, sono stato benedetto dal loro affetto, questo per me ha un valore inestimabile"

"Lo stile dei suoi film mi ricorda Tchekhov, Ibsen o Kieslowski. Nella sua ultima pellicola "Una separazione" ritrovo un approccio che definirei neorealista, che radici ha?"
Asghar Farhadi:
"Risale forse ai libri che leggevo da ragazzo, quando ero un adolescente. Allora divoravo storie che raccontavano la realtà, o meglio, non si accontentavano di fornire una semplice rappresentazione della realtà, ma ne mettevano in evidenza aspetti precisi, che ne svelavano altri altrettanto complessi. Leggere queste storie in qualità di giovane adulto ha creato inconsciamente un certo gusto per questo stile, che poi si è mostrato quando ho cominciato a scrivere film o testi per il teatro"

"Un artista - ed io la considero tale in quanto regista - deve godere di una certa libertà d'espressione artistica. Qual'è il confine tra espressione artistica, libertà e ragion di Stato?"
Asghar Farhadi:
"Chi appartiene alla mia generazione, è nato ed è cresciuto nella repressione, sia essa a casa, a scuola, nella strada o all'università, in alcuni casi la linea di demarcazione tra subire delle restrizioni e non subirle è confusa. Per me non vale il principio secondo cui "le restrizioni alimentano la creatività". È sbagliato. Nel breve periodo, forse, ma a lungo hanno un effetto distruttivo. Se ci fossero meno restrizioni i registi iraniani darebbero prova di maggiore creatività".

"Molti registi iraniani lamentano di non poter lavorare come vorrebbero in Iran, e questo induce i giornalisti occidentali a parlare di censura. Lei che opinione ha di questa situazione?"

Nach vier Jahren der Trennung kommt Ahmad aus dem Iran zurück nach Paris. Seine französische Noch-Ehefrau Marie will die Scheidungsformalitäten endgültig erledigen. Von Anfang an bestimmt sie das Spiel, dessen Regeln Ahmad nicht kennt. Entgegen der Absprache quartiert sie ihn in dem ehemals gemeinsamen Haus ein. Das bescheidene Idyll an den Bahngleisen ist jetzt eine Baustelle. Hier plant Marie für sich und ihre zwei Töchter aus früheren Beziehungen eine neue Zukunft – ein Umbau in voller Fahrt.
Ahmad wird damit konfrontiert, dass Marie schwanger ist und seit Monaten mit einem neuen Mann, dem Nordafrikaner Samir, und dessen Sohn Fouad zusammenlebt. Zudem macht Maries älteste Tochter Lucie Schwierigkeiten, und der sechsjährige Fouad will abhauen. Der neue Anstrich des Hauses kann nicht verbergen, dass die Konstellationen innerhalb der Patchworkfamilie brüchig sind. Ahmad nimmt sich der verschlossenen Stieftochter an, die die neue Ehe der Mutter verhindern will. Erst von ihr erfährt er von dem acht Monate zurückliegenden Selbstmordversuch von Samirs Frau, die seither im Koma liegt – eine Tatsache, die auf schicksalhafte Weise das Leben der Familie zu bestimmen scheint. Als Lucie zu reden beginnt, bricht der Damm.
»Der Grund für alles was passiert, liegt in der Vergangenheit«, sagt der Filmemacher Asghar Farhadi über diese Geschichte, in der die Wahrheit Schicht für Schicht enthüllt wird.
