Manchester School of Art

Manchester School of Art in Manchester, England, was established in 1838 as the Manchester School of Design. It is the second oldest art school in the United Kingdom after the Royal College of Art which was founded the same year. The school opened in the basement of the Manchester Royal Institution on Mosley Street. It became the School of Art in 1853 and moved to Cavendish Street in 1880. It was subsequently named the Municipal School of Art. In 1880, the school admitted female students, at the time the only higher education available to women, although men and women were segregated. The school was extended in 1897.

The school became part of Manchester Polytechnic in 1970 and is now a faculty of the Manchester Metropolitan University. Its 175th anniversary in 2013 was marked by the opening of a new building designed by the Fairhurst Design Group and the refurbishment of the Chatham Tower. The school comprises three major teaching departments, Art, Design and Media, the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD) and together with the University of Manchester, the Manchester School of Architecture.

South Australian School of Design

The South Australian School of Design was an art school in the earliest days of the City of Adelaide, the progenitor of the South Australian School of Arts, a department of the University of South Australia.

Origin

In 1856 Charles Hill started a private School of Art in Pulteney Street, where, in that same year, the South Australian Society of Arts was formed.

In 1861 the South Australian School of Design was founded under the management of the Society of Arts and connected with the South Australian Institute, with Charles Hill in charge. In 1862 enrolments were low and decreasing, rising slightly to 21 students in 1863. From the beginning, students were encouraged to show their work at Society exhibitions, and special prizes were offered for members of the School. This led to much mediocre work being shown, but acted as an impetus to native talent. By 1868 there were three classes: girls, boys, and young men, with an average attendance of 25. The school moved into a larger hall at the Institute previously reserved as exhibition space, and the small schoolroom handed over to F. G. Waterhouse, curator of the Museum. A large consignment of busts and statues had been donated by the Royal Society to add to the plaster models already in use for drawing "in the round".

Manchester school (anthropology)

The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, founded by Max Gluckman in 1947 became known among anthropologists and other social scientists as the Manchester School. Notable features of the Manchester School included an emphasis on "case studies", deriving from Gluckman's early training in law and similar to methods used in law schools. The case method involved detailed analysis of particular instances of social interaction to infer rules and assumptions. The Manchester School also read the works of Marx and other economists and sociologists and looked at issues of social justice such as apartheid and class conflict. Recurring themes included issues of conflict and reconciliation in small-scale societies and organizations, and the tension between individual agency and social structure.

Manchester school members and interlocutors also played major roles in the development of the field of Social Networks in anthropology and the social sciences. John Barnes, Elizabeth Bott, and J. Clyde Mitchell were all associated with Gluckman's department.

The "Manchester School" was a number of playwrights from Manchester, England, who were active in the early 20th century. The leading figures in the group were Harold Brighouse, Stanley Houghton and Allan Monkhouse. They were championed by Annie Horniman, owner of the Gaiety Theatre, Manchester.

Manchester (Los Angeles Metro station)

Manchester is a bus rapid transit Metro Silver Line transitway station on the Harbor Transitway/I-110 at its overcrossing of Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles. The station was re-branded as a station for the Metro Silver Line when the line began service on December 13, 2009. The station is managed by Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The Firestone Station of the Metro Blue Line is located around 3 miles east of the station (at the intersection of Firestone Blvd. and Graham Avenue).

Layout

The station has two side platforms in the median of the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway). The platforms can be accessed using elevators and lifts from Manchester Avenue below the freeway. This station has two parking lots, one or each side of the freeway with a total of 127 spaces. The entrance to the station is provided by stairs and elevators under the freeway. Metro Local line 115 stops directly below the station at the street level (Manchester Avenue). On September 6, 2011, the new stop located directly below the Manchester Silver Line station opened for Metro Local line: 115. The new stop is only for eastbound passengers. A westbound stop for lines 115 was not constructed. The station was upgraded with improved lighting in December 2010. CCTV and next bus trip arrival television screens were added onto the station in December 2012 and the monitors became activated on June 2013.
