Shading
Techniques with
Pencil | Learn How To
Draw
Hello Friends,
Welcome to our channel- “Learn
How to Draw and
Paint”.
In this video, we will learn through simple and easy step by step method, how to draw using pencil shades.
Today, friends, we shall learn about different pencil shades as shown here. Pencil shading means creating different shades with the help of a pencil. You always have to begin every drawing with a pencil.
Basic shapes are first drawn with the help of a pencil. Pencils are also used to create different shades which can make drawings look real.
I am sure you want to learn these shades.
Remember, friends, you have to keep practising pencil shading. It is very easy and if you practice more, it will be of help to you in drawing pictures.
All you need for pencil shading is a paper and a pencil. Ok, let us begin!
First of all, make a rectangle as shown here. Make five equal parts of this rectangle and number them as
1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (read out distinctly). Keep the first box blank to show how the other shades would look when compared to the lightest colour
.
In the second box, with your pencil, start shading very lightly as shown here. Put very low pressure on your pencil. Remember that the shading should the same or equal all over the box. When you have finished shading in this box, it would look like this. A very faint pencil shade can be seen.
Let us move to the third box.
Here, you have to put a little more pressure on your pencil
that the second box. The pencil shade should be a little darker than that of the second box. Remember friends, the lines of the pencil should be in the same angle in all the boxes.
Fill in completely and move to the next box.
In the fourth box, you have to put more pressure than the third box. When you put more pressure, you get a darker shade and when you put less pressure you get a lighter shade. So, now, this box is filled too and it looks darker than the other boxes.
We will now be shading the last box which is box number 5. Here, we will have to put the most pressure so that the shading is the darkest among all the boxes. In this exercise, you are also learning the get control on your hand while drawing. You can easily draw and shade any number of figures if you have a good control on your hand. Ok, now we have shaded the last box too.
When you look at the rectangle now, you can easily see the different shades from Box number 1 to Box number 5. From the lightest shade to the darkest shade.
Now that you have learned pencil shading, you can use this in your drawings. Pencil shading is very useful for drawing different objects. You may not get this result on first attempt, but don’t get upset. After regular practice I am sure you will. Let me show you an example.
This is a box or a three-dimensional cube.
Suppose the light comes from this direction as shown by an arrow here. The top portion of the box will be of a lighter shade because of the light falling on it. So, you will use a lighter shade of pencil like the middle shade. Now move on to the left portion of this box. Here, the shade will be a little darker because some amount of light reaches here but not as much as the top. Lastly, this front portion of the box will have the darkest shade because light does not reach here at all (
Pause) You can also use the pencil shade to make a ground shadow for this box as shown here. So, you saw how pencil shading gave dimension to an object. The box looks so real with the shades.
Let us now draw a circle. Suppose the light is coming from this direction as shown by an arrow here. You can start shading from the top but here the shade will be very light. Go on shading the circle but as you move, go on making the shade darker. This is because the light reaches lesser and lesser as you move downwards.
Please make sure that the shading is done in the same angle all over the object. You can also erase a little bit of shading on the topmost area since it will have light on it. Now, add a ground shadow here with the help of shading.
With these examples, you learnt how useful pencil shading is. Keep practising this exercise to make your drawings look real.
