Bolivia (i/bəˈlɪviə/; Spanish: [boˈliβja]; Quechua: Buliwya [bʊlɪwja]; Aymara: Wuliwya [wʊlɪwja]; Guarani: Volívia [ʋoˈliʋja]), officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Spanish: Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia), is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. It is bordered to the north and east by Brazil, to the southeast by Paraguay, to the south by Argentina, to the southwest by Chile, and to the northwest by Peru. One-third of the country is the Andean mountain range, with its largest city and principal economic centers located in the Altiplano.
Before Spanish colonization, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the Inca Empire, while the northern and eastern lowlands were inhabited by independent tribes. Spanish conquistadors arriving from Cuzco and Asunción took control of the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, Bolivia was known as Upper Peru and administered by the Royal Court of Charcas. Spain built its empire in great part upon the silver that was extracted from Bolivia's mines.

This clip explores the relationship between the global free-trade economy and migration. It features the impact of free-trade policies on Jessy and Jaime's family business in Bolivia. As a result of economic collapse in Bolivia, due at least in part to globalization and free-trade policies, Jessy and Jamie — professional technical engineers by training — are forced to come to the United States and work as janitors in order to support their family. Today I had the chance to catch up with my Bolivian friend Alejandro and ask him a bit about his home town, Santa Cruz de la Sierra. In this podcast, Alejandro talks about cruceños (people from Santa Cruz), Bolivian music, food and culture. Have a listen, and if you have any questions just leave them in the comments below.
These are pictures I've collected in the country side of Santa Cruz in Bolivia, while working there. Gladis Moreno was one of the best voices of Bolivia, and a representative artist of great Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a beautiful and peaceful place with great food and culture, with it's own music and dances. Welcome to Santa Cruz with its own beautiful landscapes and music!
This documentary film explores the Afro-Bolivian community, their history, culture and traditional Saya music the recent movement that uses this music to pursue their social and political needs.
The Bolivian group Los Masis have been playing traditional Andean music for more than 40 years. They are dedicated to the preservation of the indigenous Quechua language and culture. At the 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival they performed as part of the "One World, Many Voices" Program. Bolivia is a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic society, but for generations it suppressed that diversity. Now, that diversity is being celebrated in a nation-wide push to preserve indigenous culture. Al Jazeera's David Schweimler reports from La Paz.
a word from the artist… This collection of music is very special to me because it embodies the sounds of the folklore and spirit of my native country, Bolivia. Each one, in its own way, represents a certain aspect of the varied and widespread culture of the land. Personally, they speak to me because Bolivian traditions were always kept in our home. From traditional music, food and dancing, these customs were at the heart of family life. So, making this CD was a logical step in my musical journey as it is so much a part of me. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed discovering and playing this fantastically unique music. http://www.msrcd.com/catalog/cd/MS1546

Why a safe and healthy workplace is important: If a workplace is safe and healthy, everyone can get on with their work effectively and efficiently. In contrast, if a workplace is disorganized and full of hazards, process breakdowns injuries and sickness absences are inevitable. The pain and direct loss of earnings suffered by workers in these circumstances is often matched by reduced productivity at the enterprise. This animation created by the SCORE team in Bolivia illustrates 'SCORE Training Module 5: Safety and Health at Work: A platform for productivity.' This module aims to provide SME participants (both employees and managers) with the knowledge and understanding they need to create and benefit from a safety and health system tailored to the realities in the enterprise.
In 2009-2010, I organized four indigenous community health workshops in Bolivia with the objective of promoting dialogue between biomedical healthcare providers and traditional healers about frequently occurring health problems. The idea was for the two groups to reach consensus about the best ways for traditional healers to deal with these conditions in their communities that do not have immediate access to biomedical healthcare. In Bolivia, thousands of young people live on the street. We are playing a crucial role in meeting the sexual and reproductive health needs of young people who often face discrimination and cannot afford the cost of health services. Mano a Mano Bolivia will construct a new health service in the community of Huasa Calle. This new facility will be fully equipped with the help of the municipal government. In the immediate term, this completed project will benefit the local economic development of the Huasa Calle and neighboring communities in several key ways. The presence of an improved clinic will reduce prenatal risk, increase and improve the availability of medical consults, improve infant and maternal health, increase the availability of primary health care, such as vaccinations, and improve worker satisfaction.

Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre, “La Ciudad Blanca,” is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub. On the Mirador at Laikacota, you get a feel for how incredibly high up in the Andes this city sits. Deep in the valley below lies the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Most visitors stay near the Plaza San Francisco, because of its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum. Around La Paz, you can ride down “El Camino de la Muerte," hike through the lunar landscape of Valle de la Luna and great...

The United States saw the emergence of leftist movements in different Latin American countries as threatening to its commercial interests, and secretly plotted with military strongmen and middle class interests concerned with the land reforms and nationalisation policies of new governments. In Guatemala Jacobo Árbenz was ousted by a CIA-inspired coup in 1954. Similarly US meddling in Chile's economic and political spheres weakened Salvador Allende grip on power, and he was ultimately deposed by his own military in 1973. The United States sent troops to the Dominican Republic in 1965 and Grenada in 1983, and trained and supported various acquiescent juntas, including a brutal regime in El Salvador. In Nicaragua the United States secretly supported the Contras against the leftist Sandinista ...

Bolivia has declared Israel a “terrorist state” and revoked a visa exemption agreement with Tel Aviv in protest at the ongoing Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. The move "means, in other words, we are declaring (Israel) a terrorist state," President Evo Morales said during talks with a group of educators in the city of Cochabamba on Wednesday. Morales added that the Israeli offensive shows "that Israel is not a guarantor of the principles of respect for life and the elementary precepts of rights that govern the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of our international community." Signed in 1972, the visa exemption agreement has allowed Israelis to travel freely to Bolivia without a visa. Earlier this month, the Bolivian president called on the UN High Commissioner for Human Ri...

Bolivian President Evo Morales has established a new military academy in the eastern town of Warnes, and pledged it will deal with the US “imperial oppression” in Latin America and all over the world. “While the empire's [as Morales refers to the US – ed.] military schools teach how to dominate the world, this school will help us learn to free ourselves from imperial oppression. We'll be a school for the defense of the people, and not the empire," Morales said at the opening. The school will start working with 100 students, and will be accessible to officers from other Latin American countries. The new academy’s “anti-imperialism” degree will be essential in order to be promoted to the rank of captain in the Bolivian Army, the local newspaper Pagina Siete has reported.
