Maria von Trapp who inspired The Sound of Music has died of natural causes at 99. Maria and her family fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938 and ended up performing around the US. Their story eventually inspired the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, and subsequent 1965 hit film. It tells the tale of a young woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the seven children of a naval officer widower, Georg von Trapp. Maria von Trapp was the second-oldest daughter of Capt von Trapp - with his first wife - and was portrayed as Louisa in the musical and is the last member of the famous family to die. What a long and amazing life. Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member of the famous Sound of Music von Trapp family, has died at 99 years old.
The second eldest daughter of Baron Georg von Trapp passed away last week while in her sleep at her home in Vermont.
The young lady and her family became famous when they escaped the Nazis in the 1930s and made their way stateside. That story then inspired the famous musical "The Sound of Music"

The Sound of Music is released 1965 is the fifth highest grossing film of all time.
and maybe not many people know that it was based on a true story.
it was based on Maria von Trapp's book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
The Untold Story of The Sound of Music:
A 19-year-old Maria von Trapp had been in training to become a nun in a Salzburg Abbey.
The Abbess sent her to be a tutor to the children of widowed naval commander Georg von Trapp.
The family became well-known as The Von Trapp Family Choir, and left their homeland around the time of the German annexation of Austria.
Georg was 25 years older than Maria when they married in the late 1920s
Between 1929 and 1939, Georg and Maria had three children together, as well as Georg's own seven children.
But it was the collapse of the bank holding the family's finances that was the spur behind their success as touring singing act, to Georg's embarrassment.
Anti-Nazi, the family did flee Austria when the Nazi party sought to recruit Georg to the German navy.
they caught a train to Italy and then on to the United States. Their Austrian home became Heinrich Himmler's headquarters.
Georg died in 1947 in Vermont. The Von Trapp Family singers continued singing for the next decade before they finally disbanding in 1957
shortly after they made an appearance on an Elvis Presley Christmas record, and they all went their separate ways.
Maria died in 1987, aged 82.
the sound of music movie was the Hollywood version of the Broadway version of the German film version of the book that Maria wrote.

Georg von Trapp
Corvette Captain Georg Johannes, Ritter von Trapp (4 April 1880 – 30 May 1947), often incorrectly referred to as Baron (Freiherr) von Trapp, was an Austro-Hungarian Navy officer. His naval exploits during World War I earned him numerous decorations, including the prestigious Military Order of Maria Theresa. Under his command, the submarines SM U-5 and SM U-14 sank 13 Allied ships totaling about 45,669 gross register tons (GRT).
Following Austria-Hungary's defeat and subsequent collapse, Trapp returned to his family but lost his first wife to scarlet fever, in 1922. Five years later, Trapp married his children's tutor Maria Augusta Kutschera, who trained the children to perform at various events as a way of earning a livelihood after most of the family's wealth was wiped out in a failed banking venture. The family came under increasing persecution from the Nazis after the Anschluss, when Trapp refused to serve in the German Navy due to his opposition to Nazi ideology. Fearing arrest, Trapp fled with his family to Italy and then to the United States, where he set up a farm and lived the remainder of his life there until his death in 1947. The story of his family served as the inspiration for the musical The Sound of Music (1959) and the 1965 film.

Their story eventually inspired the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, and subsequent 1965 hit film. It tells the tale of a young woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the seven children of a naval officer widower, Georg von Trapp. Maria von Trapp was the second-oldest daughter of Capt von Trapp - with his first wife - and was portrayed as Louisa in the musical and is the last member of the famous family to die. they caught a train to Italy and then on to the United States. Their Austrian home became Heinrich Himmler's headquarters.
Georg died in 1947 in Vermont. The Von Trapp Family singers continued singing for the next decade before they finally disbanding in 1957
shortly after they made an appearance on an Elvis Presley Christmas record, and they all went their separate ways.
Maria died in 1987, aged 82.

Maria e o Comandante Naval Georg von Trapp casaram-se em 1927, depois dela ser convidada pelo capitão para deixar o convento onde estudava teologia e era uma noviça, para ser sua governanta. Georg tinha sete filhos, do casamento ao qual havia ficado viúvo. Em 1935, Georg perde sua fortuna com a falência do banco austríaco onde estava depositada e a família, para sobreviver, começa a cantar profissionalmente. Após se apresentarem num festival de música, o sucesso fez com que começassem a cantar em turnês pelo país. Em seguida à anexação da Áustria pela Alemanha nazista em 1938, o anti-nazista George fugiu com a família pelos Alpes para a Itália e de lá para os Estados Unidos. -
