Spectrum Health System, commonly known as Spectrum Health, is a not-for-profit, integrated, managed care health care organization based in West Michigan. Spectrum Health's subsidiaries include hospitals, treatment facilities, urgent-care facilities, as well as physician practices that serve the western Michigan area.Priority Health is a subsidiary health plan with nearly 600,000 members. Spectrum Health is the largest employer in West Michigan with 23,900 staff, 1,500 physicians and 2,000 volunteers. The annual payroll and benefits amounted to $734 million in fiscal year 2009. Spectrum Health is Aa3 rated by Moody’s Investors Service, placing it among only 40 health care systems in the country to receive this high rating. Spectrum Health System is recognized as one of the Top 50 Integrated Health Care Networks in the United States.
Spectrum Health was formally incorporated on Sept. 19, 1997, bringing together the resources of Butterworth Health System and Blodgett Memorial Medical Center. It became the largest and most comprehensive health care organization in West Michigan after years of planning and a high-profile legal battle. In August 2000, Richard C. Breon was hired to lead the organization as CEO, and sought to form an integrated health care system.

Nikesh Ardeshna, MD, an epileptologist with Spectrum Health, provides an overview of different diagnostic tools and techniques for epilepsy, different conditions that are easily confused with epilepsy, and how information gathered from diagnostic tests can influence prognosis and treatment decisions.
Epilepsy is associated with several other neurological conditions, including migraine, stroke, traumatic brain injury, autism, intellectual disability, and Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Haykal, an epileptologist at Spectrum Health, discusses the nature of these associations, how to distinguish symptoms of epilepsy from those of other conditions, and how treatment and management strategies for epilepsy may change when other neurological conditions are present.
Dr. Smith answers questions from the audience about epilepsy in adults. He also discusses challenging situations commonly seen in clinical practice.
Dr. Ayman Haykal, an epileptologist at Spectrum Health, discusses recent advances in epilepsy treatment and new treatments that are on the horizon. Treatments discussed include recently introduced medications (and new ones in the pipeline), neurostimulation-based therapies, cell-based therapies, new surgical techniques, seizure prediction technologies, and much more.
