Hot Buoys Trimaran - Self-tacking Crab Claw Aft-Mast Sailboat
Hot BuoysTrimaran was designed by Philip Maise in 2010 to eliminate most of the problems associated with Bermuda rigs and full batten main sails. It isn't designed for great speed, rather it is designed for simplicity, low maintenance costs, and above all safety. Maise has moved the mast to the back of the boat where it can fall harmlessly away from sailors instead of on top of them. Nobody has to go on deck to change lines to tack or reef the sails. Maise has pioneered a new kind of crab claw sail where the upper spar is replaced with a bolt rope that attaches to the mast. The two sails he has for this boat are believed to be the largest in the world. Recent wind tunnel tests are showing crab claw sails are more efficient since they provide both lift and drive. There is zero camber with this sail. To provide sail shape the a boom located in the foot of the sail is pulled down to the deck using multiple blocks, or pulled upward with a spilling line. Maise is not done innovating on this design and has plans for 2011 to use a unique carbon fiber mast with two back spars located at 45 degree angles behind the mast. The boat is now in Miri Malaysia. Being just a single individual with such a large rig, Maise, reports he is always looking for fellow sailors to go on trips and he is looking for partners or sponsors to help toward the research and development.

Crab Claw Sailing Raft
Catamaran raft made from 12 * 6 metre 100mm electrical duct outboard and 12 * 100 litre plastic chemical drums inboard, rigged with Horizontal Sail System (Crab Claw) sail at Cass Bay, Lyttelton Harbour. Surprisingly we were able to sail to wind. Here we are close hauled.

Sailing Wavewalk W300 Catamaran Kayak
This Wavewalk W300 kayak is equipped with an outrigger and a crab claw sailing rig. The mini trimaran is uploaded in one piece on a car top. The sailor takes a passenger on board and sails his craft seated and then standing. The crab claw rig makes it possible to sail downwind as well as upwind. wavewalk.com

Hot Buoys Trimaran Dec 4 2010.avi
Video showing Hot Buoys Trimaran Sail Boat flying a Self-Tacking Crab Claw Sail. The sail is mounted on a mast located in the back of the boat. This configuration is typically called an aft-mast mounted rig. The rig and sail were designed by Philip Maise. This sail is believed to be the world's 2nd largest crab claw sail. The largest crab claw sail in the world was still in the ama of this trimaran at the time the video was shot. The boat itself is 65 feet long and 40 feet wide. There is some debate among sail designers as to whether this sail is better described as a lateen or lanteen sail. Most sailors are taught to think of a sail as an airplane wing turned vertically. This sail has zero camber and flies far more like an an airplane wing providing both drive and lift. See also related video showing this rig self-tacking in light winds without changing a single line. Owner Philip Maise has a Yahoo Users Group with more photos at: groups.yahoo.com

Gumotex Safari kayak: 1st Sail
Self designed Crab-Claw rigged Safari Gumotex inflatable kayak. Her first sail on the Solway Estuary April 2011, in the northwest of England. It was the first time i had sailed with the rig and I was testing it out in a wind of force 4-5. She was good on a run, and held her own on a tack, but I had to make some changes to her design by having an easier cleating method and raising the sail higher as not to interfere with the paddles of the kayak. But in all i was very pleased with the 1st results. It was hard to control while videoing!

Gumotex "Safari" Kayak Sail: 2nd Trial
A 2nd trial of my home made crab-claw kayak sail on my Gumotex "safari" inflatable kayak on the Solway Firth estuary. Wind strength a force 4. I went around the harbour at Port Carlisle getting an all-points sail in an anti-clockwise direction. Getting a wind on the beam, a run and beating to windward. She performed quite well after the lighter rig and better cleats i had added.
