Edinburgh International Festival's backstage opportunity is a collaboration between
EIF and
Edinburgh Napier University where students from the
Television Production and
Journalist courses work together to produce content for the festival's backstage website:
http://www.eif.co.uk/festivalbackstage/
Content is filmed by television soon to be graduates where also journalists carry out interviews with some of the best international performers attending the festival in addition to
Festival Directors and key partners. The journalist and television students then work together to edit together the content and assist with transcoding the material and upload it to the web.
The backstage opportunity is sponsored by
Standard Life who have spent the last 15 years associating themselve's with the project. The website offers behind the scenes material and a handful of unique interviews with actors, dancers, directors and musicians, designers, technicians and make-up artists.
The Deborah Colker dance company was founded by none other than Deborah Colker herself, born in 1960 in
Rio de Janeiro. She is a Brazilian writer, theater director, dancer and choreographer. She received the
Lawrence Oliver Award for outstanding achievement in dance in
2001 for the choreography work she did on the show 'Mix'. In 2009, she wrote, directed and choreographed the
Cirque de Soleil production, 'Ovo'.
During the workshops in
Edinburgh schools, excerpts of the show 'Tatyana' were performed. Tatyana performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in
2012 and features a soundtrack featuring music by
Tchaikovsky,
Stravinsky and
Kraftwerk.
It's a large-scale contemporary ballet which combines compelling storytelling with an inventive set to create an intense emotional roller coaster of a tale.
The Edinburgh Festival works everyear with around fifteen primary and secondary school children, inspiring and challenging them through education and outreach projects which encourage young people to gain a deeper understanding of the world in which we live in.
One of the workshops seen in the video took place at
Holy Cross Primary School in Edinburgh.
Holycross is a
Catholic primary school which serves families of all faiths from
North Edinburgh. They provide a
Catholic education for pupils from 5 -- 12 years old and have small class sizes.
Deborah Colker's dance company paid a visit to
Royal High School in Edinburgh and offered a professional dance class. The
RHS of Edinburgh is a state school run by the
City of Edinburgh Council. It was founded in 1128 and is one of the oldest schools in
Scotland. A total of 1200 pupils attend the school, drawn from four feeder primaries in the North-West of the city; Blackhall,
Clermiston,
Cramond and
Davidson's Mains.
The Edinburgh Napier University
BA (Hons)
Television degree offers students the chance to network with other like minded individuals, collaborate on independent project, working within specfic roles such as Camera
Operation, Directing and Producing.
The course lasts two years and focusses on training students to enable them to apply for Television Researcher jobs after graduation.
There are three television research modules, three production modules where students collaborate on pilot programmes in addition to either a dissertation or final TV project. Moreover, students have the opportunity to attend master classes at the
Screen Academy Scotland which hosts events with speakers from industry practioners. In addition to workshops and networking, students have the choice of shadowing staff at
STV studios in
Glasgow and through the Edinburgh
Napier mentoring programme, they can carry out a small number of placements there.
