Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati(Telugu: విజయలక్ష్మి వడ్లపతి), known popularly as Silk Smitha was an Indian film artiste who worked predominantly in the South Indian languages. She entered the film industry as an extra actress, and first got noticed for her role as "Silk" in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram. She became a sought-after 'erotic actress' in the 1980s and in a career spanning 17 years, she appeared in over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. On September 23, 1996, she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai, apparently having committed suicide.
Vadlapati Vijayalakshmi was born in a poor family in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. She left school after her fourth standard (in India, at about 8 years of age) due to the family's financial constraints. Her striking looks burdened her with uninvited attention, and her family married her off at a very young age. When she was ill-treated by her husband and in-laws, she ran away to Madras (now known as Chennai) and started living with an aunt.

She passed away while giving birth to her youngest son Pratiek Babbar, the one who was seen in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na as Genelia's younger brother. Besides being an outstanding actress, Smita was a newsreader and a photographer too.
Silk Smitha: Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, or Silk Smitha as you know her, is one of the most well known erotic actresses we know of. However, Vadlapati was trying to
change her destiny and name by turning producer after a successful stint in front of the camera acting in over 450 films for 17 years. Things did not fall in place for her and apparently she committed suicide by poisoning herself in 1996. Failed romance, depression and dependency on alcohol have been cited as other reasons for her premature death.
Divya Bharti: This bubbly actress left an unforgettable mark in Bollywood with movies like Deewana opposite Rishi Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan. She died at the age of 19 on April 5, 1993. Divya fell to her death off her husband's 5-storey Versova apartment building, in Mumbai. There were numerous speculations by the media regarding her sudden demise, including the possibility of accidental death, suicide and even murder.
