Nicol Williamson (14 September 1936 – 16 December 2011) was a Scottish actor once described by John Osborne as "the greatest actor since Marlon Brando". He was also described by Samuel Beckett as "touched by genius" and viewed by many critics as "the Hamlet of his generation" during the late 1960s.
Thomas Nicol Williamson was born in 1936 (he would later claim 1938 in Who's Who) in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, the son of a factory owner. His family later moved south to England, and Williamson was educated at the Central Grammar School for Boys, Birmingham. He left school at 16 to begin work in his father's factory and later attended the Birmingham School of Speech & Drama. He recalled his time there as "a disaster" and claimed "it was nothing more than a finishing school for the daughters of local businessmen".<ref name=telegraph>"Nicol Williamson". After his national service as a gunner in the Airborne Division, Williamson made his professional debut with the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1960 and the following year appeared with the Arts Theatre in Cambridge. In 1962 he made his London debut as Flute in Tony Richardson's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Court Theatre. His first major success came in 1964 with John Osborne's Inadmissible Evidence for which he was nominated for a Tony Award when it transferred to Broadway in 1965. 1964 also saw him appearing as Vladimir in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at the Royal Court Theatre. In 1968, he starred in the film version. Williamson's Hamlet for Tony Richardson at the Roundhouse caused a sensation and was later transferred to New York and made into a film, with a cast including Anthony Hopkins and Marianne Faithfull. Faithfull later stated in her autobiography Faithfull that she and Williamson had had an affair while filming Hamlet.
John Osborne (born 15 December 1981) writes books, poems and stories for Radio 4. He is based in Norwich, United Kingdom and studied German and Business at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of three non-fiction books. His first, Radio Head: Up and Down the Dial of British Radio, was published by Simon & Schuster in May 2009 and was selected as Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4. It was serialised in the Daily Mail and reviewed in The Daily Telegraph, and Scotland on Sunday. His second book, The Newsagent's Window: Adventures in a World of Second-Hand Cars and Lost Cats, was published in April 2010 and was awarded best memoir at the East Anglian Book of the Year awards.
His third book, Don't Need the Sunshine, was published by AA Publishing in May 2013 and is being adapted for BBC Radio 4.
He is the writer of several Radio 4 half-hour comedy shows including John Peel's Shed (2011), The Newsagent's Window, Valentine's Day (both 2013) and The New Blur Album (2014). John Peel's Shed was an adaptation of Osborne's sell-out Edinburgh show. The Newsagent's Window was "Pick of the Week" in the Radio Times as chosen by journalist Eddie Mair. Valentine's Day stars Suki Webster, Ann Beach and Isy Suttie, and is the story of a chef, Sean, who recounts his life by looking through his old Valentine's Day cards. The New Blur Album was Radio 4's "Comedy of the Week" and was a life story as told through the release of each new Blur album.
This is a special gift I hope you shall enjoy. This is the 1974 Argo Records release of The Hobbit as read by Nicol Williamson. I found this pristine 4 album set of vinyl recordings of Nicol Williamson reading The Hobbit at my local Goodwill store. Nicol Williamson utilizes his amazing voice to bring you this meaningful theatre of the mind presentation of The Hobbit. I have converted the recordings to digital MP3. There are no skips, no scratches in this recording. This recording is pristine and probably the cleanest recorded offering of this version of The Hobbit anywhere on the internet. Now, I am happy to share with you in this modern world of technology. Enjoy listening to this gift! Peace, Zest
On 25 January 2012, Luke Williamson announced on his father's official website that Nicol Williamson had died on 16 December 2011, after a two-year struggle with oesophageal cancer. According to him, Nicol Williamson passed away peacefully. "He gave it all he had: never gave up, never complained, maintained his wicked sense of humour to the end. His last words were 'I love you'. I was with him, he was not alone, he was not in pain."
Back in the 1960's TV was better. Simply that. In the days before the X Factor you could tune in to Frost on Saturday on ITV and watch David Frost introduce The Rolling Stones and then go to a panel discussion on the subject of Death. One panel member was the wonderful actor Nicol Williamson. He gives his views and then, unprompted, produces his Samuel Beckett book and simply reads. And it is sublime!

First, Nicol Williamson, though http://bit.ly/1q37gMa he fails to make this Macbeth work completely, is always interesting; probably, this is due to his intelligence...

Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy - In Theatres: 27 April 1986 Director: Tom Clegg Cast Nicol Williamson (The Exorcist III, Black Widow), Janet Suzman (Max), Ian Richardson (Dark City, Brazil) At midnight on 14th August 1947, an event took place that would change the world. That moment marked the dawn of Independence for India, the birth of Pakistan and the end of the British Raj—the last days of the greatest empire in history. The circumstances surrounding that epoch-making event: the conflicts, the intrigues, the pomp, the ceremony, are the theme of Mountbatten, The Last Viceroy. Through the force of his remarkable personality, and despite the conflict and intrigues, Lord Mountbatten altered the course of history, leaving a legacy that continues to this day.
To celebrate the holiday season, we slog through Gabriel's playthrough of Young Merlin for the SNES, a game greatly let down by its lack of association with Nicol Williamson in Excalibur. In this opening episode, Merlin forgets to rescue his drowning girlfriend to the utter contempt of her dad, while a prevalence of rainbow imagery leads to a frank and mature conversation about the alternative sexualities.

My review of the criminally underrated sequel, The Exorcist III(1990) starring George C. Scott, Ed Flanders, Brad Dourif, Jason Miller, Nicol Williamson, Scott Wilson, Nancy Fish, George DiCenzo, Don Gordon, and Lee Richardson. Directed by William Peter Blatty. Trivia Asked how he is able to get in and out of jail without being seen, The Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif) replies: "It's child's play." The camera cuts to a young, red-headed boy who looks a lot like the Chucky doll. Dourif provides the voice of Chucky in Child's Play and its sequels. The Gemini Killer character was inspired by the real-life serial killer, "The Zodiac." The University President claims that his favorite movie is The Fly. Lee Richardson, the actor who plays him, starred in The Fly II. William Peter Blatty wante...
