Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (March 21, 1902 – October 19, 1988) was an American blues singer and guitarist, noted for his highly emotional style of singing and slide guitar playing.
After years of hostility to secular music, as a preacher, and for a few years also as a church pastor, he turned to blues performance at the age of 25. He quickly developed a unique style by applying the rhythmic drive, vocal power and emotional intensity of his preaching to the newly learned idiom. In a short career interrupted by a spell in Parchman Farm penitentiary, he developed to the point that Charley Patton, the foremost blues artist of the Mississippi Delta region, invited him to share engagements, and to accompany him to a 1930 recording session for Paramount Records.
Issued at the start of The Great Depression, the records did not sell and did not lead to national recognition. Locally, Son remained popular, and in the 1930s, together with Patton's associate, Willie Brown, he was the leading musician of Coahoma County. There he was a formative influence on Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. In 1941 and 1942, House and the members of his band were recorded by Alan Lomax and John W. Work for Library of Congress and Fisk University. The following year, he left the Delta for Rochester, New York, and gave up music.
"Death Letter", also known as "Death Letter Blues", is the signature song of the Delta blues musician Son House. It is structured upon House's earlier recording "My Black Mama, Part 2" from 1930. House's 1965 performance was on a metal-bodied National resonator guitar using a copper slide.
One commentator noted that it is "one of the most anguished and emotionally stunning laments in the Delta blues œuvre."
Lyrically, the song is about a man who learns of the death of the woman he loves through a letter delivered to him early in the morning. The narrator later views her body on the cooling board at the morgue, attends her funeral, and returns to his home in a state of depression.
House's lyrics draw from traditional sources. Other blues musicians recorded related songs, including Lead Belly ("Death Letter Blues"), Ishman Bracey ("Trouble Hearted Blues"), Ida Cox ("Death Letter Blues"), Robert Wilkins ("Nashville Stonewall") and Blind Willie McTell ("On The Cooling Board").
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.
The Delta blues is one of the earliest styles of blues music. It originated in the Mississippi Delta, a region of the United States that stretches from Memphis, Tennessee in the north to Vicksburg, Mississippi in the south, Helena, Arkansas in the west to the Yazoo River on the east. The Mississippi Delta area is famous both for its fertile soil and its poverty. Guitar and harmonica are the dominant instruments used, with slide guitar (usually on the steel guitar) being a hallmark of the style. The vocal styles range from introspective and soulful to passionate and fiery. Delta blues is also regarded as a regional variation of country blues.
Although Delta blues certainly existed in some form or another at the turn of the 20th century, it was first recorded in the late 1920s, when record companies realized the potential African American market in Race records. The ‘major’ labels produced the earliest recordings and consisted mostly of one person singing and playing an instrument; however, the use of a band was more common during live performances. Current belief is that Freddie Spruell is the first Delta blues artist recorded, as he waxed "Milk Cow Blues" in Chicago in June 1926. Record company talent scouts made some of these early recordings on 'field trips' to the South; however, the labels invited some Delta blues performers to travel to northern cities to record. According to Dixon & Godrich [1981], Tommy Johnson and Ishman Bracey were recorded by Victor on that company's second field trip to Memphis, in 1928. Robert Wilkins was first recorded by Victor in Memphis in 1928, and Big Joe Williams and Garfield Akers also in Memphis (1929) by Brunswick/Vocalion.
A house is a building that functions as a home, ranging from simple dwellings such as rudimentary huts of nomadic tribes and the improvised shacks in shantytowns to complex, fixed structures of wood, brick, marble or other materials containing plumbing, ventilation and electrical systems. Most conventional modern houses in Western cultures will contain a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or cooking area, and a living room. In traditional agriculture-oriented societies, domestic animals such as chickens or larger livestock (like cattle) may share part of the house with humans. The social unit that lives in a house is known as a household. Most commonly, a household is a family unit of some kind, although households may also be other social groups or individuals. The design and structure of the house is also subject to change as a consequence of globalization, urbanization and other social, economic, demographic, and technological reasons. Various other cultural factors also influence the building style and patterns of domestic space.

Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (March 21, 1902 - October 19, 1988) was an American blues singer and guitarist. House pioneered an innovative style featuring strong, repetitive rhythms, often played with the aid of slide guitar, and his singing often incorporated elements of southern gospel and spiritual music. House was an important influence on Muddy Waters and also on Robert Johnson. A seminal Delta blues figure, he remains influential today, with his music being covered by blues-rock groups such as The White Stripes.

My poor little house is falling apart. Just the other day, a small piece of our lounge room roof fell in. They repaired it. With a patch. A board nailed in place with three planks of wood. Resembling a bandaid. As though the house might heal itself like you might. Like I could take it off next week to give it some air to find the faintest scar and say to myself, “Gosh, you’ve healed quickly”. Not my little house. It’s getting quite a few of these ‘patches’. Two winters ago, some of the kitchen roof fell in. Too much rain you see. And despite what the owner says, it is not due to the leaves in the gutter. Which he collects sometimes from up his ladder. All 80 years of him. When they tacked the kitchen onto the original structure, they left the gutter running slightly downhill into our kit...

This is a short interview of SON HOUSE speaking about what the blues REALLY means to him. He was very opinionated when it came to what he deemed to be real blues. He was quite critical of young blues players taking their "Jump" music and adding the blues on the title. His Blues was the REAL Blues, raw and from the heart, there's not a fancy backing band that accompanies Son House in most of his songs, just him, his guitar and a whole lot of grief.

(1977) Son House: Preachin’ the Blues “In May 1975, an article about the documentary called ‘Son House on film’ appeared in an issue of a blues quarterly called ‘Whiskey, Women and…’. King to do the film’s narration track.” a photograph showed a young man sitting with Son and Evie on the steps of 61 Grieg Street with the caption saying it was the “Director Louis Villalon.” Mix had brought Villalon in the intervening year. His Blues was the REAL Blues, raw and from the heart, there's not a fancy backing band that accompanies Son House in most of his songs, just him, his guitar and a whole lot of grief. This is a short interview of him speaking about what the blues REALLY means to him. It was recorded after his re-discovery in the 1960s when he was an older man. I'd love to see the whole of this interview, I've only seen bits and pieces of it in differant Documentories and films, never the whole thing or the small concert that he would have played. Son House tells us how to make the blues
The interview has been preserved on field tape FT-2809 in the SFC's John Edwards Memorial Foundation Collection. Many of the questions focus on House's early career in Mississippi and memories of his blues contemporaries. In the clip SON House explains the origins of Charley Patton's song "Charlie Bradley's Ten Sixty-Six Blues": WHICH HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET.
More from Inside Edition: http://bit.ly/2bF0iuC Professor Robert Kelly was doing a live job interview out of his own home through video chat on BBC Friday morning discussing the impeachment of South Koreas president but had some intruders. To his surprise, his toddler daughter, and infant son snuck into the room during the discussion. Kelly attempted to stay composed and didn't even look behind him. His wife frantically came running in to grab the children. The video went viral and left the BBC reporter giggling at the cute spoof.

Son House Delta Blues - ONLY BLUES MUSIC
Legends of the Delta Blues ● Son House ● Johnny Shines ● John Lee Hooker ● Bukka White
I had my head layin' in my hand Ooh, when I woke up this mornin' I had my head layin' in my hand I can't go on givin' If I'm livin' in the house of the blues
Lord, I had a fever My body cold and wrecked with pain Yes, I had such a fever Felt like I was goin' up in flame If I don't get my baby back I know I'm never gonna be the same
She told me she loved me And I just laughed and played the fool Whoa, I thought she was crazy And I thought I was cool But oh, but the lesson I learned It's time for me to go back to another school
Listen to me, baby Hear every word I said I need you here beside me 'Cause without it, I'd be dead
I done lost everything Everything a man can lose I can't go on givin' Still in the house of the blues
She told me that she loved me But I just laughed and played the fool I thought she was crazy And I thought that I was bein' cool Well, I can't go on givin' If I'm livin' in the house of the blues
Alright
I had my head layin' in my hand Ooh, when I woke up this mornin'
