Perambalur (Tamil: பெரம்பலூர் மாவட்டம்) is an administrative district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The district headquarters are located at Perambalur. The district occupies an area of 1,752 km² and has a population of 4,93,646 (as of 2001), making it the least populous in the state.
Perambalur district is a centrally located inland district of Tamil Nadu, spread over 3,69,007 ha, which was trifurcated from the erstwhile composite Tiruchirappalli district and was formed on 1 November 1995. The district is bounded by Cuddalore district in the north, Tiruchirappalli district in the south, Thanjavur in the east and Namakkal and Tiruchirappalli districts in the west. The total geographical area of the district is 3,69,007 ha, and net sown area and gross sown area are 2,16,422 ha and 2,37,136 ha, respectively. The net area under irrigation is 71,624 ha.
The district lies in the Southern plateau & hill zone of Agro-climate regional planning with characteristics of semi-arid climate. The soil is predominantly red loamy and black soil. The normal rainfall of the district is 908 mm which is less than 946.9 mm, the normal rainfall of the State. The precipitation during northeast monsoon, southwest monsoon and remaining winter & hot weather period account for 52%, 34% and 14% of annual rainfall, respectively.

Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal about 132 km, from Kolkata.
It is famous for its terracotta temples and baluchari saris. The town has a glorious past
that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving.
It prospered in the 17th and early 18th Centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the
Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the
most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages
of time. The history of Bishnupur can be traced back to 694 AD, when King Raghunath I
founded the Malla dynasty. However, it was much later in 994 AD that the place was named
Bishnupur. The name is derived from the name of the name of the Hindu God ‘Vishnu’.
The majority of the people belong to the ‘Vaishnava ‘ sect. The most powerful king of the
dynasty was King Raghunath Singh Dev II, who ruled from 1626 AD. At that time the

close friendship with the king and there followed a period of peace when art and music,
already flourishing, reached great heights. It was during this period that the Jorebangla
Temple was erected.

The dam water is mainly used for irrigational purpose and there is a small hydel power station too. The hanging bridge across Kallada river gives a good view of the dam.
There is a small aquarium and the adventure zone (9 am to 5.30 pm on all days) for tourists are near the dam. Thenmala eco tourism provides entry ticket to various tourist areas -- Culture, adventure, leisure zones. The Deer rehabilitation centre (2 km from dam) has a small collection of stranded deers - Spotted deer and the sambar. There is a 800 m long trekking route (simple) at the periphery of the protected area. The dam/lake premises is forested and is in Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. The famous Palaruvi falls (100 m) is 16 km away on the Thenkasi road, accessible by trek.
