The construction of the stadium began in 1960 and the stadium was officially opened on 10 April 1962, by the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Tuanku Syed Putra, of Perlis., making it the first indoor stadium in Malaysia.
The stadium was renovated in 1982.
