Animation explaining how electricity is produced using a hydroelectric facility.
This video project was made for AP-B Physics class. We built and demonstrated a hydroelectric generator and explain the process of how it works and the physics behind it in the concept of magnetic induction. Our generator will take advantage of hydroelectric power in order to generate an electric current.

Materials (seriously guys all the materials are visible in the video):
- 8 neodymium magnets (purchased from Hobby Lobby for $1 each)
- lots of coiled copper wire to make coils. Can buy "magnet wire" from Radioshack
- Turbine made of spoons
- Turbine axle made of a dowel/skewer stick and straws and some foam to keep it in place
- 2 CDs or something round to mount the wires and magnets
- Large plastic juice bottle with a hole at the top and bottom (to drain)
- 1 old AC adapter / "wall wart" to obtain the next two items:
- 1 Step-Up Transformer (the adapter has a step-down transformer, wire it in reverse instead)
- 1 Bridge rectifier (usually visible as four diodes and a capacitor, as described at 2:36)
- LEDs to look cool

This project was used to test how water pressure (PSI) would affect Hydro electric output. We simulated this with locating Penstocks near the bottom ( higher pressure) and middle (lower pressure) of a 5 gallon bucket.
Our hypothesis is that the penstock at the bottom with greater pressure will = higher energy output
We matched the inflow of water with the outflow and also measured and maintained the fall or "head" from the penstock to the turbine, so water pressure alone was measured.
Results:
We managed approx 1.98v on Multimeter from the bottom penstock and 1.57v from the middle.
Bottom penstock = .4694 PSI
Middle penstock - .2347 PSI
Our conclusion is more PSI = more power output.
Head, or the pressure of falling water is created by vertically locating the turbine well below the intake of the penstock.
Our next experiment will be testing a high head vs. low head dam for energy production.

Hydroelectric power system at Bear's Mill in Greenville, Ohio, using a 150 year old Leffel vertical turbine, a drive shaft and differential from an old Chevy truck, a pulley system and two 3kW DC servo motors/generators. The turbine itself, with a seven foot head of water, has the capability of delivering 15kW of power. This is a test system only, with 6kW capability. Much more is planned.

Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable energy, accounting for 16 percent of global electricity consumption, and 3,427 terawatt-hours of electricity production in 2010, which continues the rapid rate of increase experienced between 2003 and 2009.
Hydropower is produced in 150 countries, with the Asia-Pacific region generating 32 percent of global hydropower in 2010. China is the largest hydroelectricity producer, with 721 terawatt-hours of production in 2010, representing around 17 percent of domestic electricity use. There are now three hydroelectricity plants larger than 10 GW: the Three Gorges Dam in China, Itaipu Dam in Brazil, and Guri Dam in Venezuela.
The cost of hydroelectricity is relatively low, making it a competitive source of renewable electricity. The average cost of electricity from a hydro plant larger than 10 megawatts is 3 to 5 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour. Hydro is also a flexible source of electricity since plants can be ramped up and down very quickly to adapt to changing energy demands. However, damming interrupts the flow of rivers and can harm local ecosystems, and building large dams and reservoirs often involves displacing people and wildlife. Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, the project produces no direct waste, and has a considerably lower output level of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than fossil fuel powered energy plants.

This project was used to test how water pressure (PSI) would affect Hydro electric output. We simulated this with locating Penstocks near the bottom ( higher pressure) and middle (lower pressure) of a 5 gallon bucket.
Our hypothesis is that the penstock at the bottom with greater pressure will = higher energy output
We matched the inflow of water with the outflow and also measured and maintained the fall or "head" from the penstock to the turbine, so water pressure alone was measured.
Results:
We managed approx 1.98v on Multimeter from the bottom penstock and 1.57v from the middle.
Bottom penstock = .4694 PSI
Middle penstock - .2347 PSI
Our conclusion is more PSI = more power output.
Head, or the pressure of falling water is created by vertically locating the turbine well below the intake of the penstock.
Our next experiment will be testing a high head vs. low head dam for energy production.
