Children of gravediggers at Kalpalli cemetery
Thirty children of gravediggers’ families at Kalpalli cemetery in
Bengaluru have made a few new good friends. A group of volunteers from an
NGO are visiting them daily to conduct after school classes right at the graveyard.
Twenty dalit families live in the graveyard here and make a living by digging graves. They have been pursuing their family profession for the last three generations.
Most of them have not gone to schools and find it difficult to get any other work. As digging graves is a low paid job and with burials not happening every day, they struggle to feed their families.
