"The World Trade Center was Yamasaki's most prestigious, highly visible commission. Its would-be levelers were, presumably, a band of terrorist who packed a van with explosives and detonated it in the basement garage. There intention was to blow out the supporting collums along one wall of tower 2, causing it to keel over and tople against its twin. Yamasaki HAD ENGINEERED HIS TOWERS TO WITHSTAND THE FORCE OF A 747 SHEARING INTO THEM-THE NIGHTMARE SCENARIO OF AN EARLIER, MORE "INNOCENT" ERA-and though shaken by february 93 blast, his squared-off tubes remained standing. 6 People died, but scores of thousands might have if the collums had failed. Though the terrorist had used sufficient explosives to the job, according to Eugene Faso, The Port Authority's Chief Engineer, "They had built the wrong kind of bomb' "

Though renewal afforded the shrewd developers who worked the system unparalleled oportunities to cash in on the publics nickel, its broader purpose remained that of reconfiguring the city along the idealized lines of regional planning. Thus, it also functioned as "Negro Removal" - a cynical contemporary wordplay unfortunately supported in fact.
It is generaly estimated that Robert Moses, in hus dual capacities as Chair of the Commitee on Slum Clearance from 1948 till 1960 and New York City Construction Coordinator, displaced more than 100.000 people, 40% of them black or latino, under Title 1 Renewal legislation. Less than 10% of those evicted were subsequently found "qualified" to live in the housing *built on the sites of older homes.
According to Moses's own descriptions, an effective tactic for encoraging tenants to "self relocate" was "spot demolitions," carried out on the site slated for renewal before it had been completly vacated... (According to Moses) 'The critics say we are bulldozers. Well, bulldozing is just exactly what the ghettos need. They must be ruthlessly torn down and not a vestige of them left to remind us their infamy.' "

Divided We Stand: A Biography of New York's World Trade Center
The Downtown Lower Manhattan Association and Department of City Planning, in their joint 1993 Plan for Lower Manhattan, proposed RADICALLY CULLING THE HERD OF OLDER BUILDINGS. The suggestion of even broader plazas, in place of OBSOLETE SKYSCRAPPERS, put a positive spin on an OFF-THE RECORD OBSERVATION BY THE DLMA spokesman that in order to stabilize property values, SEVERAL DOZEN DOWNTOWN OFFICE BUILDINGS WOULD SIMPLY HAVE TO BE Click to view linkge 206 Divided We Stand Eric Darton(1999)
The Port Authority closed the 1990s with a stream of press releases announcing the rental of unimaginable huges quantities of Trade Center office space to Cutting Edge firms like Sun Microsystems. Yet around the complex A MILLION SQAURE FEET STOOD EMPTY, and the building originaly intended as great catalizing chambers of world trade were by degrees, transforming into a kind of DISJUNTIVE REAL ESTATE LAYER-CAKE. One story above the carpeted, wood- paneled offices of a Japanese securities firm,
A GROUP OF ARTIST FILLED BARE WALL WITH BOLDLY COLLORED IMAGES AND HUNG SCULPURES FROM THE EXPOSED CEILING GIRDERS OF VAST ECHOING CAVERNS. As part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council program that TURN SOME OF THE VACANT SPACE IN THE TOWER OVER TO ARTIST RENT FREE, 40.000 SQUARE FEET OF CONCRETE FLOOR lay painted and strewn with the Raw materials of creative urge that has never been easily reconciled with the imperatives of a bottom line. Under such conditions, one could begin to read in the Trade Center symptoms of an internal fragmentation quite at odds with the image of a thriving, Class-A lower Manhattan Office Click to view linkges 191-192 Divided We Stand Eric Darton (1999)
Shortly before the building collapsed, several NYPD officers and Con-Edison workers told me that Larry Silverstein, the property developer of One World Financial Center was on the phone with his insurance carrier to see if they would authorize the controlled demolition of the building

Nick Broomfield on the weird and wacky world of Sarah Palin.
Nick Broomfield is a documentary filmmaker. He studied Law at Cardiff, and Political Science at Essex University before going on to study Film at the National Film School. He made his first film Who Cares about slum clearance in Liverpool, while at University. He is known for his idiosyncratic style of filmmaking which he developed while making Driving Me Crazy in 1988. As it was a film hopelessly out of control, Nick decided to place himself and the producer of the film in the story, as a way of making sense of the event. This experiment led to a more investigative and experimental type of filmmaking as seen in films such as The Leader, His Driver and his Driver’s Wife, Aileen Wurnos, Kurt and Courtney and Biggie and Tupac. His most recent film is Sarah Palin: You Betcha. Nick is the recipient of the following awards amongst others: Sundance first prize, British Academy Award, Prix Italia, Dupont Peabody Award, Grierson Award, Hague Peace Prize, Amnesty International Doen Award.

High Cost of Highways - Red Hook as a disintegrated Peninsula
Final Video for RNYU Summer 2011 Class. Columbia University.
The Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) was completed in 1964. The BQE was built to accommodate both commercial and non-commercial traffic. The goal was to alleviate traffic from local streets and to connect the boroughs quickly. Robert Moses was the master planner of the BQE. “Once Moses drew his proposed route for the BQE on the map, his engineers were able to transform this "line on a map" into a highway. This often meant clearing block after block of neighborhoods, often in the name of "slum clearance." The people from Red Hook tried to fight against of the construction and they wanted to run it down on Van Brunt Street by the water. “Instead, Moses shoved it through Hicks Street and bisected Red Hook…” “The story was different in nearby Brooklyn Heights, whose more affluent and influential residents were able to win design concessions…” Celia Cacace said: “They (Brooklyn Heights) got the Promenade and we got the shaft.”
Highways produce big impacts in city and neighborhood. In Red Hook, is the lack of connectivity to the rest of Brooklyn thought local roads. The elevated portion on Red Hook has a lack of shoulders; which in case of emergency produces congestion and major regular road damage, due the high amount of commercial and non-commercial vehicles that transit every day. The high congestion coming from the emission produces air pollution, which is one cause of asthma. In Red Hook 1 in 4 people have asthma.
