Socrates (/ˈsɒkrətiːz/;Greek: Σωκράτης [sɔːkrátɛːs], Sōkrátēs; 470/469 – 399 BC) was a classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. He is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes. Plato's dialogues are among the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates to survive from antiquity, though it is unclear the degree to which Socrates himself is "hidden behind his 'best disciple', Plato".
Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method, or elenchus. The latter remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions, and is a type of pedagogy in which a series of questions is asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at hand. Plato's Socrates also made important and lasting contributions to the field of epistemology, and his ideologies and approach have proven a strong foundation for much Western philosophy that has followed.
Socrates Chrestus (Greek: Σωκράτης ό Χρηστός; Chrestus means "the Good"; died 90–88 BC) was a Greek prince and King of Bithynia.
Socrates was the second son born to the Monarchs Nysa and Nicomedes III of Bithynia. He had a sister called Nysa and his eldest brother was his father’s heir Nicomedes IV of Bithynia. He was born and raised in Bithynia and his mother's maternal uncle was King Mithridates VI of Pontus.
Socrates was a popular prince with the citizens of Bithynia. He received the surname Chrestus because he was peaceful and lamented in his personality.
The father of Socrates, Nicomedes III, died in c. 94 BC and his brother became King, as Nicomedes IV . The first few years of his rule of Nicomedes IV were relatively peaceful. Socrates unfortunately fell under the evil influence of Mithridates VI, who persuaded him to assert his claim to the throne. Mithridates VI sent an assassin named Alexander to murder Nicomedes IV, but his plot failed.
Mithridates VI formed an alliance with Socrates. As a part of the alliance, Mithridates VI betrothed or married Socrates to his daughter Orsabaris, thus maintaining indirect control of the Kingdom of Bithynia.

Disclaimer - we introduce spirit in a light, fun and relaxed atmosphere - that is the premise for our show. Socrates - they don't get any better than this. He was a fun loving spirit and didn't mind poking his tongue out at certain bodies such as the governments of today and religion. He lept into Alison's body after saying he didn't come down to 3D and quite literally went in for a full trance channel a couple of times. https://konoz.io/nikola.danaylov Every once-in-a-while, it is a good thing to do a headstand and look at the world from a different perspective. In podcasting terms that would mean putting Socrates in the hotseat and making me answer questions, rather than let me hide in asking them. And I could’t think of a person better qualified to do that than Trevor Haldenby. Trevor is one of the masterminds behind the ByoLogic BRX Virus Outbreak episode I did a couple of years ago as well as a very skilled interviewer and story-teller. ( http://heritage-key.com/greece/interview-bettany-hughes-hemlock-cup-and-bringing-ancient-history-21st-century - Interview with Bettany Hughes about 'The Hemlock Cup' and bringing ancient history into the 21st century ) With Bettany Hughes' new book "The Hemlock Cup" about to hit bookshelves, Heritage Key catches up with her to find out more about her journey in writing about Socrates. A key influential figure in the East and the Western world, Socrates lived in 5th Century Athens and Bettany has travelled across Greece to piece together the story of his life. Reading an excerpt from her book, Bettany Hughes' skill with prose and her ability to bring this historical figure to life is unquestionable.
Socrates, Confucius, and Gautama Buddha are all considered giants of philosophy. They lived in the fifth and sixth centuries BCE, long before Jesus of Nazareth, whom Christians revere as a god, and in their lives they radically changed the way humanity thought about itself. Rather than look to the heavens and supernatural entities to explain the world around us, these three figures made attempts to use reason and an understanding of the sensory world to come to conclusions about history, nature, and the human condition. Dr Bettany Hughes is an award-winning historian, author, and TV presenter, who has devoted the last 25 years to the vibrant communication of the past. She has written and presented over 40 TV and radio documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, National Geographic, and man...
In this lecture we examine the ideas of Socrates. We look at his exhortation to 'care for your soul', his conviction that knowledge of virtue is necessary to become virtuous, his belief that all evil acts are committed out of ignorance and hence involuntarily, and finally his presumption that committing an injustice is far worse than suffering an injustice. =================================================== Support us on Patreon: http://patreon.com/academyofideas Recommended Readings: Socrates A Life Examined - Luis Navia - http://amzn.to/1TKy3HZ (affiliate link) Get the transcript: http://academyofideas.com/2013/04/the-ideas-of-socrates/ ===================================================

The Apology of Socrates by Plato, Audiobook, Philosophy Audio, Greek, Greece. PLATO (ΠΛΆΤΩΝ) (c. 428 BC - c. 347 BC) and translated by Benjamin JOWETT (1817 - 1893). Plato's account of Socrates' defense at his trial for "corrupting the youth" is a classic summation of his teacher's life and mission, centered in Socrates' most famous line, "The unexamined life is not worth living." - Written by FrZeile
Año1970 director Roberto Rossellini
Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates was born in Athens in the year 469 B.C., into the family of the sculptor Sophroniscus and Phaenarete. Socrates became the new philosophy founder and the teacher of the many of great philosophers. The Apology professes to be a record of the actual speech Socrates delivered in his own defense at the trial. In the Athenian jury system, an "apology" is composed of three parts: a speech, followed by a counter-assessment, then some final words. "Apology" is a transliteration, not a translation, of the Greek apologia, meaning "defense"; in this sense it is not apologetic according to our contemporary use of the term.
