In earlier times the Balkan Mountains were known as the Haemus Mons (/ˈhiːməs ˈmɒnz/). It is believed that the name is derived from a Thracian word *saimon, 'mountain ridge', which is unattested but conjectured as the original Thracian form of Greek Emos.
Another classic etymology derives the name 'Haemos' from the myth about the fight of Zeus and the dragon Typhon:
In antiquity, the mountain range and the area around it was populated by free Thracian peoples such as the Bessi, Dii, and Satrae. Herodotus records that an oracle-shrine of Dionysus (originally a Thracian god whose cult became widespread among the ancient Greeks) was located atop one of its mountains.
John Milton's Sylvarum Liber (Naturam non pati senium, v. 29) contains a reference to "lofty Haemus",
Alexander Pope mentions Haemus in connection with Orpheus in his Ode for St. Cecilia's Day:
In classical Latin poetry Haemus was drawn into association with the Roman civil wars; although geographically incorrect, it was attractive most likely because it was a homonym with the Greek word for blood (haema) and bloody (haimon), as well as for its connection to the singer Orpheus. (See Lucan Civil War 6.576, 7.174, Ovid Metam. 10.77, Ex Ponto 4.5.5, Virgil Georgics 1.492.)

The Hemus motorway or Haemus motorway (Bulgarian: автомагистрала „Хемус"), designated A2, is a motorway currently under construction in Bulgaria. Its planned length is 433 km, of which 129 km are in operation as of 2006, divided into two sections — Sofia-Yablanitsa and Varna-Shumen. According to the plans, Hemus motorway would connect the capital city of Sofia to Varna on the Black Sea, duplicating European route E70 (Varna-Shumen), European route E772 (Shumen-Yablanitsa) and European route E83 (Yablanitsa-Sofia). The Pravets-Yablanitsa section of the Hemus motorway was officially opened on 5 December 1999. Due to the mountainous terrain through the Balkan Mountains the section, 5.47 km in length with another 16 km reconstructed, features two viaducts and one tunnel (Praveshki hanove), ...
In ancient geography, especially in Roman sources, Dacia was the land inhabited by the Dacians. The Greeks referred to them as the Getae, which were specifically a branch of the Thracians north of the Haemus Mons .Dacia was bounded in the south approximately by the Danubius river , in Greek sources the Istros, or at its greatest extent, by the Haemus Mons.Moesia , a region south of the Danube, was a core area where the Getae lived and interacted with the Ancient Greeks. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): Philg88 License: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY 3.0) License Url: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0 Author(s): Philg88 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Philg88) ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedi...
The Dacians, situated north of the lower Danube in the area of the Carpathians and Transylvania, are the earliest named people from the present territory of Romania. They are first mentioned in the writings of Ancient Greeks, in Herodotus (Histories Book IV XCIII - "[Getae] the noblest as well as the most just of all the Thracian tribes") and Thucydides (Peloponnesian Wars, Book II - "[Getae] border on the Scythians and are armed in the same manner, being all mounted archers"). Later the Dacians were mentioned in the Roman documents (Caesar's De Bello Gallico, Book VI 25,1 - "The Hercynian Forest [...] stretches along the Danube to the areas of the Daci and Anarti"), and also under the name Geta (plural Getae). Strabo in his Geography, Book VII 3,12 tells about the Daci-Getae division "...

The haciendas in the Valley of Ameca comprise a series of expansive land estates awarded to Spanish soldiers for their services in the military during the conquest of New Spain in the late 1500s.Although a great portion of these estates were built during the colonial period , some of them were inclusively built during the Porfirian period .These haciendas served as religious centers in their respective vicinities, most included capilla, or chapel, with its campanario. These land estates were dedicated to farm labor, most in the production of mezcal, a wine made from agave plant. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): No machine-readable author provided.
