SEATTLE — The University of Washington cheerleading team posted an ad for their upcoming tryouts on Facebook that many are saying objectify women.
The infographic ad posted Monday, April 25, which has since been removed, featured a blonde woman wearing a black sports bra and shorts. It outlined the do's and don'ts for the upcoming tryouts, which start April 29.
Those trying out should have a "bronze, beachy glow," "false lashes," "girl about town lipstick," "flattering eye shadow" and a "physically fit, athletic physique." They should not have, "nude lips," "harsh lines/contours/colors," "visible tattoos" or "ponytails."
"One of the first things that comes mind is objectification and idealization of Western beauty, which are values I would like to believe the University doesn't want to perpetuate," UW student Jazmine Perez, director of programming for student government, told "The Seattle Times" via email. "As a student of color who looks nothing like the student in the poster, this feels very exclusive."
The cheer team wasn't the first to share a similar infographic for tryouts. Last month, Washington State University's cheer team posted one with specifications including "'Game day'" ready" makeup, "crimson lipstick," "no visible tattoos" and a "athletic physique." That post only received one negative, mocking comment that read, "We don't want to let girls look like girls."

The University of Washington (commonly referred to as Washington or UDub) is a public research university in Seattle, Washington, United States. Founded in 1861, UW is the largest university in the Northwest and one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. The university has three campuses: the largest in the University District, Seattle and two others in Tacoma and Bothell. Its operating expenses for fiscal year 2010 was more than US$ 5.0 billion.[not in citation given] The UW occupies over 500 buildings, with over 20 million gross square footage of space, including the latest University of Washington Plaza consisting of the 325 ft UW Tower and conference center.
The University of Washington is considered a Public Ivy institution and is a member of the American Association of Universities. The university's research budget is among one of the highest in the United States and the university consistently ranks among the top 20 universities in the world. Welcome to the University of Washington! Watch in HD! Picked up a DJI Phantom nearing the end of the school year and took some footage around my campus. The University of Washington is gorgeous; looking over the footage I've noticed it's easy to begin to take it all for granted. Shots are taken from all over campus, including: The Quad, Red Square, and Drumheller Fountain. The second half of the video is primarily shot at Green Lake park which is approximately a mile away from campus. Finally the ending time lapse was taken at Gas Works park. SEATTLE — The University of Washington cheerleading team posted an ad for their upcoming tryouts on Facebook that many are saying objectify women.
The infographic ad posted Monday, April 25, which has since been removed, featured a blonde woman wearing a black sports bra and shorts. It outlined the do's and don'ts for the upcoming tryouts, which start April 29.
Those trying out should have a "bronze, beachy glow," "false lashes," "girl about town lipstick," "flattering eye shadow" and a "physically fit, athletic physique." They should not have, "nude lips," "harsh lines/contours/colors," "visible tattoos" or "ponytails."
"One of the first things that comes mind is objectification and idealization of Western beauty, which are values I would like to believe the University doesn't want to perpetuate," UW student Jazmine Perez, director of programming for student government, told "The Seattle Times" via email. "As a student of color who looks nothing like the student in the poster, this feels very exclusive."
The cheer team wasn't the first to share a similar infographic for tryouts. Last month, Washington State University's cheer team posted one with specifications including "'Game day'" ready" makeup, "crimson lipstick," "no visible tattoos" and a "athletic physique." That post only received one negative, mocking comment that read, "We don't want to let girls look like girls."

Picked up a DJI Phantom nearing the end of the school year and took some footage around my campus. The University of Washington is gorgeous; looking over the footage I've noticed it's easy to begin to take it all for granted.
Shots are taken from all over campus, including: The Quad, Red Square, and Drumheller Fountain. The second half of the video is primarily shot at Green Lake park which is approximately a mile away from campus. Finally the ending time lapse was taken at Gas Works park.
