Metra rush hour at Franklin Park, epic action and tons of horn! -3/12/15
On
March 12th,
2015 I rode Metra to
Franklin Park with a friend to railfan the
Milwaukee District West line evening rush hour and whatever freight trains came, also metraf40c joined up with us and this was one awesome evening. I would have liked to make this video into two 7-ish minute videos, a part 1 and 2, but splitting it into two seemed too difficult during the editing process. Its a lot of Metra, horn, and action, so enjoy!
All the video clips in this are in order as I recorded them at Franklin Park. I'd like to note there are a few moments in various clips where its the video gets shaky, that's because I waved to the crew at that moment and it was hard to keep the camcorder still.
The friend I was with was someone I just met that day visiting
Chicago on vacation from
Pennsylvania. He works at the shops for the Strasburg railroad, doesn't have a Youtube but hes cool, we had a great time and I hope to meet up with him again in the future. ;)
So the three of us basically camped out the small park around
Tower B12, which is preserved there, not in service anymore. Also for part of the evening we also chilled at
Ruby St. grade crossing a block
West of the park.
I won't type out descriptions for the Metra trains, I mean its quite obvious what they are, F40PHs and MP36s with P5As and K5LAs blaring like crazy, also the cab cars with K3LAs too. Some of them in the video aren't passing through like normal, that's because they only go as far as Franklin Park and wait to push back into Chicago.
Here's the description of the others trains that came through:
UP 9378
C40-8W,
BNSF 4886 Dash9-44CW (or
C44-9W, same thing), and CP 8797
ES44AC lead a tank train onto the
IHB after departing
Bensenville yard.
UP 9303 C40-8 and UP 9517
C41-8W lead a manifest from UP Proviso yard to CP Bensenville yard. They had to stop after passing us about a block away so the conductor could throw the switch to enter Bensenville yard on the right track. (
Yes for some reason those switches are not powered yet) After three idiot joggers trespassed those Dash8s wound up, the end of the train eventually stopping a feet hundred feet from us.
The same three joggers would be seen going around the back of it again near
Scott St. grade crossing, and another random person walking from the crossing, around the back end on the tracks, and back to Scott St. Seriously how hard is it to walk to a crossing that you can legally walk across?
CSX 5225
ES40DC and CSX 7321 C40-8W (Ex Conrail) lead a tank train out of Bensenville yard onto the IHB after an outbound Metra expresses through.
ILSX 921
SW1500 (Chicago
Terminal) yolos it through Franklin Park solo heading to the
Western Ave coach yards. It would take about an hour and half by the time it came back flying through in run 8 with the two
Iowa Pacific passenger cars it went to fetch. Its got a really cool P5 and headlight configuration, that was the catch of the day for sure!
After that metraf40c went home and my friend and I rode Metra back downtown, where I would see him to his
Amtrak train and I would head home. Here's the link to metraf40c's channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/metraf40c
Thanks for watching!
