For more than three years, a deadly yet largely unreported struggle has played out across Yemen as Washington struggles to defeat Al Qaeda.
“Yemen is an important theatre that Al Qaeda has given a great deal of priority to,” states US Ambassador Edmund Hull. Large sections of the country are outside the government’s effective control and there were fears it would become a new base for Bin Laden. But the government is determined to prevent that from happening. It is spending millions buying weapons on the black market in an attempt to deny terrorists the tools of their trade. It has also collaborated in targeted assassinations and arrests although calls for prisoners to be deported to Guantanamo Bay have been rejected. However not everyone supports their actions. America fears the government is creating a new weapons market, encouraging tribesmen to import more weapons into a country already awash with arms. And many Yemenis sympathise with Bin Laden. “There is no Al Qaeda. This is just a campaign against Islam,” complains Sheik Zaid Ahmed Haider. However, despite these concerns the Yemen Option appears to be working. More than a year has now passed since the last major Al Qaeda attack in Yemen and a peace of sorts has descended on the country.

"The RCMP has charged a former University of Waterloo student, alleging that he participated in a terrorist group.
Kevin Omar Mohamed, 23, is to appear in court and face the new charge, in addition to two weapon offences against him.
The RCMP believes Mohamed was going to leave Canada and participate in terrorism abroad. He was preoccupied with the Syrian conflict, but his social media posts reveal that he was entirely anti-ISIS, instead supporting an al-Qaida faction Syria...Meanwhile, a major city in Syria, Palmyra, has been freed from ISIS control by Russian air power and Syrian soldiers. The War on Terror (also known as the Global War on Terror or the War on Terrorism) is a term commonly applied to an international military campaign led by the United States and the United Kingdom with the support of other NATO as well as non-NATO countries. Originally, the campaign was waged against al-Qaeda and other militant organizations with the purpose of eliminating them.
The phrase 'War on Terror' was first used by US President George W. Bush and other high-ranking US officials to denote a global military, political, legal and ideological struggle against organizations designated as terrorist and regimes that were accused of having a connection to them or providing them with support or were perceived, or presented as posing a threat to the US and its allies in general. It was typically used with a particular focus on militant Islamists and al-Qaeda.
Although the term is not officially used by the administration of US President Barack Obama (which instead uses the term Overseas Contingency Operation), it is still commonly used by politicians, in the media and officially by some aspects of government, such as the United States' Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

For more than three years, a deadly yet largely unreported struggle has played out across Yemen as Washington struggles to defeat Al Qaeda.
“Yemen is an important theatre that Al Qaeda has given a great deal of priority to,” states US Ambassador Edmund Hull. Large sections of the country are outside the government’s effective control and there were fears it would become a new base for Bin Laden. But the government is determined to prevent that from happening. It is spending millions buying weapons on the black market in an attempt to deny terrorists the tools of their trade. It has also collaborated in targeted assassinations and arrests although calls for prisoners to be deported to Guantanamo Bay have been rejected. However not everyone supports their actions. America fears the government is creating a new weapons market, encouraging tribesmen to import more weapons into a country already awash with arms. And many Yemenis sympathise with Bin Laden. “There is no Al Qaeda. This is just a campaign against Islam,” complains Sheik Zaid Ahmed Haider. However, despite these concerns the Yemen Option appears to be working. More than a year has now passed since the last major Al Qaeda attack in Yemen and a peace of sorts has descended on the country.
