High Pamir and Afghan Wakhan Adventure
July 2011
Our trip begins in Osh, before we quickly ascend straight up onto the Pamir Plateau. Our journey through the Pamirs will involve meeting nomads, trekking forgotten paths and visiting ancient fortresses before we head down to the Wakhan Corridor, where we will cross the border for a three day cultural excursion into the north eastern tip of Afghanistan. It is safe, it is utterly fascinating, and it is a story you will not tire of telling for many years. Leaving Afghanistan behind us - we turn northwards, beginning the final leg as we journey towards the beautiful and relaxed Dushanbe.

Some footage, with music by Ensemble Tengir Too from Kyrgystan (second and third track) from a recent trip to the Wakhan Corridor in N.E Afghanistan. We travelled from Dushanbe in Tajikistan down to Ishkashim in the Wakhan, then travelled up the corridor, spending 9 days in the Hindu Kush where a new peak was climbed,and then crossed the Wakhan into the Great Pamir, where both the Wakhis and the Kirghiz were tending summer pastures. An unbelieveably beautiful area and a welcome contrast to all the negative press coming out of Afghanistan.. This area has never been ruled by the Taliban and you could not recieve a warmer welcome. Wakhan Corridor
The Wakhan Corridor (alternatively Vakhan Corridor, or Wakhan) is the narrow strip of territory in northeastern Afghanistan that extends to China and separates Tajikistan from Pakistan. The corridor, wedged between the Pamirs to the north and the Karakoram range to the south, is about 350 km (220 mi) long and 13–65 kilometres (8.1–40.4 mi) wide.
Inside the Wakhan Corridor is a high mountain valley from which the Panj and Pamir Rivers emerge and form the Amu Darya. A trade route through the valley has been used by travelers going to and from East, South and Central Asia since antiquity. Wakhan Corridor can also refer to the valley and the trade route. The closure of the Afghan-Chinese border crossing at the Wakhjir Pass at the east end of the Wakhan Corridor, however, has turned the valley into a cul de sac inhabited by nomads.
The corridor was a political creation of The Great Game. On the corridor's north side, agreements between Britain and Imperial Russia in 1873 and between Britain and Afghanistan in 1893 effectively split the historic region of Wakhan by making the Panj and Pamir Rivers the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. On its south side, the Durand Line agreement of 1893 marked the boundary between British India and Afghanistan. This left a narrow strip of land as a buffer between the two empires, which became known as the Wakhan Corridor in the 20th century.

Boroghil, also spelled Broghil, Boroghol and several other ways, (el. 3798 m./12,460 ft.) is a high mountain pass that crosses the Hindu Kush and connects the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan with Chitral in Pakistan. Broghol is a relatively low pass. It is one of the four major mountain passes entering Chitral; the others are the Dorah Pass from Badakshan in Afghanistan, Shandur Top from Gilgit, and Lowari Top from Dir in Pakistan. Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast respectively. It is separated from Tajikistan by Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
The territory that now constitutes Pakistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the Mehrgarh of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including Hindus, Indo-Greeks, Muslims, Turco-Mongols, Afghans and Sikhs. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. In late winter 2012, following in the footsteps of Eric Newby, French photographer Frédéric Lagrange journeyed to the foothills of the Hindu Kush, on assignment for Port Magazine. With minimal camera equipment, he made his way to the Wakhan Corridor -- in the north-eastern Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan -- a thin finger of land reaching eastwards to China, and dividing Tajikistan to the north and Pakistan to the south. In this isolated and somewhat independent region -- known by those who live there as the roof of the world -- Lagrange spent a month living with and photographing the Wakhi people, whose lifestyle has changed little in hundreds of years. In late winter 2012, following in the footsteps of Eric Newby, French photographer Frédéric Lagrange journeyed to the foothills of the Hindu Kush, on assignment for Port Magazine. With minimal camera equipment, he made his way to the Wakhan Corridor -- in the north-eastern Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan -- a thin finger of land reaching eastwards to China, and dividing Tajikistan to the north and Pakistan to the south.
In this isolated and somewhat independent region -- known by those who live there as the roof of the world -- Lagrange spent a month living with and photographing the Wakhi people, whose lifestyle has changed little in hundreds of years.

With the Nato withdrawal fast approaching, they are recalling the violence that took sway 25 years ago during the two-year Mujahideen presence following the Soviet retreat.
Lagrange will be joining us in a discussion chaired by the The Independent's defence correspondent, Kim Sengupta and featuring Rory Stewart MP, whose 32-day solo walk across Afghanistan in early 2002 was the basis for his first book, The Places in Between. Lagrange will present his work and they will discuss the fears and concerns he heard from the Wakhi people about the upcoming Nato withdrawal and an uncertain future.

The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the subcontinent's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of Subcontinent where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.
Pakistan is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of four provinces and four federal territories. It is an ethnically and linguistically diverse country, with a similar variation in its geography and wildlife. A regional and middle power, Pakistan has the seventh largest standing armed forces in the world and is also a nuclear power as well as a declared nuclear-weapons state, being the only nation in the Muslim world, and the second in South Asia, to have that status. It has a semi-industrialised economy with a well-integrated agriculture sector, its economy is the 26th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power and 45th largest in terms of nominal GDP and is also characterized among the emerging and growth-leading economies of the world.
The post-independence history of Pakistan has been characterised by periods of military rule, political instability and conflicts with neighbouring India. The country continues to face challenging problems, including overpopulation, terrorism, poverty, illiteracy, and corruption.

Primordial Aryan Folklore | Ethno. traditional folklore ethnic music from Pamir
This is absolutely unique ethnographic records made by Andrey Bulin (Andrew Komarov, Vishudha Kali) during his expedition to Pamir in 2004. It was the expedition to discover Pamir Higlands music tradition. Natives consider Kurbonsho as a prime singer and a poet nowadays (Hofiz, хофизи : poet & singer). He lives in hard-to-reach village in wild ferine place - Vahan (Wakhan Corridor - narrow area between Tajikistan and Afghanistan). No electricity, no roads are there. Villagers say he will no sing for outlanders but record though was made.
Vahan region is still closed for Europeans de facto untill today. This is first audio CD with Vahan music that has never been released. Kurbonsho sings on Vahan language. It is contemporary for Sanskrit language and as well as Sanskrit is on of the oldest languages.
