Afghan Turkestan
Afghan Turkestan is a region in northern Afghanistan, on the border with the former Soviet republics of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In the 19th century there was a province in Afghanistan named Turkestan Province until abolished by Abdur Rahman,[1] and was centred on Mazari Sharif and included territory in the modern provinces of Balkh, Jowzjan, Faryab and Sar-e Pol. The whole territory, from the junction of the Kokcha river with the Amu Darya on the north-east to the province of Herat on the south-west, was some 500 miles (800 km) in length, with an average width from the Russian frontier to the Hindu Kush of 114 miles (183 km). It thus comprised about 57,000 square miles (150,000 km2) or roughly two-ninths of the former Kingdom of Afghanistan.

http://www.supportthewall.com A veteran of war in Afghanistan memorized the name of every member of us military paying the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. He memorized their rank, 1st name and last name of 2,200 people. That is about 7,000 words. The first wall was written out from memory in Fort Worth on Feb 28, 2013 and the second was March 19th in San Antonio. The third tribute will be in New York City April 5th, 2013
He leaves the first spot on the wall to also acknowledge and pay tribute to veterans losing their life in Iraq and every other conflict not listed on the wall. He has not yet memorized the name of the fallen in Iraq or other conflicts but does acknowledge them with this spot on the wall
It took 10 months to memorize and nearly 11 hours to write it out each time he does it
The purpose of the tribute it to say to the families and the loved ones of those paying the ultimate sacrifice that your loved ones are ,'Not forgotten.'
This a traveling wall that was inspired by the Vietnam Wall. It is 50 feet long and 7 feet high. It breaks down into 13 panels and is transported by a trailer around the USA. The goal is to take this traveling wall to every major us city and continue this tribute for years
The wall will add new names each time another service member loses their life. At the time memorizing began their were 1853 names. By the time the 1st memorial wall was written Feb 28, 2013 in Ft Worth there was just under 2200. It is our hope that no new names are added to this tribute
The veteran who memorized this wall served in the US Navy 2002-2010 and completed a deployment to Afghanistan during 2007

Charas is the name given to a hashish form of cannabis which is hand-made in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal and India. It is made from the resin of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica). The plant grows wild throughout Northern India, Pakistan and the Himalayas (its putative origin) and is an important cash crop for the local people
Gardaa
Gardaa is a type of hashish made primarily in Afghanistan, but also in Pakistani tribal areas, using dried cannabis of high potency. It is a very pure form of Charas; free from any additive chemicals. It is a very pliable substance which can take any shape. Usually sold in the shape of balls, Gardaa starts dissolving into smaller particles even with the heat of the palm. Gardaa is an Urdu word which means "dust". It is named Gardaa due to its similarity in colour to mud or brown thick dust. Charas is mostly consumed after it is heated. After it is heated, the "brown powder" changes into a smooth "greenish mass". The term gardaa is also some times used to describe the greenish powder-form of charas. Gardaa has two types mainly, one is soft, solid, smooth structure known as pakka garda and the other one is kacha gardaa, kacha gardaa is a soft powder which is green (or lightly green brown sometimes).
Although gardaa is available throughout Pakistan, it is made in the northern tribal areas of Pakistan and in Afghanistan. It is mainly available in Peshawar, and even though the smell may linger in bazaars, it is not sold openly—though with a help of a guide one can find it. In K.P.K ., It can mostly be found in those areas which lie on the border with Khyber Agency, Orakzai Agency and Kurram Agency. One such place is Shah Kass which is part of Khyber Agency and borders with the Hayatabad neighborhood of Peshawar city. One "tola" on average costs 600 Pakistani Rupees. Its price has increased due to the tension in the Tribal Areas
Hashish is a cannabis preparation composed of compressed stalked resin glands, called trichomes, collected from the unfertilized buds of the cannabis plant. It contains the same active ingredients but in higher concentrations than unsifted buds or leaves. He memorized their rank, 1st name and last name of 2,200 people. That is about 7,000 words. The first wall was written out from memory in Fort Worth on Feb 28, 2013 and the second was March 19th in San Antonio. The third tribute will be in New York City April 5th, 2013
He leaves the first spot on the wall to also acknowledge and pay tribute to veterans losing their life in Iraq and every other conflict not listed on the wall. He has not yet memorized the name of the fallen in Iraq or other conflicts but does acknowledge them with this spot on the wall
It took 10 months to memorize and nearly 11 hours to write it out each time he does it
The purpose of the tribute it to say to the families and the loved ones of those paying the ultimate sacrifice that your loved ones are ,'Not forgotten.'
This a traveling wall that was inspired by the Vietnam Wall. It is 50 feet long and 7 feet high. It breaks down into 13 panels and is transported by a trailer around the USA. The goal is to take this traveling wall to every major us city and continue this tribute for years
The wall will add new names each time another service member loses their life. At the time memorizing began their were 1853 names. By the time the 1st memorial wall was written Feb 28, 2013 in Ft Worth there was just under 2200. It is our hope that no new names are added to this tribute
The veteran who memorized this wall served in the US Navy 2002-2010 and completed a deployment to Afghanistan during 2007

It is mainly available in Peshawar, and even though the smell may linger in bazaars, it is not sold openly—though with a help of a guide one can find it. In K.P.K ., It can mostly be found in those areas which lie on the border with Khyber Agency, Orakzai Agency and Kurram Agency. One such place is Shah Kass which is part of Khyber Agency and borders with the Hayatabad neighborhood of Peshawar city. One "tola" on average costs 600 Pakistani Rupees. The Republic of Afghanistan (Dari: جمهوری افغانستان, Jǝmhūri Afġānistān; Pashto: د افغانستان جمهوریت, Dǝ Afġānistān Jumhūriyat) was the name of the first Afghan republic, created in 1973 after Mohammed Daoud Khan deposed his cousin, King Mohammad Zahir Shah, in a non-violent coup. Daoud was known for his progressive politics and attempts to modernise the country with help from both the Soviet Union and the United States, among others.[1]
In 1978, a military coup known as the Saur Revolution took place, instigated by the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, in which Daoud and his family were killed. The "Daoud Republic" was subsequently succeeded by the Soviet-allied Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.[2]

Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday remembered the victims of the 11 September, 2001 attacks, during a sombre ceremony on the steps of the US Capitol.
Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary of the attacks in New York and Washington.
John Boehner, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, said the Republicans and Democrats were united to mark the anniversary.
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, also remembered the victims of the 9/11 attack.
"In the name of those lost on September 11, 2001, may God bless them, may God bless our men and women in uniform and may God continue to bless America," she said.
During the day on Tuesday New York City will pause for four minutes of silence to mark the attacks that killed more than 2,700 people.
Family members will lay flowers where the twin towers fell, and the names of victims will be read.
Meanwhile in Afghanistan, US Soldiers serving in the country held a memorial service to mark the sixth anniversary of the attacks.
Flags were flown at half mast, the "Last Post" was played and the soldiers observed a few minutes' silence during the service.
Major General Robert Cone, the US Transitional Commander in Afghanistan addressed the audience saying the US forces and Afghan people must work together to "seek out and destroy our common enemy".
"We are here now six years later not as conquering force, not as an invader seeking to vanquish the Afghans but rather to do what is right," he said.
Also on Tuesday, the US Ambassador to Japan, Thomas Schieffer laid flowers at the headquarters of Mizuho Financial Group in Tokyo in memory of victims of the attacks.
Mizuho had an office in the Twin Towers in New York and 23 of its employees were killed during the attacks which happened six years ago.
Japan had 24 victims in total.
Schieffer was accompanied to the memorial by the Mizuho Financial Group executive president Terunobu Maeda.

Two of the four capitals of Khorasan (Herat and Balkh) are now located in Afghanistan, while the regions of Kandahar, Zabulistan, Ghazni, Kabulistan, and Afghanistan formed the frontier between Khorasan and Hindustan.
Arab Muslims brought Islam to Herat and Zaranj in 642 CE and began spreading eastward; some of the native inhabitants they encountered accepted it while others revolted. The land was collectively recognized by the Arabs as al-Hind due to its cultural connection with Greater India. Before Islam was introduced, people of the region were multi-religious, including Zoroastrians, Buddhists, Surya and Nana worshipers, Jews, and others. The Zunbils and Kabul Shahi were first conquered in 870 CE by the Saffarid Muslims of Zaranj. Later, the Samanids extended their Islamic influence south of the Hindu Kush. It is reported that Muslims and non-Muslims still lived side by side in Kabul before the Ghaznavids rose to power in the 10th century.
Afghanistan became one of the main centers in the Muslim world during the Islamic Golden Age. By the 11th century, Mahmud of Ghazni defeated the remaining Hindu rulers and effectively Islamized the wider region, with the exception of Kafiristan. The Ghaznavid dynasty was defeated and replaced by the Ghurids, who expanded and advanced the already powerful Islamic empire. Some speculate that today's Nasher clan is a remnant of the Ghaznavid dynasty.
In 1219 AD, Genghis Khan and his Mongol army overran the region. His troops are said to have annihilated the Khorasanian cities of Herat and Balkh as well as Bamyan. The destruction caused by the Mongols forced many locals to return to an agrarian rural society. Mongol rule continued with the Ilkhanate in the northwest while the Khilji dynasty administered the Afghan tribal areas south of the Hindu Kush until the invasion of Timur, who established the Timurid dynasty in 1370. During the Ghaznavid, Ghurid, and Timurid eras, the region produced many fine Islamic architectural monuments and numerous scientific and literary works.
In the early 16th century, Babur arrived from Fergana and captured Kabul from the Arghun dynasty. From there he began dominating control of the central and eastern territories of Afghanistan. He remained in Kabulistan until 1526 when he invaded Delhi in India to replace the Lodi dynasty with the Mughal Empire. Between the 16th and 18th century, the Khanate of Bukhara, Safavids, and Mughals ruled parts of the territory.

In Afghanistan’s male-dominated society women face many restrictions. Among the many prohibitions, they are not allowed to go to parties or dance. That female social vacuum has led to an old tradition of “bachas” – dancing boys who dance in women’s clothes at men-only parties but the boy’s job description involves more than dancing. After the party, the men choose their favourite boy for sex. Premarital sex is forbidden for women so many men seek the company of rent boys. Here, sex with a boy considered less of a sin than having sex with an unmarried woman, and male child prostitution is seen as a lesser evil than women selling their bodies. Pashtoon nation has one such name of Dr. Kabir Stori (spelled as Kabeer Storai, Storay, Storae, Storey, Stooray). He was a great poet, intellectual, writer, researcher, thinker and a person whose love for his nation knew no bounds. He was a man of principals and values.
A rhyme of Dr. Kabir Stori translated by Dr. Hatef Mokhtar in English says,
If you come to Stori’s grave sometime, pray for me in Pashto, because I am a lover of Pashto
This verse of Dr. Stori clearly demonstrates his love and passion for his nation, culture and language. A true lover of Pashto, all his literature proves that he was an excellent poet and writer in the Pashtoon region who proved his metal through his outstanding poetry. Dr Kabir Storay not only discovered the depths of poetic beauty and the heights of Pashto literature but he also had a political vision and that was the national integration of Pashtoons.
Dr. Kabir Stori was born on 06-04-1942 in Kunar/Pashtoonkhwa (Afghanistan). The name of his father was Lal Mohammad Khan. A Pashtoon by cast, Dr. Stori belonged to Mirdad Khel a sub-tribe of Yousafzai tribe. He obtained his basic education from an elementary school in Khas Kunar and later on from the Rehman Baba Lycee (High School) in Kabul. During his school days he was an outstanding student who left an indelible impression upon his teachers and fellow students who predicted him to be a successful professional. He later moved to Germany and studied Psychology with Political science, sociology and philosophy from the universities of Frankfurt, Cologne and Marburg in Germany. He got his doctorate in natural sciences known as Diplom Psychologist (Dr.rer.nat).

Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

About the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1989):
Prior to the arrival of Soviet troops in Afghanistan, the pro-Soviet Taraki government took power in a 1978 coup and initiated a series of drastic modernization reforms throughout the country. Vigorously suppressing any opposition from among the traditional Muslim Afghans, the government arrested thousands of them. By April 1979 large parts of Afghanistan were in open rebellion and by December the government had lost control of territory outside of the cities. In response to Afghan government requests, the Soviet government under leader Leonid Brezhnev first sent covert troops to advise and support the Afghani government, but on December 24, 1979, began the first deployment of the Soviet 40th Army. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. On 28 December 2014, NATO formally ended combat operations in Afghanistan and transferred full security responsibility to the Afghan government, via a ceremony in Kabul.
U.S. President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda, bin Laden had already been wanted by the U.N. since 1999. The Taliban declined to extradite him unless given what they deemed convincing evidence of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks and ignored demands to shut down terrorist bases and hand over other terrorist suspects apart from bin Laden. The request was dismissed by the U.S. as a meaningless delaying tactic and it launched Operation Enduring Freedom on 7 October 2001 with the United Kingdom. The two were later joined by other forces, including the Northern Alliance. The U.S. and its allies drove the Taliban from power and built military bases near major cities across the country. Most al-Qaeda and Taliban were not captured, escaping to neighboring Pakistan or retreating to rural or remote mountainous regions.
In December 2001, the United Nations Security Council established the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to assist the Afghan interim authorities with securing Kabul. At the Bonn Conference in December 2001, Hamid Karzai was selected to head the Afghan Interim Administration, which after a 2002 loya jirga in Kabul became the Afghan Transitional Administration. In the popular elections of 2004, Karzai was elected president of the country, now named the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
In 2003, NATO assumed leadership of ISAF, with troops from 43 countries. NATO members provided the core of the force. One portion of U.S. forces in Afghanistan operated under NATO command; the rest remained under direct U.S. command. Taliban leader Mullah Omar reorganized the movement, and in 2003, launched an insurgency against the government and ISAF.
Though vastly outgunned and outnumbered, the Taliban insurgents, most notably the Haqqani Network and Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin, have waged asymmetric warfare with guerilla raids and ambushes in the countryside, suicide attacks against urban targets and turncoat killings against coalition forces. The Taliban exploited weaknesses in the Afghan government, among the most corrupt in the world, to reassert influence across rural areas of southern and eastern Afghanistan. ISAF responded in 2006 by increasing troops for counterinsurgency operations to "clear and hold" villages and "nation building" projects to "win hearts and minds".
While ISAF continued to battle the Taliban insurgency, fighting crossed into neighboring North-West Pakistan. In 2004, the Pakistani Army began to clash with local tribes hosting al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. The US military launched drone attacks in Pakistan to kill insurgent leaders. This resulted in the start of an insurgency in Waziristan in 2007.
On 2 May 2011, United States Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad, Pakistan. In May 2012, NATO leaders endorsed an exit strategy for withdrawing their forces. UN-backed peace talks have since taken place between the Afghan government and the Taliban. In May 2014, the United States announced that its combat operations would end in 2014, leaving just a small residual force in the country until the end of 2016.
As of 2015, tens of thousands of people have been killed in the war. Over 4,000 ISAF soldiers and civilian contractors as well as over 15,000 Afghan national security forces members have been killed. In October 2014, British forces handed over the last bases in Helmand to the Afghan military, officially ending their combat operations in the war.

Sd Tarinder Singh a writer and researcher on Bhai Nand Lal/ ਭਾਈ ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ/ भाई नंद लाल, (1633-1713 born in Ghazni, Afghanistan) who was a poet famous in the Sikh tradition and favourite disciple of Guru Gobind Singh, gives us detailed information on Bhai Sahib's life and work in this programme.
His poetry, all in Persian except for Joti Bikas, which is in Punjabi, forms part of the approved Sikh canon and can be recited along with scriptural verse at Sikh religious divans. Nand Lal adopted the pen-name of "Goya," though at places he has also subscribed himself as "Lal," the word being the last part of his name. He was a scholar, learned in the traditional disciplines of the time.
