Afghanistan's new Prime Minister has taken office with the support of most of the country's different factions.
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar arrived in the capital, Kabul, to be sworn in on the same day rebel forces launched their heaviest rocket and artillery attack in months.
The attack has been blamed on Taliban fighters.
The Taliban have been invited by Hekmatyar to join the new coalition government with President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
But so far they've given no indication they'll accept this invitation.
Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's convoy arriving in Kabul Wednesday.
The new Prime Minister was sworn into office with the support of most of the country's warring factions.
Hekmatyar's Hizb-e-Islami troops escorted the new prime minister to the ceremony.
Hekmatyar was received by his former enemy now turned ally, President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
The alliance ended four years of feuding that has destroyed much of the Afghan capital and killed more than 25-thousand people.
The conflict began almost immediately after the communist regime was toppled in 1992, when the fighters turned their weapons on each other.
For many the new government marks a new era in Afghanistan.
But not everyone is optimistic.
Taliban forces besieging the city marked Hekmatyar's swearing in ceremony with their heaviest rocket and artillery attack in months.
At least 40 people were killed and another 130 were injured.
The assault was a response to the Hekmatyar-Rabbani alliance.
Taliban leaders want the Kabul government overthrown and want President Rabbani and Hekmatyar to be tried as war criminals.
Wednesday's attack has many people fearing a fresh round of fighting.
Hekmatyar, who is meeting Thursday with factional leaders, has invited the Taliban to join the new coalition with Rabbani.
So far, rockets and shells have been their only reply.

A source within the Taliban government said that Hekmatyar had been killed by three gunmen in the province of Takhar.
He'd been one of the leaders in the anti-Taliban alliance that has maintained itself in the north of the country.
Unnamed sources have said that the former Afghani Prime Minister Hekmatyar was shot in the country's northern province of Takhar.
Hekmatyar had fled to neighboring Iran after the Taliban ousted his government from the capital of Kabul in 1996.
But he returned to help lead a fractious coalition of anti-Taliban factions in the northern regions of the country.
An ally said Hekmatyar was recently in Badakshan province in the far northeastern province of Afghanistan, bordering Takhar province.
There are no further details or confirmation of Hekmatyar's death.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar (Pashto: ګلبدین حکمتیار; Persian: گلبدین حکمتیار; born 26 June 1947) is the former Prime Minister of Afghanistan and founder and active leader of the Hezb-e Islami political party, and a designated "global terrorist" by the United States. After escaping from prison in Afghanistan in 1973, he moved to Pakistan. When the Soviet war in Afghanistan began in 1979, the CIA began funding his rapidly growing Hezb-e Islami mujahideen organization through the ISI.
Following the stepping down of Afghan President Najibullah in 1992, Hekmatyar and other warlords began a civil war in Afghanistan, which led to the deaths of around 50,000 civilians in Kabul alone. In the meantime, Hekmatyar was promoted to becoming Prime Minister of Afghanistan from 1993 to 1994 and again briefly in 1996. This was followed by the Taliban takeover of Kabul and Hekmatyar's escape to Iran's capital Tehran for safety.
One of the most controversial of the mujahideen commanders, he has been accused of spending "more time fighting other Mujahideen than killing Soviets."

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar arrived in the capital, Kabul, to be sworn in on the same day rebel forces launched their heaviest rocket and artillery attack in months.
The attack has been blamed on Taliban fighters.
The Taliban have been invited by Hekmatyar to join the new coalition government with President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
But so far they've given no indication they'll accept this invitation.

A source within the Taliban government said that Hekmatyar had been killed by three gunmen in the province of Takhar.
