The War in Afghanistan (or the American war in Afghanistan)[29][30] is the period in which the United States invaded Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks.[31] Supported initially by close allies, they were later joined by NATO beginning in 2003. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power.[32] Key allies, including the United Kingdom, supported the U.S. from the start to the end of the phase. This phase of the War is the longest war in United States history.[33][34][35][36][37] In 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda; bin Laden had already been wanted by the United Nations since 1999. The Taliban declined to extradite him unless given what they deemed convincing evidence of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks[38] and declined demands to extradite other terrorism suspects apart from bin Laden. The request was dismissed by the U.S. as a delaying tactic, and on 7 October 2001 it launched Operation Enduring Freedom with the United Kingdom. The two were later joined by other forces, including the Northern Alliance.[39][40] In December 2001, the United Nations Security Council established the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to assist the Afghan interim authorities with securing Kabul. At the Bonn Conference in December 2001, Hamid Karzai was selected to head the Afghan Interim Administration, which after a 2002 loya jirga in Kabul became the Afghan Transitional Administration. In the popular elections of 2004, Karzai was elected president of the country, now named the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.[41] -

"It is symbol of our friendship and would usher in hope, light up homes, nourish the fertile fields of Heart and bring prosperity to the people of the region," Modi said in a social media post as he departed for Afghanistan, the first stop on a five-country trip.
India has poured more than $1 billion into Afghanistan reconstruction projects and humanitarian aid, making it one of the largest donors to the war-torn country.
A new national assembly building in Kabul and major power line and road construction have been among the main projects funded by India.

An Afghan government ban on the mining of semi-precious lapis lazuli stones has put those involved in the trade mostly out of business.
But activists say that illegal extraction of the stones is continuing and funnelling millions of dollars into the hands of insurgents and corrupt warlords and funding the conflict in the country.
In Kabul, polishers clean up the rough-hewed stones which were brought to the capital before the ban last year. It's a craft that dates back thousands of years.
"I have invested all of my money on lapis but since the government announced the lapis extraction an illegal process all of my business collapsed. When something is announced illegal no one will dare to buy it, so what should I do with all this lapis? It's not something I can eat, I can't take it anywhere, the only solution is that foreigners come and buy it. When foreigners buy lapis our business will start again and obviously its benefits will go to the government as well," said lapis dealer Mohammad Akbar.
The mountains of Afghanistan hold as much as $1 trillion to $3 trillion in mineral resources, according to estimates by the U.S. and Afghan governments, including lapis.
"The mines themselves are in the hands of illegal armed groups and the benefits from this mining disproportionally going to them, and those groups include groups that are completely without any cover, groups that are government, groups, government armed groups in theory but actually are also extracting money from the mines, and the Taliban," said Stephen Carter, a researcher for Global Witness, a non-profit watchdog that investigates the links between natural resources, corruption and conflict.
Since 2014, at least 12,500 tonnes of lapis worth about $200 million have been extracted, much of it illegally or in a way that avoided nearly $30 million in government taxes, according to a report released on Monday by Global Witness.
Among the officials Global Witness accuses of profiting from the illegal trade is former defence minister Bismillah Mohammadi, as well as several members of parliament with ties to northern Afghanistan.
A close aide to Mohammadi rejected the claims as "baseless" and an effort to defame the former minister.
Gul Mohammed Bedar, a deputy governor of Badakhshan, also denied allegations that government officials had their fingers in the illicit trade, but confirmed that the lapis mines are controlled by "illegal armed groups" as well as the Taliban, making it difficult for the government to manage.
"The situation at the moment is you have, you know, a real illustration that there is competition among armed groups for this resource and what that does is it creates the ideal conditions for an insurgency to flourish. Everyone's got an interest there being a little bit of conflict, everyone's got an interest in the government being essentially a hollow shell," Carter added.
The mining sector across the country is plagued by corruption and conflict, with as many as 10,000 deposits estimated to be outside government control, according to a report released on Sunday by the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit.
Much of the illegal lapis is being smuggled out through neighbouring Panjshir province, according to officials, home to some of Afghanistan's most powerful players.

Since the invasion in 2001 the presence of coalition forces there has been heavily criticized and the question the rest on everybody's mind is "Was it all worth it?"
